Chapter 82 Brothers at War

Chapter 82 Brothers at War
The penthouse still smelled faintly of broken glass and rain.

Federal agents had cleared out nearly an hour earlier, but the silence they left behind felt heavier than the chaos itself.

Elena stood near the windows with her arms wrapped tightly around herself.

Behind her, Adrian remained near the dining table, one hand braced against the marble surface while untouched whiskey sat nearby.

Neither of them looked at each other much.

Not because of anger anymore.

Because exhaustion had settled too deeply into both of them.

Julian’s confession still echoed through the penthouse like something alive.

The memory made Elena feel physically sick all over again.

She closed her eyes briefly.

“You should sit down.”

Adrian’s voice sounded rough.

She shook her head faintly.

“If I sit down, I think I’ll fall apart.”

Silence followed.

Then quietly,

“Elena.”

She turned toward him slowly.

For the first time since she returned from the federal building, Adrian looked genuinely shaken beneath the control.

Not corporate crisis shaken.

Not public scandal shaken.

Personal.

Years of restraint cracking open underneath betrayal.

“He admitted everything,” she whispered.

Adrian looked away immediately.

“Yes.”

“He could’ve killed me.”

The words landed hard in the room.

Because neither of them had fully said that part aloud yet.

Julian called it an accident.

Manipulation.

Fear.

But the reality remained horrifyingly simple.

She could have died.

Adrian’s jaw tightened sharply.

“He did not care enough about the risk.”

Something in his voice unsettled her.

Not rage exactly.

Hatred sharpened carefully into something colder.

Elena stepped closer slowly.

“Adrian.”

His eyes lifted toward hers.

For a second she saw something dangerous there.

Not directed at her.

At himself.

At Julian.

At everything.

“You were right about him,” she said quietly.

A humorless smile crossed his face briefly.

“That doesn’t feel very satisfying right now.”

No.

Of course it didn’t.

Because being right had nearly cost her life.

A sharp knock interrupted the silence.

Both of them turned immediately.

Adrian’s expression hardened at once.

Another knock followed.

Harder this time.

Not federal agents.

Too impatient.

Adrian moved toward the entrance instinctively while Elena’s pulse climbed sharply.

The security monitor near the hallway flickered on automatically.

Julian.

Her stomach dropped.

Two federal agents stood beside him while another investigator remained near the elevator.

Julian’s hands were cuffed.

But he looked calm.

Too calm.

Adrian went completely still.

“What is he doing here?”

The intercom buzzed.

One of the agents spoke through the speaker.

“Mr. Cross, we need temporary access to the penthouse study regarding archived financial records connected to the investigation.”

Adrian’s eyes never left the screen.

“And him?”

“Mr. Julian Cross requested presence during the retrieval process to identify encrypted company storage locations.”

Julian looked directly into the camera then.

Like he knew Elena was watching.

Something cold slid through her chest instantly.

Adrian opened the door before security could argue further.

The atmosphere shifted immediately once Julian entered.

Tension.

Memory.

Years of resentment walking into the room alongside him.

The agents moved toward the study down the hall with the investigator, leaving Julian briefly near the living room entrance while Adrian stood several feet away.

Elena noticed it immediately.

The way both brothers held themselves carefully still.

Like violence already existed between them before either spoke.

Julian’s bruised mouth curved faintly.

“You look terrible.”

Adrian laughed once under his breath.

A cold sound.

“You look arrested.”

The smile vanished.

Good.

Elena stayed near the windows silently while the air between them thickened dangerously.

Julian glanced toward her briefly.

“You okay?”

Adrian moved before she could answer.

Fast.

Protective instinct again.

He stepped directly between them.

“Don’t speak to her.”

Julian’s eyes darkened immediately.

“There it is again.”

“What?”

“That.” Julian gestured sharply toward him. “You deciding who gets access to her.”

Adrian’s restraint visibly tightened.

“You manipulated her after causing her accident.”

“I SAVED HER.”

The sudden explosion echoed violently through the penthouse.

Elena flinched.

Even the agents down the hallway went silent briefly.

