Chapter 6 The First Public Appearance
The morning arrived with unusual tension inside the Kane mansion.
Today was not an ordinary day.
Today, Aria Monroe would step into the world as Mrs. Adrian Kane.
And in a world like theirs, appearances meant everything.
Aria stood in front of the mirror, adjusting the simple yet elegant dress chosen for her. It was not flashy, not attention-seeking, but undeniably expensive. The kind of outfit that whispered wealth without shouting it.
Behind her, a stylist carefully adjusted her hair.
“You have a naturally strong presence,” the stylist said softly. “Don’t hide it.”
Aria gave a faint smile. “I’m not trying to.”
A knock came at the door.
Lucas Brand entered again, holding a small box.
“Mr. Kane’s instructions,” he said.
Aria turned slightly. “More rules?”
Lucas opened the box. Inside was a diamond bracelet—simple, elegant, powerful.
“He said you should wear it,” Lucas added.
Aria stared at it for a moment before taking it.
“Symbolic?” she asked.
Lucas hesitated. “Public image.”
Aria nodded slowly. “Of course.”
She placed the bracelet on her wrist.
Cold metal against skin.
A reminder that nothing about this marriage was personal.
\---
Downstairs, the atmosphere was already different.
Several luxury cars waited outside the mansion. Security stood in position. Staff moved with precision. Everything prepared for visibility.
Adrian Kane stood by the entrance, speaking briefly with his assistant.
When Aria appeared at the top of the stairs, the entire space seemed to shift.
Not because she demanded attention.
But because she didn’t try to.
Adrian looked up.
For a moment, he said nothing.
Aria walked down calmly, step by step, maintaining composure despite the eyes now subtly watching her.
When she reached the bottom, Adrian spoke.
“You’re ready.”
It wasn’t a question.
Aria replied, “I suppose I have to be.”
A brief pause.
Then he extended his hand.
It was not affection.
It was presentation.
Aria looked at it for a second before placing her hand in his.
Their fingers barely touched—but the moment felt heavier than it should have.
“Let’s go,” Adrian said.
\---
The event was held in a high-end business venue downtown.
The moment they arrived, cameras began flashing.
Reporters. Business partners. Influencers. All gathered like they were witnessing something important.
And they were.
Adrian Kane rarely appeared publicly with anyone.
Let alone a woman.
Whispers spread instantly.
“Is that his wife?”
“She looks new…”
“Is this a strategic marriage?”
Aria kept her expression neutral as they walked inside.
Adrian remained composed, leading her through the crowd like it was second nature.
But Aria noticed something.
Every step he took was controlled.
Every interaction calculated.
Even his silence was strategic.
They stopped at the center of the hall.
A host approached, smiling. “Mr. Kane, it’s an honor. And this must be Mrs. Kane.”
All eyes turned to her.
Aria nodded politely. “Pleasure to meet you.”
Her voice was steady.
Not nervous.
Not forced.
Adrian glanced at her briefly.
Something flickered in his eyes again.
Approval.
Or curiosity.
Maybe both.
\---
Inside the hall, Victoria Hale watched from a distance.
Her expression was tight.
Unhappy.
Jealous.
She approached slowly, heels clicking against the floor.
“Well,” Victoria said with a polite smile that didn’t match her tone. “So this is the famous wife.”
Aria turned slightly.
Adrian didn’t interrupt.
He was watching.
Always watching.
Victoria extended her hand. “Victoria Hale. Long-time associate of Adrian.”
Aria shook it calmly. “Aria Kane.”
A pause.
Victoria’s smile sharpened slightly. “Interesting choice.”
Aria replied smoothly, “I wasn’t the one who chose.”
The air tightened instantly.
Victoria’s expression darkened for a split second.
Adrian stepped in slightly. “Victoria.”
Just her name.
A warning.
Victoria forced a smile again. “Of course. Enjoy your evening.”
She left—but not without one last glance at Aria.
Cold. Measuring.
Dangerous.
\---
Later, Adrian and Aria stood near the balcony overlooking the city lights.
The noise of the event continued behind them, but here, it was quieter.
“You handled that well,” Adrian said.
Aria leaned slightly against the railing. “I wasn’t trying to impress her.”
“I noticed.”
A pause.
Aria glanced at him. “Is she a problem?”
Adrian didn’t answer immediately.
Then: “She is… persistent.”
Aria raised an eyebrow. “That sounds like a problem.”
Adrian turned slightly toward her. “Not everything requires your concern.”
Aria smiled faintly. “Everything in your world seems to be ‘not my concern.’”
A brief silence.
Then Adrian said quietly, “You adapt faster than expected.”
Aria met his gaze. “You keep saying that.”
“And I mean it.”
Something lingered between them.
Not trust.
Not comfort.
But awareness.
\---
Inside the hall, Lucas observed from a distance.
He leaned toward another staff member. “Keep an eye on both of them.”
The staff member nodded.
Lucas’s gaze shifted toward Aria.
Something about her presence was changing the usual balance.
And Adrian Kane had noticed it too.
\---
Later that night, as they returned to the mansion, silence filled the car.
Aria stared out the window.
Adrian spoke once.
“You did well today.”
Aria turned slightly. “That sounded almost like praise.”
“It was observation.”
A faint smile crossed her lips. “Still counts.”
Adrian didn’t respond.
But his gaze lingered on her a moment longer than usual.
Outside, the city lights blurred past them.
Inside the car, two people sat side by side…
slowly realizing that their contract was no longer just about appearances.
It was becoming something far more complicated.
And neither of them had the full picture yet.
