Chapter 4 First Rules of the Contract
Morning arrived at the Kane mansion without warmth.
The sunlight filtered through tall windows, but it didn’t soften the atmosphere inside. Everything remained sharp, silent, and carefully controlled.
Aria Monroe stood in front of the mirror, adjusting her simple outfit. Today was the day she would officially begin living under Adrian Kane’s rules—not as a guest, not as a stranger, but as his contract wife.
The thought alone felt unreal.
A knock came at the door.
“Come in,” Aria said.
Lucas Brand entered, holding a sleek black folder.
“Mr. Kane requested this be delivered to you personally,” he said.
Aria turned. “More rules?”
Lucas didn’t smile. “Clarifications.”
She took the folder and opened it.
Inside were additional pages. Neatly typed. Carefully structured. Each line felt less like instructions and more like boundaries.
Rule 1: Maintain public appearance as Mrs. Kane.
Rule 2: Avoid emotional attachment or personal interference.
Rule 3: No unauthorized communication regarding Kane business.
Rule 4: Attend all required public events without refusal.
Rule 5: The contract remains confidential at all times.
Aria exhaled slowly.
“So I’m decoration,” she said quietly.
Lucas replied carefully. “You’re part of an arrangement.”
Aria closed the folder. “Same thing, different words.”
Lucas didn’t respond.
After a pause, Aria asked, “Does he give these rules to everyone?”
Lucas hesitated. “No.”
That answer lingered longer than expected.
Before she could ask more, Lucas stepped aside. “He’s waiting for you downstairs.”

The dining room was already set when Aria arrived.
Adrian Kane sat at the head of the table, reading a document on his tablet. He didn’t look up immediately. He never did things in a rush, not even attention.
“Sit,” he said.
Aria obeyed, but chose a seat slightly farther than before.
Adrian noticed.
“You’re adjusting already,” he said.
“To what?” Aria asked.
“To the house.”
Aria gave a faint smile. “Or to your rules.”
A brief pause.
Then Adrian set the tablet down. “Rules exist for stability.”
Aria leaned slightly forward. “Or control.”
Their eyes met.
Cold against steady.
Adrian studied her for a moment. “You question a lot for someone in your position.”
“I was told not to interfere,” she replied. “Not to stay silent.”
A flicker crossed his expression again—subtle, but present.
Interest.
Breakfast was served, but neither of them rushed to eat.
Silence filled the space between them like an invisible wall.
Then Adrian spoke again. “You received the contract updates.”
“Yes.”
“You will follow them.”
Aria placed her fork down gently. “And if I don’t?”
A pause.
Adrian’s voice remained calm. “Then the agreement ends.”
Simple. Final.
No emotion attached.
Aria nodded slowly. “Understood.”
But something in her eyes changed slightly—not fear, but calculation.
Because contracts could be broken.
And rules could be bent.

After breakfast, Aria walked through the mansion corridors alone.
The house felt different in daylight. Less intimidating, more revealing. She noticed details she missed before—security cameras hidden in corners, staff watching quietly, doors that required access codes.
Nothing here was casual.
Everything was monitored.
She turned a corner and almost collided with someone.
Victoria Hale.
Perfect posture. Expensive perfume. A smile that didn’t reach her eyes.
“Well,” Victoria said, looking Aria up and down. “So you’re the contract bride.”
Aria remained calm. “And you are?”
Victoria smiled slightly. “Someone who actually belongs here.”
The tension was immediate.
Aria didn’t react. “Interesting.”
Victoria stepped closer. “Don’t misunderstand your position. Adrian Kane doesn’t keep things he values. He uses them.”
Aria met her gaze. “Good thing I’m not here to be kept.”
A flicker of irritation crossed Victoria’s face.
Before she could respond, footsteps approached.
Adrian.
He appeared at the end of the corridor, expression unreadable.
“What is this?” he asked.
Victoria quickly changed her tone. “Just welcoming your wife.”
Adrian’s eyes shifted briefly to Aria.
“Leave us,” he said to Victoria.
Victoria hesitated, then left reluctantly.
Silence returned.
Adrian stepped closer. “Do not engage in unnecessary conversations.”
Aria tilted her head slightly. “She came to me.”
“That doesn’t matter.”
“Everything here seems to not matter,” Aria replied quietly.
A pause.
Adrian studied her for a long moment. “You are not here to make enemies.”
Aria looked at him directly. “Then why does it feel like I already have one?”
Something shifted in his expression—but only for a second.
Then it was gone.
“Stay within your boundaries,” he said.
Aria nodded slightly. “As you wish.”
But as he turned away, Aria’s gaze lingered on him.
Because beneath all the control, rules, and silence…
Something about this house didn’t feel stable at all.
And she was beginning to realize—
she was not just living inside Adrian Kane’s world.
She was being tested by it.
