Chapter 84 The Last Betrayal

Chapter 84 The Last Betrayal
Nothing moved for several long seconds.

The underground garage remained frozen beneath harsh fluorescent lights while Elena stood trembling between both brothers.

Julian’s gun hung loosely at his side now.

Adrian remained several feet behind her, breathing hard, every muscle in his body visibly restrained.

Nobody trusted the calm.

Not after everything.

Elena wiped harshly at the tears burning down her face.

“I’m done being trapped between the two of you.”

Her voice sounded raw.

Exhausted.

Julian stared at her silently.

Something hollow had opened inside his expression now.

Not anger.

Not obsession.

Loss.

Adrian took another careful step closer.

“Elena,” he said quietly, “come here.”

Julian’s jaw tightened immediately.

“There it is again.”

Adrian’s eyes darkened.

“She is terrified.”

“She’s exhausted.”

“She’s standing between a loaded weapon and the man holding it.”

Julian looked down at the gun briefly.

Almost like he had forgotten it was there.

Then slowly, painfully slowly, he crouched and placed it carefully onto the concrete floor.

The metallic sound echoed sharply through the garage.

Elena released a breath she had not realized she was holding.

Adrian still did not relax.

Neither did she.

Julian straightened again.

For the first time since all of this began, he looked truly broken.

Not polished.

Not controlled.

Just a man standing in the ruins of his own choices.

“I didn’t know how to let you go,” he admitted quietly.

Elena’s throat tightened.

“You should have tried.”

A weak smile crossed his bruised mouth.

“Yes.”

Silence settled again.

Cold.

Heavy.

Somewhere above them, traffic hummed faintly through the city streets.

Life continuing.

Completely indifferent.

Adrian stepped forward another inch.

“Elena.”

This time she moved.

Slowly.

Carefully.

She stepped backward toward Adrian while keeping her eyes locked on Julian.

Julian watched the movement like it physically hurt him.

But he did not stop her.

Did not reach for the weapon.

Did not move at all.

And somehow that made everything feel sadder.

Elena finally reached Adrian’s side.

The warmth of him behind her should have felt comforting.

Instead it only reminded her how tired she was.

Too much damage sat between all of them now.

Julian laughed softly under his breath.

“You know what the worst part is?”

Nobody answered.

His eyes remained fixed on Elena.

“I really thought I was different from him.”

Adrian’s expression hardened instantly.

“You aren’t different.”

Julian nodded faintly.

“No.”

The honesty unsettled the garage more than denial would have.

Elena wrapped her arms around herself tightly.

“Then let this end.”

Something flickered behind Julian’s eyes.

Fear.

Not of prison.

Not of Adrian.

Of losing the last connection he still believed existed between them.

“They’ll bury me after this,” he said quietly.

Adrian’s voice turned cold.

“You buried yourself.”

Julian ignored him.

“Elena, once the investigation expands, they’ll destroy everything tied to me.”

“You should have thought about that before manipulating evidence.”

“I was trying to protect you.”

“No.” Her voice sharpened painfully. “You were trying to possess me.”

That landed hard.

Julian visibly flinched.

Because deep down, some part of him knew she was right.

The silence stretched.

Then unexpectedly, Julian smiled.

A tired, fractured smile.

“You always saw through people eventually.”

Adrian stepped slightly in front of Elena instinctively.

Julian noticed.

Of course he did.

The bitterness returned immediately.

“He still does it without thinking.”

Adrian’s patience finally snapped.

“Enough.”

Julian’s gaze lifted toward him.

“Why?”

The question sounded almost genuine.

“Because despite everything, she still moves toward you every time you call her name?”

Adrian’s expression darkened dangerously.

“This isn’t about winning her.”

Julian laughed quietly.

“That’s exactly what you still don’t understand.”

Something changed in the atmosphere again.

Subtle.

Wrong.

Elena felt it instantly.

Julian’s eyes had sharpened.

Not calmer.

Focused.

Like some decision had quietly settled inside him.

Her pulse stumbled.

“Julian.”

He looked at her immediately.

And smiled sadly.

“I can’t go back with nothing.”

Cold spread through her chest.

Adrian heard it too.

His voice dropped instantly.

“What does that mean?”

Julian did not answer.

Instead, he moved.

Fast.

Before either of them fully realized what was happening, he lunged sideways toward Elena.

She gasped sharply as his arm wrapped hard around her waist.

“Julian!”

Adrian surged forward instantly.

Julian grabbed the gun from the floor with his free hand and pressed it tightly against Elena’s side.

Everything stopped.

The garage turned silent except for Elena’s uneven breathing.

Adrian froze several feet away.

His face drained of color.

“Let her go.”

Julian held Elena tightly against him.

Not violently.

Desperately.

His breathing had become uneven again.

“They won’t negotiate unless I have leverage.”

Elena felt physically sick.

“You’re using me now?”

Pain flashed across his bruised face.

“I’m trying to survive.”

“You already destroyed yourself.”

“Maybe.” His grip tightened slightly. “But I’m not walking into prison while he keeps everything.”

Adrian’s voice turned deadly calm.

“You point that gun at her again and I swear to God, Julian...”

“What?”

The question cracked sharply through the garage.

“You’ll kill me?”

Adrian said nothing.

But the answer sat visibly in his eyes.

Elena felt it.

So did Julian.

For one terrible second, grief crossed his expression.

“See?” Julian whispered to her. “He’s always been capable of it.”

“And you aren’t?” Elena shot back.

That silenced him.

Adrian took another careful step forward.

“Listen to me carefully.”

The authority in his voice filled the garage instantly.

“You let her go right now.”

Julian’s hand trembled faintly around the weapon.

“And then what?”

“You walk away from her.”

A broken laugh escaped Julian.

