Chapter 48: Mr. Harvey’s unease

Chapter 48: Mr. Harvey’s unease

Far across the ocean, in a bustling city filled with towering buildings, Mr. Harvey sat in his hotel room. Sunlight streamed through the window, but he didn't notice it. His eyes were glued to his phone, a news report glowing on the screen. The headlines were about Vance Sterling, as usual. But buried within the article, a small detail caught his eye: "Viola, recently discharged from the hospital, was seen entering the Sterling estate."

Mr. Harvey's heart, which had been steady moments before, began to beat faster, a restless thumping against his ribs. He felt a deep, unsettling knot form in his stomach.

He pushed his glasses up his nose, re-reading the line, as if closer inspection would change the words. It didn't. An uneasy feeling, cold and sharp, washed over him. He knew Vance Sterling. Not personally, but from years of careful research, from digging into the dark corners of the business world. Vance Sterling was a man made of ice and ambition. Every move he made, every person he interacted with, was for an advantage, a benefit. There was no such thing as a simple favor or a kind gesture from him. Not without a price.

"What does he want with her?" Mr. Harvey muttered to himself, pacing the room. His mind raced, replaying every piece of information he had on the powerful CEO. Vance Sterling was a shark in a tailored suit, always circling, always looking for weakness, for an opportunity to strike. Was there anything good that could come from him? The question hung heavy in the air, a dark cloud in his thoughts.

Viola, in his estimation, was incredibly vulnerable right now. She had just gone through so much. Her father's near-death, her own collapse, the stress of the company's problems. She was tired, probably still weak, and her mind was likely preoccupied with a thousand worries. This meant she was defenseless, open to influence, open to someone like Vance Sterling taking advantage. The thought sent a jolt of fear through him.
"No," he whispered, his voice firming. "I have to do something about this!"
He stopped pacing and pulled out his own phone, a secure, old-fashioned model he used only for emergencies. He quickly dialed a number, his fingers flying over the keypad. The phone rang three times before a gruff voice answered on the other end.

"Yes?" the voice asked, sharp and to the point.
"It's Harvey," he said, skipping any pleasantries. "I need a private jet. Now"
"Sir, are you sure? The last-minute arrangements will be costly, and your schedule is packed for the next few days with the..."
"I don't care about the cost or my schedule!" Mr. Harvey cut him off, his voice rising in urgency. "This is more important. It's about Viola. She's in trouble."
There was a moment of silence on the other end, then a sigh. "Trouble? What kind of trouble?"

"Vance Sterling," Mr. Harvey growled, the name a bitter taste on his tongue. "He has her at his house. And I don't trust him. Not one bit. I need to get there. As fast as possible. Arrange everything. Be discreet."
"Understood, sir. I'll make the arrangements immediately. You'll have a departure time within the hour." The line clicked dead.
Mr. Harvey didn't relax. Instead, he walked over to his laptop, opening it with swift movements. He began typing, pulling up every file he had on Vance Sterling, every news report, every rumor, every whisper from the financial world. He needed to understand what Vance's game was.

He thought about Viola, her bright emerald eyes, her fierce loyalty, her gentle heart. She was a good person, too trusting sometimes, especially when faced with someone as charming and powerful as Vance could be if he wanted to be. He knew Vance could put on a convincing show. He had seen reports of him dazzling investors, calming agitated rivals, even charming world leaders. If he was putting that kind of effort into Viola, it meant he wanted something big.

As he scrolled through the data, a chilling thought struck him. Viola was not just her father's daughter. She was also the inheritor of a massive, untapped fortune – a fortune that was carefully hidden, known only to a very select few, including Mr. Harvey himself. Could Vance Sterling know about this? Was that his true motive? It seemed too far-fetched, too secretive. But if anyone could uncover such a secret, it would be Vance.

He remembered the early days of Viola's company, how she had struggled, how she had fought to keep her father's dream alive without touching that hidden wealth. It was her choice, a way to honor her father's wish for her to build her own success. But now, with the company in trouble and Viola vulnerable...
Mr. Harvey continued his frantic research. He looked into all of Vance Sterling's recent business dealings, searching for any connection, any hint of a new venture that might involve Viola's company, or even her personal assets. He found nothing direct, but he did notice a pattern: Vance had recently been acquiring a lot of smaller, struggling tech companies, absorbing them into his vast empire. Was Viola's company just another target? A cheap acquisition? No, that didn't fit with the "guiding hand" approach.

Unless... unless he saw something in Viola herself. Her intelligence, her resilience, her unique skills. Mr. Harvey had witnessed her surgical precision, her quick thinking under pressure. She was extraordinary, yes, but what would Vance Sterling want with that?

A new, even more disturbing thought began to form in Mr. Harvey's mind. What if it wasn't about business at all? What if Vance Sterling's interest was... personal? The idea sent a jolt of cold dread through him. Viola was beautiful, intelligent, and fiercely independent. But Vance Sterling was not a man known for fleeting affections or innocent interests. His relationships, if he had any, were always strategic, always designed to benefit him in some way.
Mr. Harvey closed his laptop with a snap, his face grim. He didn't have time for guesswork. He needed to act. He grabbed his small travel bag, already packed for his flight. He had to reach Viola before it was too late. He had to understand what Vance Sterling truly wanted.
He walked out of the hotel room, his mind already formulating a plan. He would confront Vance Sterling. He would get Viola out of that house. He wouldn't let that man take advantage of her, not while she was so vulnerable.

As he hurried down the corridor towards the elevator, Mr. Harvey felt a cold certainty settle in his chest. He knew, with an undeniable clarity, that stepping into Vance Sterling's world was like stepping into a lion's den. And he wasn't sure if he, or Viola, would make it out unscathed.