Julian realized it too late.

His breathing had become uneven now, composure cracking again beneath the surface.

Adrian stared at him with open disgust.

“You really believe that.”

“Yes.”

The answer came instantly.

Fierce.

Broken.

“You isolated her,” Julian continued sharply. “You controlled her entire life so completely she didn’t even know what was real anymore.”

“And you solved that by nearly killing her?”

Julian’s jaw flexed hard.

“That was never the plan.”

“People die from failed brakes every day.”

“She survived.”

The room froze.

Because Julian said it too quickly.

Too confidently.

Adrian’s expression changed instantly.

Dangerous realization settling into place.

“You knew she would survive?”

Julian went silent.

Elena felt her heartbeat stumble painfully.

Adrian stepped forward slowly now.

“What did you do?”

Julian looked away briefly.

That alone terrified her.

“Julian,” Elena whispered.

He finally looked at her again.

And for the first time since she met him, she saw real instability beneath the calm.

Not sadness.

Not heartbreak.

Obsession cracking open under pressure.

“I followed you that night,” he admitted quietly.

The room tilted.

“What?”

“You left the penthouse upset.” His eyes stayed locked on hers. “I was behind you two blocks back.”

Adrian went rigid beside her.

Julian continued anyway.

“When the brakes failed, I called emergency response before impact.”

Elena stared at him numbly.

“You watched it happen.”

Pain crossed his face.

“I tried to minimize it.”

“Oh my God.”

The horror inside her own voice made her stomach twist violently.

Julian stepped toward her instinctively.

“Elena.”

“Don’t touch me.”

He stopped immediately.

Something fractured visibly across his expression.

But Adrian looked murderous now.

“You staged her accident,” he said quietly.

Julian snapped back instantly.

“I gave her a chance to escape you.”

“You almost buried her in the process.”

Silence crashed down again.

Then Julian laughed weakly.

“You know what’s funny?” His eyes fixed on Adrian. “You’re acting horrified now like your hands are clean.”

Adrian’s expression darkened.

“My mistakes are not comparable to this.”

“No?” Julian stepped closer. “You lied to her for months. Controlled medical decisions. Buried information. Manipulated everyone around you through money and fear.”

“I never touched her car.”

The sentence cut through the room like a blade.

Julian flinched.

Barely.

But enough.

Adrian saw it too.

Years of resentment suddenly ignited fully behind his eyes.

“You spent your entire life envying me,” Adrian said coldly.

Julian laughed sharply.

“Envying you?”

“Yes.”

The brothers stood facing each other now like something inevitable had finally arrived.

“You wanted my company,” Adrian continued. “My authority. My marriage.”

“I wanted you exposed.”

“No,” Adrian said quietly. “You wanted what belonged to me.”

Julian moved first this time.

Fast enough that Elena barely processed it.

His fist slammed into Adrian’s jaw with brutal force.

Adrian staggered backward into the edge of the dining table, whiskey glass shattering violently across the floor.

“Mrs. Cross!” one of the agents shouted from down the hallway.

But it was already too late.

Years of buried hatred exploded all at once.

Adrian lunged forward instantly.

The force of his tackle drove Julian hard against the marble wall nearby.

A framed painting crashed to the floor.

Glass shattered again.

The sound echoed through the penthouse like gunfire.

“Stop!” Elena screamed.

Neither listened.

Julian swung first wildly, catching Adrian across the cheekbone.

Adrian answered with a brutal punch to his ribs hard enough to force the air from Julian’s lungs.

The agents rushed from the hallway immediately.

“Break it up!”

But the brothers barely seemed human now.

Not executives.

Not polished billionaires.

Just years of resentment stripped raw and violent.

“You touched her!” Adrian roared.

“You destroyed her before I ever did!”

Adrian slammed him backward again.

Julian crashed into the bar counter, bottles toppling violently onto marble floors.

Blood streaked across his mouth again.

But he smiled anyway.

A broken, furious smile.

“She was terrified of you,” Julian spat.

Adrian grabbed him by the collar instantly.

“And she trusted you instead.”

