Ninety Nine
Ninety Nine
The night hung over the city like a black shroud. The streets were empty, silent, but the air was thick, almost alive with tension. Every building, every alley seemed to lean in, watching, waiting. Somewhere in the shadows, the Siphon stirred. It always sensed them first, always tested the limits, probing for weakness. But tonight, it would find none.
At the highest rooftop in the center of the city, Ezra crouched, a shadow among shadows. His muscles were coiled, his dark eyes sharp, glowing faintly as they scanned the streets below. Beside him, Lira’s hands moved with fluid precision, glowing pale and sharp in the moonlight as she traced intricate runes into the air. Each stroke summoned lines of energy, wards, and traps that shimmered like fragile glass, yet were stronger than steel.
Around them, Valen and their closest strike team formed a silent perimeter. The vampires, witches, and wolves stood ready, weapons in hand, eyes alert, waiting for the first sign of the creature. Not one dared breathe too loudly. Even the wind seemed to hold itself back.
Then it came.
A gust of wind twisted through the alleyways, carrying with it a low, hollow hiss. The Siphon emerged from the shadows, limbs stretching and twisting unnaturally, smoke curling off its body like black mist. Its eyes…or what passed for eyes glimmered with hunger, and its screech echoed through the empty streets, a sound that scraped at the bones. The hunt had begun.
Ezra struck first. In a blur, he leapt from the rooftop, landing on the street below with inhuman speed. His fists collided with the Siphon’s writhing form, cutting through the shadows. The creature hissed and recoiled, but it was relentless, striking back with tendrils of black smoke that lashed out like whips.
Lira’s voice rose in a chant, low and fierce in the old tongue. Runes flared along the walls, barriers of light and magic erupting wherever the creature moved. Arcs of pure energy shot from her hands, slicing through the Siphon’s shifting body, forcing it to retreat, thrash, and twist in confusion. Every spell she cast, every line of power she drew, was precise, ruthless. The wards pulsed in harmony with Ezra’s strikes, a deadly rhythm of shadow and flame.
Valen darted through the chaos, blade flashing in the dim light, striking where he could, cutting at the Siphon’s limbs to slow it. The strike team coordinated with him, moving in practiced silence, blocking escape routes, protecting civilians and each other. The city became a battlefield, streets burning with magic, steel, and raw power.
Ezra dodged another lash of black smoke, his movements fluid, almost inhuman. He pivoted, punching the Siphon’s torso, sending it staggering back into a wall reinforced with Lira’s wards. She moved like a shadow, weaving through debris and broken stone, her hands never still. Each pulse of her magic burned the creature, her eyes glowing brighter with determination.
“This ends now!” Ezra growled, low and dangerous. He lunged, grabbing the Siphon’s smoky form and twisting it into a vortex of shadow and energy. Lira’s magic flared, bright and sharp, encasing the creature in spirals of ash and light, sealing its movements. Every barrier she had placed, every trap set in the streets, reinforced the cage around it.
The Siphon shrieked, a sound like tearing metal and dying screams, thrashing violently against their combined hold. Ezra’s hands pierced the smoky core, striking at its heart, while Lira poured every ounce of energy into the wards that bound it. Sparks flew, shadows ripped, and for a heartbeat, the city itself seemed to shake with the force of their combined power.
Then, with a final, ear-splitting scream, the Siphon exploded in a blinding flash of black and silver. Smoke and ash spiraled upward, scattering into nothingness. Silence fell immediately, as if the city itself were exhaling after holding its breath for centuries.
Ezra and Lira stood side by side, heaving, bodies slick with sweat, blood, and lingering magic. Around them, the strike team cautiously approached, faces wide with awe and relief. Valen let out a low whistle, admiration and respect mingling in his tone, though he kept his distance, ever cautious of the power radiating from Lira.
Lira’s knees buckled slightly, and Ezra caught her in a firm hold, pulling her close. “It’s over,” he whispered, voice rough from exertion and command. “The Siphon… it’s gone.”
She leaned against him, letting herself breathe for the first time in what felt like hours. “We did it,” she murmured, her voice soft, tinged with exhaustion but edged with triumph. “We actually did it.”
Ezra brushed a damp strand of hair from her face, his fingers lingering against her cheek. “Together,” he said simply. “Every strike, every trap… every moment. You and me.”
For a long, quiet moment, they remained like that, the wind tangling around them, the city below alive but no longer under threat. The strike team approached, offering congratulations, words spilling over in awe and relief, but Ezra and Lira remained still, lost in their shared certainty. They had faced darkness that no one else could touch and survived.
Valen finally stepped forward, his eyes on Lira, sharp but respectful. “You were… incredible,” he admitted, voice low. “All of it. Every spell, every ward. You controlled the battlefield as if it were… yours.”
Lira’s lips curved faintly, tired but victorious. “It’s not mine,” she said, her voice soft, distant. “It belongs to the city. To the people I promised to protect.” Her gaze flicked to Ezra, lingering for a heartbeat longer than necessary, a silent acknowledgment of shared victory and trust.
Ezra’s hand slid down to clasp hers. “And you’ll protect it,” he said, voice steady. “We will. Together.”
The night air shifted, carrying the faint scent of ash and magic, a reminder of the battles fought and the power unleashed. For once, the city could rest. For once, they had triumphed over a darkness that had threatened to consume everything.
Even so, Lira did not relax completely. She felt the lingering pulse of power inside her, the edge of obsession that had carried her through every battle. She had changed…grown sharper, colder, more dangerous. The victory was not just over the Siphon. It was a testament to what she had become: a queen of shadow, magic, and iron will.
Ezra sensed it too. He didn’t need her words to know how far she had pushed herself, how much she had sacrificed. He pressed a hand to her back, steadying her. “Rest,” he said quietly. “We’ve earned it. For tonight, at least, the city is safe.”
She closed her eyes briefly, leaning into him, allowing herself to feel the exhaustion, the relief, and the quiet pride of what they had achieved. For once, the weight of obsession, responsibility, and war lifted, if only for a moment.
Together, they stood, the city sprawling below them, silent and alive. The Siphon had been defeated. Their enemies scattered. Their people safe. And for the first time in what felt like centuries, the world seemed to pause, granting them a fragile, fleeting peace.
Yet even in this calm, Lira knew… the battles were never truly over. But tonight, the darkness had been beaten back. And tonight, for the first time, she allowed herself to simply be human, if only for a heartbeat, in the arms of the man who had fought beside her through fire, blood, and shadow.
And together, they had survived.
