Chapter 76 The Spy Between Us
Chapter 76
Darcy's POV
"What are you talking about? If you know the truth, why didn't you tell Adrian?" I grit as occasionally look behind me.
She scoffs. "I did but because of his hatred for me, he hung up before I can tell him the truth."
I remember the days she's talking about. It should be the day that she called while he was driving.
"How did you find out the truth?" I demand.
"I have my ways, besides that not the most important thing right now. We need to figure out a way to win the case." Urgency lace her voice.
I don't want to believe it but I can't pretend I don't notice it.
Sincerity.
Adrian's mother is sincere.
"Are you even listening to me Darcy?" She grumbles, snapping me out of my train of thoughts.
I pace back and forth as I bite my fingertip. "Yes, I am. What do you suggest we do? Losing Hazel will kill him."
"Of course, I know that. Before you entered the picture, I didn't believe that he is capable of loving anyone else aside his child."
Her words are reassuring that what we have is real and shouldn't be taken for granted.
"You know we love each other, yet you want me to keep the truth from him. Why?" I frown.
She sighs. "Can you bear to tell him that truth? Won't it kill you first?"
My heart skip a beat and I stagger. My hand tremble.
Why does she have to spell it out? Does she think I don't know? That I didn't think it through?
"The truth isn't always as pleasant as it seems. Before forcing that bitter pill down Adrian's throat, ask yourself if you can?"
My legs give out making me fall to the ground. I gasp for air.
It's as if nails are piercing my bones. Everywhere begins to spin and the head feels fuzzy.
"Get a grip of your Darcy!" She suddenly barks, making me widen my eyes.
"You've probably made a lot of promises to stand by him, protect and love him. Is this how you want to do it?" Her voice pierce through my ears.
"I'm not a good mother but that doesn't mean that I will allow a weakling to be with my son and granddaughter."
I choke out a sob, "what the hell do you want from me? I'm trying."
"Then try harder. Now, I know one thing or two about empathy and that's why I'm doing all I can from here."
Neither of us says anything. Only our breathing echos.
"Thank you Darcy," her voice is low.
Slowly, I open my blurry eyes. Did she just...
She continues. "We're the only women in Adrian's life. Hazel is but a child. We should fight to protect them. I'll do my best too."
"This is the time for me to step up as a mother. I'm not doing it because I want Adrian or your forgiveness but because it's my responsibility."
"Take care, my child." She adds and ends the call.
The phone fall off from my grip. I fan my face with my hands. If Adrian's mother can step up, what's stopping me?
I don't think Adrian's mother wants to show her face to her son, especially at this time. So she'll just send evidences that can increase our chances of winning the case.
It's not my first time going to court. I'll definitely do well.
Adrian's mother strengthens my resolve. I sniffle and wipe my tears with the back of my hands.
I sit on the bench for a while to cool off.
Ten minutes later, I head back inside. The time is almost one in the afternoon.
Making lunch isn't a bad idea to break the ice. The tension in the house is suffocating me and I can no longer pretend not to care.
I decide to make one of Adrian's favorite meal - curry chicken sauce and rice.
Hazel can start eating solid food, so I'll just feed her.
As I remove my apron, he walks into the kitchen but freeze when his eyes lands on me.
"There you are. Lunch is ready, let's eat." I beam and he hesitates.
"C'mon baby," I urged and pull him towards a chair.
I know what he wants to say. My mood swings confuses him but I can't explain everything to him in simple words. At least not yet.
"Where's Hazel?" I inquire.
"I just put her to sleep." He answers.
Oh, my poor baby. I haven't really had her time since yesterday.
"She must be mad at me," I murmur.
"No. She's not."
I raise my head and smile at him, nodding. "Thank you."
He sits. His gaze follows my every move as I dish the meals.
"Is something on my face?" I chuckle as I look at him from underneath my lashes.
"Were you crying?" His voice is low and cold.
I pause for a while and laugh. "Cry? Why will I do that?"
Adrian isn't dumb but I don't want to talk about anything that will make things weirder than it already is.
I stand beside him to place his food in front of him. He wraps his hand around my waist and rest his head on my stomach.
"I'm sorry for disappointing you." He whisper.
I breathe in sharply and dig my fingers into his hair, massaging his scalp.
"I didn't mean any of those things I said to you yesterday. You don't have to be sorry because you're the best man in the world."
"I should be apologizing," I try to kneel but he stops me.
"Don't do that. A queen doesn't kneel." He smile warmly. "If you ever complain, it's because of my incompetence."
I shake my head as I blink back my tears. That's not true.
"So in the future, I'll never make you suffer." His words stick more than it probably intend.
I stand on my toes and pulls him closer with the back of his neck. I close my eyes as I kiss him.
It is slow. Both of us pouring our emotions into it. Intentionally. Sincerely.
We finally break off the kiss and I sniffle.
"I cried because I felt bad for how I treated you yesterday. It was uncalled for even though it was just an act." I confess.
He furrows his eyebrow. "What does that mean?"
"It means that, I was putting on an act to deceive a certain someone."
His face only twists in confusion the more. So I help him sit and I hold his hands.
"Yesterday, I coincidentally found out that Anna is the spy and abs work for Mrs Carlton. She was desperate to get evidence and since Maleek was coming over, I didn't want her to know anything that would work against us."
I hand my head low. "I'm sorry."
Gently, he hold my face. His eyes tears up. "So, you didn't mean any of those things you said?" He asks with a shaky voice.
"I didn't my love."
He pull me against his chest and holds my waist tightly. I also circle my hands around his neck.
He cries. "I thought I'll lose you too."
"Never. I'm not going anywhere!" I pat his back.
He gasp loudly.
"Guess what, I have a recording of Anna's confession." I announce excitedly.
"Nothing is more important than you."
