One hundred and eight
One hundred and eight
The prison cell was cold, silent except for the faint hum of the wards keeping Morwen bound. Lira stood before her, the faint glow of her magic brushing against the reinforced walls, and Ezra watched from the shadowed corner of the chamber. Valen remained just outside the circle of light, arms crossed, his expression unreadable but tense.
Morwen’s laugh echoed softly, brittle and full of malice. “Well, well, the Ashblood queen finally graces me with her presence,” she said, tilting her head, eyes glinting. “And the dark prince at her side… I must admit, I didn’t think you’d show restraint for long.”
Lira’s eyes narrowed. “I didn’t come here to exchange pleasantries. You’ve been stirring things in the shadows. The Siphon attack…your handiwork is clear. Tell me everything.”
Morwen leaned against the cold stone wall, crossing her arms, still smirking. “Ah, so perceptive. I see you’ve grown stronger, Ashblood. But do you really think you can pin the world’s chaos on me alone?”
Ezra stepped forward, his presence dark and commanding. “Enough games, Morwen. The Siphon, the whispers, the shadows manipulating my people….was any of it your doing? Speak clearly, or you will regret it.”
The witch’s eyes flicked toward him, a faint smirk tugging at her lips. “You still bite at shadows, my prince. Clever, but predictable. I did not orchestrate the Siphon’s attack, though I must admit, I watched… I guided…”
Lira’s fingers twitched, magic sparking faintly around her hands. “Guided? You mean you manipulated the Siphon to test us, to weaken us while you… what?…played your games?”
Morwen laughed again, low and dangerous. “Testing? Perhaps. Observing? Certainly. Weakening the council’s grip? Undoubtedly. But nothing was done without a purpose. You’ve grown, Lira, but even you cannot see the full picture yet.”
Ezra’s dark eyes narrowed. “Enough riddles. Who is behind this? If you had a hand in it, tell me. Name them.”
The witch tilted her head, considering, then shrugged. “Do you really think I’ll hand you the names on a silver platter? I exist in shadows, Prince. Knowledge is power, and power is mine to wield.”
Valen stepped forward, voice hard. “You’ve crossed a line. Enough with riddles. If you won’t talk, we’ll make you. Magic, force, whatever it takes.”
Morwen’s gaze flicked to Valen, amused. “Ah, the loyal shadow. Still protective, still blind. Your fire is admirable, but useless against what’s coming. If you think brute force will bend me, you are sorely mistaken.”
Lira’s eyes blazed, her hands glowing with faint red magic. “You’ve already done enough. I won’t let you manipulate more lives. If you refuse to cooperate, I will….”
“Kill me?” Morwen interrupted, laughing. “Perhaps. But do you think the cost won’t reach far beyond these walls? Do you think you understand what it takes to wield that power without consequence?”
Ezra moved closer to Lira, resting a hand lightly on her arm, a silent warning. “Patience,” he said, low, almost a growl. “We don’t need her to burn this room down. We need her to talk.”
Morwen tilted her head again, her expression softening, almost mockingly. “Ah… he protects you, doesn’t he? That dark prince. So loyal. So easily manipulated by the one who bears the blood he craves.”
Lira’s jaw tightened. “Do not test me.”
Morwen’s smile widened. “I’m not testing. I’m observing. Everything unfolds as it should. But know this, Ashblood… your precious prince, he walks a line between shadow and light. And there are those who would see him slip into the dark again. You may not know them yet, but they exist. I can see it, and I’ve seen it since before your rise.”
Ezra’s fingers tightened on the hilt of his dagger, shadow energy pulsing faintly around him. “If you know something, now is the time to speak. Or I’ll make you regret every word you’ve ever spoken in arrogance.”
Morwen tilted her head, laughter flickering like fire. “Do you truly think fear will bend me? I have been caged before, Prince. I have seen centuries pass while men and monsters alike have tried to break me. Do you think this cell, your magic, or your wrath will do it now?”
