Chapter 23 A Jealous Encounter

Chapter 23 A Jealous Encounter

The tension inside Kane Corporation didn’t fade after the archive incident.

It sharpened.

Every movement Aria Monroe made now felt observed, measured, and quietly challenged.

Not openly.

But deliberately.

And she knew exactly who was behind most of it.

Victoria Hale.

\---

That afternoon, Aria remained in the tower longer than usual.

Not because she needed to.

But because she refused to leave just because someone wanted her uncomfortable.

She walked through the executive floor slowly, taking in everything—the quiet conversations, the shifting glances, the subtle changes in behavior whenever she passed.

She had become a topic.

A variable.

A disruption.

And she could feel it.

\---

Inside Adrian’s office, she stood by the glass wall, looking down at the city below.

The height didn’t intimidate her.

If anything, it made everything clearer.

Power always looked stable from a distance.

Until you saw the cracks up close.

The door opened behind her.

She didn’t turn immediately.

“I thought you preferred observing from a distance,” she said calmly.

A soft laugh followed.

Victoria Hale stepped in.

“I do,” she replied, closing the door behind her. “But sometimes, proximity gives better results.”

Aria finally turned.

Their eyes met.

And the atmosphere shifted instantly.

\---

“You’re getting comfortable here,” Victoria said, walking further into the room.

Aria crossed her arms slightly.

“I adapt quickly,” she replied.

Victoria’s lips curved faintly.

“Yes,” she said. “That’s exactly what makes you dangerous.”

A pause.

Then she added,

“And inconvenient.”

\---

Aria tilted her head slightly.

“Inconvenient to who?” she asked.

Victoria stepped closer.

“To anyone who prefers control,” she said.

Her gaze flicked briefly toward Adrian’s desk.

Then back to Aria.

“And especially to those who don’t like sharing it.”

\---

That was the first clear signal.

Aria noticed it immediately.

“This isn’t just about the company,” she said.

Victoria smiled.

“No,” she agreed. “It isn’t.”

\---

Silence stretched between them.

Then Victoria spoke again.

“You’ve changed him.”

Aria frowned slightly. “Excuse me?”

Victoria’s expression sharpened.

“Adrian,” she said simply. “He doesn’t adjust for anyone.”

A pause.

“But for you?” she continued. “He’s making exceptions.”

\---

Aria studied her carefully.

“And that bothers you,” she said.

Victoria didn’t deny it.

“Let’s call it… awareness,” she replied.

A pause.

Then her voice lowered slightly.

“You walked into a system that has been stable for years,” she said. “And suddenly, things are shifting.”

\---

Aria stepped closer.

“That sounds like a problem you should take up with him,” she said.

Victoria smiled again.

“I might,” she replied. “But right now, I’m more interested in you.”

\---

The tension grew sharper.

Not loud.

But cutting.

Aria didn’t look away.

“Why?” she asked.

Victoria’s eyes darkened slightly.

“Because you don’t belong here,” she said.

\---

That statement landed differently.

Not as an insult.

But as a challenge.

Aria’s voice stayed calm.

“And yet I’m still here.”

Victoria nodded slowly.

“Yes,” she said.

A pause.

“Which means either you’re more capable than expected…”

She stepped even closer.

“…or someone is protecting you more than they should.”

\---

Before Aria could respond, the door opened again.

Adrian Kane walked in.

His presence shifted the room instantly.

The air tightened.

Victoria stepped back slightly, but her expression didn’t change.

“You always arrive at interesting moments,” she said lightly.

Adrian’s gaze moved between them.

“Or necessary ones,” he replied.

\---

Aria didn’t move.

But she felt the shift.

Not protection.

Not exactly.

But something close to it.

\---

Victoria turned toward Adrian fully now.

“She’s becoming more involved than you intended,” she said.

Adrian didn’t respond immediately.

Then—

“That is not your concern,” he said calmly.

Victoria raised an eyebrow.

“Isn’t it?” she asked.

A pause.

Then she added,

“Considering how deeply everything is connected.”

\---

That line carried weight.

Aria noticed it.

So did Adrian.

His expression hardened slightly.

“Leave,” he said.

\---

For a moment, it seemed like Victoria might push back.

But instead, she smiled faintly.

“Careful, Adrian,” she said softly.

A pause.

Then she glanced at Aria.

“Some disruptions don’t stabilize. They collapse everything.”

\---

And then she left.

The door closed behind her.

\---

Silence filled the office.

But it wasn’t the same silence as before.

This one carried something sharper.

More personal.

\---

Aria turned toward Adrian.

“That wasn’t just about business,” she said.

Adrian didn’t deny it.

“No,” he replied.

A pause.

Aria studied him.

“She’s not just a rival,” she said. “She’s invested.”

Adrian’s gaze shifted slightly.

“In what way?” he asked.

Aria didn’t hesitate.

“In you.”

\---

That hung in the air.

Unspoken.

But undeniable.

Adrian didn’t react immediately.

Then he said calmly,

“That is irrelevant.”

Aria let out a faint breath.

“Not to her,” she said.

\---

Another silence.

Then Aria added quietly,

“And not to the situation either.”

\---

Adrian walked toward the desk slowly.

“She is a variable,” he said.

Aria frowned slightly.

“That’s how you describe her?”

Adrian nodded.

“Yes.”

\---

Aria shook her head slightly.

“No,” she said. “She’s more than that.”

A pause.

“She’s watching me like I’m replacing something.”

\---

That made Adrian stop.

Just for a second.

But Aria noticed.

\---

The realization settled between them.

This wasn’t just rivalry.

It wasn’t just business.

And it definitely wasn’t coincidence.

\---

Aria looked at him one last time.

“Whatever this is,” she said quietly, “it’s not just about the past anymore.”

Adrian met her gaze.

“I know.”

\---

And that was the truth.

The conflict was no longer just hidden in files and old decisions.

It had moved into the present.

Into relationships.

Into power shifts.

Into emotions no one wanted to admit.

\---

And Victoria Hale…

was no longer just watching.

She was reacting.

Which meant one thing.

Aria Monroe had officially become a threat—

not just to the truth they were hiding…

but to the balance they had been maintaining.
