Chapter 38 Don't Be So Frank
The rest of the meal was downed in silence. Miranda prepared a lunch box filled with chocolate snacks for Romeo.
"Thank you so much for having me over, Mr and Mrs Smith." Romeo thanked them. "I hope I didn't ruin the mood by telling you Cara and I are just friends?" The look on his face had a hint of guilt.
"Oh of course not!" Miranda expressed joyously. "You simply told us the truth. Sure I was hurt because you are such a fine young man who is also very intelligent and caring, your kind rarely exists. But as it is, it is obvious there is no romantic feeling between the two of you so I hope you continue to be good friends with each other."
Romeo smiled, a smile of relief. "Thank you so much for understanding. Then I look forward to your invites?"
"You are welcome in my home any time, sonny." Kenneth added with a serene smile. He touched Romeo's shoulder gently and tapped it. "Thank you for all of your help and for staying by Cara's side as a good friend. You stuck by her while we were not there and I am grateful. Our company would have fallen if it weren't for you."
Romeo shook his head softly with a gentle smile on his face. "No, Mr Smith, you shouldn't be thanking me, you should be thanking your daughter and yourself. If you hadn't trained her to be such a beautiful and strong woman with an amazing charisma, I wouldn't have stuck by her.
"And if she hadn't accepted those trainings, she wouldn't have been able to charm me. So I'm just doing what I can because I want to support such a talented and promising young woman in achieving her goals and I won't stop until she is satisfied. I will give her the moon and the sun if only she asks."
The way he stared at her was like a man staring at a woman he was planning to love forever and she knew it. So why was he so stern telling her parents they were just friends? What was wrong with him! Confusing her the way he did, she didn't like it.
Kenneth had a warm and fatherly smile on his face. "Your parents must feel so proud to have you as their son. Would you like to switch places with Joshua?"
They all shared a laugh, all except Cara. She stared at Romeo with a frown. "Enough of you guys acting like you are in love with each other!" She snapped. "It's getting late, we have to go Romeo."
Miranda and Kenneth were confused by her actions but Romeo read it as her being jealous because he was getting along so well with her parents.
"No need to get jealous." He said to her, Turning back to face Mr and Mrs Smith, he smiled. "You heard the boss, I have to leave but I will come and see you again soon."
Miranda nodded her head. "Send some pictures from your fun trip, okay? I look forward to seeing them, honey." She said to Cara.
Cara only nodded her head with a plain smile on her face.
They waved each other goodbye and Cara left with Romeo.
Several thoughts infiltrated her mind as they drove back home, anger causing her blood to rise rapidly.
But why was she angry in the first place? Why was she so furious? Had he done anything wrong? Had he told a lie? No! So why was she getting married.
She kept talking to herself in her head. 'He could call you his girlfriend at the shopping mall when no one asked him but now that he was asked, he didn't even hesitate before answering!
'Why couldn't he just wait for me to reply? They are my parents after all! I could have said something to answer them!' Yet when she was supposed to answer, she had frozen up and became tongue tied.
The question had made her so flustered that she didn't know how to respond to it. Thankful enough that Romeo had cleared the air, she still felt angry that he had spoken so smoothly and emotionlessly if she were to judge him.
Did he hate her that much?
"I had a great time today." Romeo stated, severing her connection with her thoughts. He continued. "Your parents are fun to be around, I don't have to act princely around them even though I tried to impress them. If it weren't for that pea that almost killed me and ruined everything, I would have rated myself a complete ten. What did you think?"
His question went unanswered. He turned to look at her. "Cara?"
"Why did you have to be so frank?" She threw the question out before she even realized it. The words had subconsciously formed and left her mouth.
"What?" His brows creased as he asked.
She hadn't meant to ask him because the answer, she was sure, wasn't what she sought. She preferred to be veiled by the curiosity of whether he liked her or not. But the question was out already so she might as well get an answer. Not that it mattered to her. Or did it?
She turned to look at him, almost teary eyed. "Why were you so frank with your response? When they asked me if we were dating, why did you answer in my stead?"
"Oh... I thought the question took you by surprise so I had to step in and make things clear. Did I not do it right?" His brow arched as he asked.
"You did... It's not that, it's just..." She sighed. The questions were at the tip of her tongue, ready to be spilled. 'Were you trying to pass a message across to me? Do you not have any romantic feelings towards me? Why do you keep confusing me with your actions and your words? I can't read you like a fcking book!'
Yet her mouth clamped shut, not letting even one of those questions see the light of day…
