Chapter 63 Too Late for Mercy
Adrian's POV
"After everything, ma'am Darcy realized that all the cameras in the house are bugged, so she ordered that everything be changed.
That explains the alert. Initially, she told me that she wanted to have a change of wardrobe, turns out she was lying.
The safety of everyone is what she's been thinking about.
I clench hands tightly until my knuckles become white. The muscles in my body tense and the veins in my neck bulge.
"And what exactly were all of you doing while my wife was being cornered in my own house?" My eyes become bloodshot.
"I... We," he stutters and that only pisses me off the more.
"I don't pay you guys to be cowards and let my wife take all the hits while you come here and plead."
Listening to everything they put Darcy through. The condescending words and the hurt they cause her.
I know how horrible they are and the thought of Darcy facing them alone makes my skin crawl.
If only the head of security was competent.
I snapped my gaze towards Julius who still remains kneeling. I land a hard punch on his face and he falls on his back.
He knows the feud between us, yet he allowed them into my premises.
"Because of you, my woman went through so much stress which makes her body collapse. Have you asked if you played a part in all of this?" I roared as my nose flared.
"I'm sorry sir. I... I didn't know they were the ones at first," be tries to explain as he holds his bleeding nose.
"Damn it Julius!" I bark. "You know I hate excuses the most."
"And since when do you allow people into my premises before confirming their identities? Is that how you've been working?" My eyes blaze.
He shakes his head frantically and moves uncomfortably but dares not stand up.
"I'll do better!" He says.
"You only get to do that if you are able to retain your job," I sneered and he raises his head to look at me, his eyes wide open.
He kneels properly. "I'm betting everything I have, including my life that if I get a second chance, I'll won't slack off ever again."
I fold my hands against my chest as I turn away from him.
How dare they insult Darcy? Call her names.
She has done more for Hazel than they have and will ever do. Before now, she isn't family, yet she take and love Hazel like she's her own. family.
People don't seem to value peace anymore. Hence, the disrespect and disrupted manner of reasoning.
They hate me. The kindness and then distance, didn't make it any less.
So, it's time I make them remember who exactly they're dealing with. There's no connection between us again.
I have to out them in their place sooner than later.
Despite everything, I can't understand why Darcy didn't tell me. Is it that she didn't trust me or what?
"Why didn't you inform me about the situation?" I ask Julius, glaring at him over my shoulder.
"I wanted to but ma'am Darcy told me not to bother as she would inform you, herself," he replies.
"But she didn't. She intentionally did not tell me. Why will she choose to suffer in silence?"
Julius coughs slightly
"Tell me."
"I guess it's because she didn't want to bother you, especially after finding out about what happened the company. Ma'am Darcy didn't want to be a liability or fail you."
Sounds like what Darcy can do. But why will she think that I'll see her a burden? Have I not been expressing my feelings properly?
I brush back my hair as a frustrated sigh escapes my lips. While I was busy protecting my business, she fought alone with no one to protect her.
I wave Julius off and he hurries out, leaving me to my thoughts.
The reason she fought and tried so hard wasn't even for herself but because of Hazel.
What did I do to deserve her?
While I was busy with, she keeps thinking about me.
The doctor doesn't know why it's taking her so long to regain consciousness. Will I forgive myself if anything happens to her?
My heartbeat quicken and my eyes burn of unshed tears. I promised to protect her but I've not been keeping to that promise as I should.
Darcy has done enough for us. It's time, I take it up from here.
I quickly wipe the single tear and sniffle. Dialing a number that I haven't called in years.
"Adrian Ashford?" My old friend calls out, a bit unsure.
"Yeah, it's me. I'm calling because I need a help," I say directly.
He laughs aloud. "What makes me think that you did call because you care about me. Turns out, you only want to use me."
I go silent for a while. I should wait for him to speak but my impatience gets the best of me.
"I need update on Carlton company."
He scoffs but doesn't object.
"You mean the one that your late...," his voice trails off before adding. "Sorry. I mean the one that Camille managed?"
"Yes and I want answers before the end of today," I order in a low voice.
He scoffs and whispered, "such a rock."
I hang up the call.
Jim told me to give him a few minutes and he would call back. This is over an hour.
Please wake up Darcy, so I might finally lose my sanity.
"Sir!...sir!" Julius runs in panting.
I furrow my eyebrows as I watch him run towards me.
He points at the door, signaling with his hand.
"She's awake!" He finally talks.
I don't waste another second as I dash out of the room, running straight to her room.
I push the door open and my breath catches in my throat. My heart pounded. My hands trembles as I look at her
She rests against the wall. Her eyes on Hazel.
Darcy doesn't have the usual spark in her eyes. One that I would recognize from a distance or in a crowd.
My leg hits the door mistakenly and she turn to look at me. Almost small, the excitement on her face melt my heart.
"Baby," her voice is hoarse.
I flash her a smile but it doesn't reach my eyes. My heart shatters into a million pieces as I see what they had done to my Darcy.
"Stop staring like that and sit down," she laughs a bit and points to the chair.
I ignore her and sit on the bed. I bite my lower lip so my tears don't come rolling.
She's hurting and I don't want to add to it.
"I've missed you." Gently, I pull her into a warm hug and she wraps her hand around my waist.
Her body is currently fragile, so I handle her with care. My head is spinning. When I saw her unconscious body, the worst events crept to my mind.
"I love you too," she says, smiling.
Silence stretch.
"Adrian, I know what you're thinking," she says and breaks the hug.
I hang my head know.
Aside from guilt, anger is eating me up from within.
She hold my face in her hands. "Adrian, Don't do anything."
My phone buzzes and I click on the notification.
My jaw clench as my eyes scan through the words.
"Adrian, promise me."
"Too late."