That landed harder than the punches.

Julian’s expression shifted sharply.

Because underneath everything, that was the wound neither of them could survive cleanly.

Elena moved forward desperately.

“Stop it!”

One agent finally caught Adrian’s shoulder while another grabbed Julian’s arm, trying to separate them physically.

For one terrible second Elena thought Adrian might actually kill him.

The rage inside him looked that deep.

Not explosive anymore.

Focused.

Deadly.

Julian saw it too.

And instead of fear, something almost satisfied crossed his bruised face.

“Go ahead,” he said quietly. “Become exactly what everyone already thinks you are.”

That did it.

Adrian broke free from the agents instantly.

His fist connected hard enough to send Julian collapsing sideways into the glass coffee table.

The entire thing shattered beneath him.

Elena gasped sharply.

Blood spread instantly along Julian’s temple where broken glass sliced across skin.

The agents finally forced Adrian backward physically.

“Mr. Cross!”

Adrian fought against them for another second before stopping abruptly.

Chest heaving.

Eyes black with fury.

The room looked destroyed now.

Broken glass everywhere.

Overturned furniture.

Blood streaked across marble floors.

Julian laughed weakly from the wreckage.

Actually laughed.

“You see?” he rasped through blood. “This is who he is.”

Adrian looked ready to tear the entire penthouse apart.

But Elena suddenly stepped between them.

Not because Julian deserved protection.

Because she could feel something irreversible approaching.

“Enough.”

Her voice cracked sharply through the chaos.

Everyone froze.

Even Adrian.

Elena looked down at Julian lying among shattered glass.

Then toward Adrian standing restrained by federal agents several feet away.

And suddenly she saw it clearly.

Not heroes.

Not villains.

Two broken men who spent years destroying each other while dragging her through the wreckage between them.

Different forms of damage.

Same hunger underneath.

Possession disguised as love.

The realization exhausted her beyond words.

Julian wiped blood slowly from his mouth again while staring up at her.

“You still chose him.”

The statement sounded less angry now.

Just empty.

Elena shook her head faintly.

“No.” Her voice trembled painfully. “I chose myself.”

Silence followed.

Heavy.

Final.

Something changed in Julian’s expression then.

Not acceptance.

But understanding.

Like he finally realized she no longer belonged emotionally to either of them.

The agents pulled him carefully to his feet moments later.

He looked terrible now.

Bruised.

Bleeding.

Exhausted.

Adrian was not much better.

Blood darkened the corner of his mouth while anger still radiated visibly beneath his skin.

The brothers looked at each other one last time across the destroyed penthouse.

Years of loyalty and betrayal sitting openly between them now.

Then Julian spoke quietly.

“You know what the worst part is?”

Nobody answered.

His eyes stayed fixed on Adrian.

“She loved you even after everything.”

Pain flickered sharply across Adrian’s face.

Real pain.

Julian saw it and smiled sadly.

“That’s why I hated you.”

The agents guided him toward the elevator after that.

This time he did not resist.

The doors opened quietly.

Then just before stepping inside, Julian looked back at Elena once more.

Not possessive anymore.

Just tired.

“I really did try to save you,” he whispered.

The elevator doors closed before she could answer.

Silence crashed into the penthouse afterward.

One agent remained briefly to ensure Adrian stayed calm before finally leaving too.

Then only Elena and Adrian remained.

Broken glass glittered around them beneath pale gray daylight.

The city outside kept moving like none of this mattered.

Adrian leaned heavily against the marble counter now, breathing slower finally.

The fury had faded.

Leaving only exhaustion behind.

Elena looked at him carefully.

“You could’ve killed him.”

Adrian stared at the floor for a long moment.

“Yes.”

The honesty unsettled her.

But not as much as the grief underneath it.

“He’s still your brother.”

A bitter smile crossed Adrian’s bruised face.

“Not anymore.”

She believed him.

Because some fractures passed the point of repair completely.

And somewhere beneath the wreckage of the empire, beneath the lies and obsession and violence, the Cross brothers had finally destroyed whatever remained between them forever.
