Chapter 59
Chapter 59
Iris Bennett's POV
"Do you even know what you're saying, Iris?" Adrian's expression darkened further.
Everyone had seen what he'd done for Zoe. In the eyes of the pack, they were the true fated mates.
I was just occupying a position that didn't belong to me.
How could he not understand that?
"Of course. After all, she saved your life. She must be the most important person to you." I nodded firmly, forcing myself to appear as gentle as possible, like a proper Luna should.
"I understand."
Though I had no similar experience, I understood that someone who'd saved his life would naturally be different to him.
So I could understand why he was willing to do these things for Zoe.
If only I hadn't been hurt in the process.
But I couldn't dwell on this anymore. Amelia had warned me to stay calm. Emotional turmoil could affect my baby.
I would leave eventually, but if my child was harmed because of this, I'd regret it for the rest of my life.
Why had it taken me so long to understand what I should have realized from the start? If I'd figured this out earlier, my life would never have reached this point.
"So you're saying you knew all along that I would pin false accusations on you?" Adrian's voice suddenly rose. His fists clenched, and I half-expected him to strike me.
"It doesn't matter, Adrian." I answered softly.
I just needed to wait until Adrian's mother recovered, then leave this pack for good.
"If it doesn't matter, then forget it." Adrian's tone went flat.
We stared at each other, sinking into an endless silence.
"Don't worry. While I'm still at Bloodridge Pack, I'll fulfill my duties as Luna properly." I finally broke the silence.
For his mother's sake, if nothing else, I would see this through to the end.
The thought brought me a small measure of relief.
This was just a job to me now. I didn't need to worry about so much.
"Fine. Of course. But let me remind you—you're still my Luna. You can't be caught in any scandals with anyone."
Was he talking about Lucas? But we'd done nothing wrong. Meanwhile, everyone in the pack knew about his relationship with Zoe.
"Of course I can manage that. But I'm more curious about what you plan to do." I smiled at him.
"If you're going to let everyone believe Zoe is Bloodridge Pack's Luna, there won't be a good outcome. If word reaches your mother, she'll be devastated. Neither of us wants that."
I stated this without emotion, simply laying out the facts.
But Adrian looked like he'd reached his breaking point. He glared at me furiously, then stormed out without another word. The door slammed behind him with a thunderous crash.
"Luna? Are you alright? The Alpha, he just—" Ryan rushed over, alarmed by the noise.
"It's nothing." I shook my head.
With Adrian's terrible temper, would my child inherit it too? No, that couldn't happen.
"Did you need something?"
"Yes, Luna. Mrs. Stuart's healer called. He wants to know about her condition. They'd like her to come in for an examination as soon as possible."
The moment I heard those words, I froze.
My agreement with Adrian was finally ending.
After his mother recovered, I would have to leave this pack. Adrian's support for Silvermoon Pack wouldn't stop immediately, of course.
But given our current situation, I couldn't keep accepting his help.
"Luna, are you alright?" Ryan looked at me with concern. "You've gone very pale."
I shook my head.
"No, it's nothing."
I'd been waiting for this moment for so long.
Yet now that it had arrived, my feelings were unexpectedly complicated.
I'd lived here for two years, after all. Deciding to leave so suddenly still felt painful.
"We should discuss this with the Alpha. Someone needs to tell Mrs. Stuart." I sighed softly.
"You don't need to worry anymore. Once you make it through until Adrian's mother recovers, all of this will be over," my wolf said gently.
"I know. I'll do my best... Oh, he's back already." I looked at the doorway in surprise.
Adrian stood there, breathing hard, phone in hand.
It seemed he'd rushed back the moment he received the healer's message.
"You heard, didn't you?" I smiled at him. "So who's going to tell her? If you're too busy, I can handle it myself."
He stared at me, then his lips curved into a mocking smile.
"Are you in that much of a hurry?"
Wasn't he the one in a hurry? I resisted the urge to roll my eyes and simply sighed.
"We could tell her together. But it's up to you."
I didn't want any more contact with him than necessary.
Though there was one question that nagged at me.
Given what happened to Zoe, when would he come after me for revenge? After all, that scar would be with her forever.
But I said nothing.
Fighting with him over this would be pointless. Everything should wait until after Adrian's mother recovered.
Last time we'd tried to separate, his mother had fallen ill. We wouldn't be that impulsive again.
Waiting until she fully recovered before separating would work just as well.
I assumed Adrian felt the same way. He wouldn't want his mother hurt either.
"Fine, Iris." Adrian let out a cold laugh.
I didn't understand why he seemed so upset. If he wanted me to pay for what happened to Zoe, he could just say so. Why was he keeping silent?
"Remember what you said. Tomorrow night, we'll go see my mother together and tell her about the examination. I trust you know what not to say?"