“You still think this is about choice.”

Elena could feel his heart pounding wildly through his chest now.

Not controlled anymore.

Not rational.

He was unraveling.

“Julian,” she whispered carefully, “this isn’t going to fix anything.”

“I know.”

The honesty frightened her.

Because it meant he understood exactly how far gone this had become.

Adrian’s gaze never left the gun.

“Let her go.”

Julian ignored him completely.

“Elena, if we leave right now, we can still disappear before federal agents lock everything down.”

Shock ripped through her.

“What?”

His voice sharpened desperately.

“You know what they’ll do to both of us once this becomes public? The media will tear you apart too. They’ll turn you into part of the scandal.”

“There is no us.”

Pain twisted violently across his face.

“You don’t mean that.”

“Yes, I do.”

Julian looked shattered.

Not angry.

Shattered.

And somehow that made him even more dangerous.

Adrian saw it too.

“Elena,” he said quietly, “keep talking to me.”

She understood immediately.

He was trying to keep Julian focused.

Trying to buy time.

Her pulse pounded violently.

“Julian,” she whispered, “look at me.”

He did.

Instantly.

“You said you loved me.”

His grip softened slightly.

“Yes.”

“Then stop doing this.”

Emotion flickered wildly through his face.

“You think I don’t know how terrible this looks?”

“You’re holding me at gunpoint.”

“I’m trying to keep you safe.”

“No.” Tears burned down her face again. “You keep calling control love, and it isn’t the same thing.”

Those words hit him visibly.

His breathing grew uneven.

Adrian moved another inch closer.

Julian noticed instantly.

“STOP.”

The gun jerked upward sharply.

Elena flinched.

Adrian froze again.

The silence afterward felt unbearable.

Then suddenly alarms began blaring somewhere above the garage.

Julian startled violently.

Federal agents.

Someone must have tracked him.

Panic flashed openly across his face for the first time.

“Elena, we have to go now.”

“No.”

His grip tightened.

“You don’t understand.”

“I understand perfectly.” Her voice broke. “You keep taking from me because you’re afraid to lose.”

The words landed like a physical blow.

Julian stared at her.

And for one split second, his attention fractured completely.

That was all Adrian needed.

Everything happened at once afterward.

Adrian moved.

Fast.

A gunshot exploded through the garage.

Elena screamed.

Julian staggered backward violently.

The gun slipped from his hand and clattered across the concrete floor.

For a second nobody seemed to understand what had happened.

Then Elena saw the blood.

Dark.

Spreading rapidly across Julian’s shirt.

Her breath stopped.

Adrian stood several feet away holding a small black handgun Elena had not even realized he carried.

His face looked empty.

Utterly empty.

Julian swayed unsteadily before collapsing hard against the side of a nearby car.

“Elena,” Adrian said sharply, moving toward her immediately.

But she could barely hear him.

Her eyes stayed locked on Julian.

Oh God.

Oh God.

Blood streaked down the silver car door as Julian slid slowly onto the concrete.

The fluorescent lights above made everything look unreal.

Like some terrible scene from someone else’s life.

Adrian reached her seconds later.

“Are you hurt?”

She shook her head numbly.

Then looked at him.

“You shot him.”

His jaw tightened hard.

“He was holding a gun on you.”

Julian let out a weak laugh from the floor.

Both of them turned instantly.

Blood stained his teeth now.

“You finally did it,” he rasped toward Adrian.

Pain flashed sharply across Adrian’s face.

But he said nothing.

Sirens echoed faintly somewhere above them now.

Closer.

Federal agents flooding the building.

Julian coughed harshly.

More blood spilled across his mouth.

Elena moved instinctively before Adrian could stop her.

She dropped beside Julian carefully.

His eyes found hers immediately.

Still soft for her somehow.

Even now.

“Don’t,” Adrian warned quietly.

But she ignored him.

Julian looked exhausted beyond words.

The fight had finally left him completely.

“I didn’t want this ending,” he whispered.

Tears blurred Elena’s vision.

“You created it.”

A faint smile touched his mouth.

“Yes.”

The honesty hurt more than excuses would have.

Julian’s gaze drifted weakly toward Adrian.

“You know the worst part?” he murmured.

Adrian remained motionless.

“She still looks at you like home.”

Pain crossed Adrian’s face so quickly Elena almost missed it.

Julian saw it.

And strangely, some bitterness finally disappeared from his expression.

Like dying had exhausted even hatred.

Federal agents stormed into the garage moments later.

Weapons drawn.

Commands echoed sharply across the concrete.

But the violence had already ended.

Agent Mercer reached the scene first.

Her eyes widened instantly at the blood.

“Jesus Christ.”

Medical teams rushed forward immediately.

But one look at Julian told Elena the truth already.

This was not survivable.

Julian’s eyes found hers one final time while paramedics pressed desperately against the wound.

“I did love you,” he whispered weakly.

Elena’s chest cracked open painfully.

Not because she loved him back.

Because once upon a time, maybe he could have been someone better.

Maybe all of them could have.

Then his gaze shifted toward Adrian again.

No anger left.

Only exhaustion.

“Take care of her this time.”

The sentence hollowed the entire garage.

Adrian looked like he could not breathe.

Seconds later, Julian’s eyes closed.

The monitors beside the paramedics erupted into sharp continuous sound.

Flatline.

Everything after that blurred.

Voices.

Agents.

Medical teams.

Questions.

But Elena barely heard any of it.

She only stood there trembling beside Adrian while blood stained the concrete beneath fluorescent lights.

The war between the Cross brothers had finally ended.

Not with victory.

Not with justice.

Only ruin.

And somewhere deep inside herself, Elena realized the most devastating truth of all.

By the time love turns into control, obsession, and survival, nobody walks away from it untouched.