Lira’s magic flared, and the wards around Morwen glowed red, humming with power. “You will speak,” she said, voice low, commanding. “Or I will tear you apart with my own hands.”
For the first time, a flicker of hesitation crossed Morwen’s face. Not fear… never fear… but calculation. “Very well, Ashblood,” she said finally. “I will speak, but know this: the truths you seek may not be what you want to hear. The council, your enemies… even your allies… they hide more than you realize. And the man you love, the prince… he may not be entirely who you think he is.”
Ezra’s eyes darkened further. “Explain.”
Morwen leaned back, expression twisting into a sly, knowing smile. “The Siphon attack… it was not just a test of strength. It was a warning. The forces that linger in the shadows… they are patient. And someone has begun planting seeds in the council. Someone who has manipulated Kieran’s return, who whispered into ears both loyal and treacherous. If you want to survive, Ashblood… you must learn who your true enemies are before the war even begins.”
Lira’s pulse quickened, hands still glowing faintly. “And who is it? Tell me. Now.”
Morwen’s gaze flicked between Lira and Ezra. “I could tell you… but would you survive it? Some knowledge brings clarity, yes….but also pain. Perhaps it is time you saw for yourselves. Only by walking into the shadows will you know the full scope of danger.”
Valen gritted his teeth. “Stop dancing around. We don’t have time for riddles.”
Morwen’s laugh echoed again, low and sharp. “Oh, Valen. Patience is a weapon just as sharp as yours. You wield it poorly. But very well… the first moves have already been made, and the pieces are shifting. The council… the Siphon’s remnants… even your precious allies… no one is untouched. I can watch the chaos unfold, or I can guide you. The choice… is yours, Ashblood. Prince.”
Ezra’s eyes flicked to Lira. Her jaw was tight, hands glowing with restrained magic. She was angry, more than just about Morwen’s manipulations. She understood now the scope of the danger, and that every victory they had earned was temporary unless they acted decisively.
“Guide us,” Lira said finally, voice steady. “But know this… any trickery, any deceit, and I will not hesitate to destroy you where you stand.”
Morwen’s smile softened, but it carried none of the warmth of friendship. “Wise. Very wise. Then listen closely. The Siphon may be gone, but shadows linger. They wait for the cracks you leave. And some of those cracks… are closer to you than you think.”
Ezra moved a step forward, shadow energy curling faintly around him. “We will find these cracks. And we will close them. Make no mistake, Morwen. Your guidance comes with consequences, and I will hold you accountable for every one of them.”
The witch tilted her head, almost amused. “Consequences are always my favorite part, Prince. And Ashblood… do remember, every time you act in the light, shadows will follow. Even now, the pieces are moving. And by the time you realize, it may be too late.”
Lira’s magic flared once, just enough to push Morwen back against the wall. “I do not fear shadows,” she said firmly. “And I will not let anyone… anyone…use you or your dark tricks against us.”
Ezra remained silent, observing, calculating, but there was a quiet pride in the way he regarded her. She had grown into her power, and even in the face of Morwen’s manipulations, she had not faltered.
Morwen’s laugh echoed as she leaned back in her restraints. “Oh, Ashblood… the night is far from over, and neither is the game. But you… you may yet prove interesting.”
Lira left the cell, shoulders squared, head held high, Ezra following close behind, silent but deadly. Valen lingered a moment longer, shaking his head in disbelief at the encounter.
Outside, the city lay quiet, but the tension in the air hinted at a storm on the horizon. Morwen’s words echoed in Lira’s mind, twisting with her own fears: allies may betray, shadows linger, and even those closest could be instruments in a darker plan.
And yet, she did not falter. Not now. Not ever.
Because if the shadows moved, she would be ready.
Because if the world was coming for them, she would stand…Ashblood, rebel queen, and queen of all she had claimed…with Ezra by her side, darkness and fire entwined, ready to face whatever waited in the night.
