Chapter 8 A Hidden Past Begins To Stir

Chapter 8 A Hidden Past Begins To Stir

The Kane mansion woke up before its occupants did.

Not because it wanted to.

But because it had no choice.

Silence in a place like this was never rest—it was preparation.

Aria Monroe stood by the window of her room, watching the first light of morning crawl across the city skyline. She hadn’t slept well again. Not because the bed was uncomfortable, but because her mind refused to settle.

Every night since entering this house, something had been pressing against her thoughts.

Questions without answers.

Voices without faces.

Warnings without names.

And Adrian Kane.

A knock came at her door.

“Enter,” she said softly.

Lucas Brand stepped in, holding a thin black folder again.

“You’re becoming predictable,” Aria said before he spoke.

Lucas gave a faint pause. “Good morning to you too.”

Aria turned. “Let me guess—more rules?”

Lucas almost smiled, but didn’t. “Not rules. Updates.”

She walked over and took the folder.

Inside were financial schedules, appearance requirements, and one additional line marked in bold:

“PRIVATE DINNER WITH THE KANE FAMILY – MANDATORY.”

Aria looked up. “Family meeting?”

Lucas nodded. “Richard Kane requested it.”

Aria repeated slowly, “Richard Kane…”

Adrian’s father.

Lucas confirmed, “Yes.”

A faint tension tightened in the air.

“Interesting,” Aria murmured.

Lucas studied her briefly. “He does not usually request personal presence unless it is important.”

Aria closed the folder. “Or dangerous.”

Lucas didn’t deny it.

Downstairs, Adrian Kane was already in the study.

Richard Kane’s voice echoed from the speaker on the desk.

“You brought her into the family without consulting me.”

Adrian remained calm. “It was necessary.”

Richard’s tone hardened. “Necessary for what exactly?”

A pause.

Adrian’s gaze remained fixed on the screen. “Stability.”

A cold laugh came through the speaker.

“Stability?” Richard repeated. “Or distraction?”

Adrian didn’t respond.

The line went quiet for a moment.

Then Richard spoke again, lower this time.

“I want her here tonight.”

Adrian’s eyes narrowed slightly. “She will come.”

“Good,” Richard replied. “Let’s see what kind of woman you’ve brought into my house.”

The call ended.

Silence returned.

Lucas, standing nearby, spoke carefully. “This doesn’t feel routine.”

Adrian’s expression remained unreadable. “It isn’t.”

\---

Aria spent the afternoon preparing, though she didn’t know exactly what she was preparing for.

She changed outfits twice.

Not because she cared about appearance.

But because she didn’t trust the intention behind the invitation.

When evening arrived, a black car was already waiting.

Adrian stood by the entrance again.

As always.

Controlled. Silent. Unshaken.

“You ready?” he asked.

Aria looked at him. “Should I be?”

A faint pause.

Then Adrian replied, “With my family… never.”

That was the most honest thing he had said so far.

\---

The Kane family estate was different from the mansion.

Older.

Colder.

More intimidating.

The building felt like it had history carved into its walls—history that didn’t welcome outsiders.

Aria stepped out of the car, noticing immediately how still everything was.

Too still.

Adrian walked beside her.

No handholding this time.

No performance.

Just presence.

Inside, the air felt heavier.

Richard Kane stood at the far end of the hall.

Tall. Strict. Powerful in a way that didn’t need introduction.

Margaret Kane stood beside him.

Perfect posture. Sharp gaze. Controlled smile.

Not welcoming.

Assessing.

Richard’s eyes landed on Aria immediately.

“So this is her,” he said.

Aria stepped forward slightly. “Good evening.”

No hesitation.

No fear.

Margaret’s gaze narrowed slightly. “She’s confident.”

Richard didn’t smile. “Confidence is not what I asked for.”

Adrian stepped forward slightly. “She is my wife.”

A pause.

Richard looked at Adrian. “Contract wife.”

The word landed heavily.

Aria didn’t react.

But she felt it.

Adrian’s jaw tightened slightly.

Margaret finally spoke. “Sit.”

They moved to the dining table.

Long.

Formal.

Unforgiving.

\---

Dinner began in silence.

Then Richard spoke.

“You know why I allowed this arrangement?”

Aria looked up slightly. “I assume it benefits your family.”

Richard studied her. “Everything benefits the Kane family.”

Aria replied calmly, “Then I suppose I am included.”

A faint shift in atmosphere.

Margaret observed her carefully. “You speak boldly.”

Aria replied, “I was raised to speak clearly.”

Richard leaned back slightly. “Tell me, Aria Monroe… what do you want from my son?”

The question cut directly.

Adrian looked at Aria.

Waiting.

Watching.

Aria didn’t hesitate.

“I don’t want anything from him,” she said.

A pause.

Richard’s eyes narrowed. “Everyone wants something.”

Aria met his gaze. “Not everyone is here for the same reason.”

That made silence deepen.

Margaret exchanged a brief look with Richard.

Adrian remained still.

But something in his expression shifted.

Subtle.

Almost unnoticeable.

\---

After dinner, Aria stepped outside the estate for air.

Adrian followed.

“You handled them well,” he said.

Aria looked ahead. “Your family feels like a courtroom.”

Adrian didn’t deny it.

A silence passed.

Then Aria asked, “Why did your father really want to meet me?”

Adrian hesitated slightly.

Then he answered carefully.

“To observe.”

Aria frowned. “Observe what?”

Adrian looked at her directly now.

“You,” he said.

A pause.

Then he added quietly, “And what you might be connected to.”

Aria’s expression changed slightly.

“Connected to what?”

Adrian didn’t answer immediately.

Instead, he said, “That is what I am trying to find out.”

A cold silence followed.

Not tension.

Not anger.

Something deeper.

Understanding that both of them were now inside something neither of them fully controlled.

\---

Back in the mansion later that night, Aria sat alone again.

But this time, her thoughts were different.

This wasn’t just a contract.

It was a system.

A network.

A past that was slowly surfacing through cracks she hadn’t noticed before.

And Adrian Kane…

was not just her husband in name.

He was also searching.

For something tied to her.

Or her past.

Or something worse.

Aria clenched her fingers slightly.

“Then let’s see who finds the truth first,” she whispered.

Outside, thunder rolled faintly again.

And somewhere deep inside the Kane world…

the past was no longer buried.

It was waking up.
