Chapter 94 Chapter 94
Chapter 94 Chapter 94
LENORE
My stomach twisted. I’d figured that was what had happened but hearing it didn’t make it any less upsetting, and I swallowed before asking, “Was it the King?”
Killian shook his head, sliding his right hand under my shirt to rest on my lower back. “They were witches,” he answered, and I frowned.
Witches? “How did they get into the city?” He’d once told me there were no witches in the city, so did they get an invite or did they just… magic their way in. I thought that wasn’t possible.
“Ah. The witch that broke the spell on the invitations took Aurel’s blood as payment,” he said and my brows shot up. “They used it to trick the wards into thinking they were him.”
“Oh.” My stomach twisted even more because that meant the attack was my fault. After all, I was the one who’d begged him to prevent the tournament from taking place. But why though?
“I have no idea,” he muttered, his fingers tracing patterns on my back, and it took me a moment to realize I’d said that out loud. “Fabien is working on finding out the coven they belong to, but the reason pro—” A frown overtook his expression and for a couple of seconds, his eyes were vacant like he was thinking of something. Then he shook his head and kissed my jaw again, then my lips, before burying his face in my neck.
“Who knows?” he continued as I wrapped my arms around his shoulders, playing with the ends of his hair. “Most likely something that has to do with what my father did or is doing.”
I actually meant why did they come all the way to the vampire palace protected by vampires in the vampire city to attack the vampire prince? Surely it would have made more sense to attack him during the spell breaking transaction rather than coming all the way to the one place they’d be at a disadvantage.
I was beyond glad they didn’t decide to be rational though.
“I’m sorry,” I said, and Killian lifted his head from my shoulder, his forehead creased. “You met the witch because of me.”
Killian’s frown deepened slightly as it dawned on me that we’d be leaving to meet a witch in about an hour and a half because of me again. “For you, my love. Not because of you. The only reason you should be apologizing is if you ordered the witches to attack me,” he said and I raised a brow.
“Just an apology would cut it?”
He gave me a blank stare. “Why would you ever need to apologize?”
There he goes again… I averted my gaze, pressing my lips together as my chest fluttered. “You’re ridiculous.”
“…Now that’s because of you,” he replied and I couldn’t stop the smile that broke out on my face. When I returned my attention to him, he was grinning, and though his eyes were still glowing, they weren’t as bright as they had been this morning.
“Are you sure about meeting with another witch today though?” I asked. A protection spell being placed on me would be nice, but more than that, I didn’t want him to get attacked again.
Killian tipped his head to the side before leaning in to give me a soft and sweet kiss that sent a tingling sensation all the way down to my toes, and when he broke the kiss, I was the one with the goofy smile now. “I like when you’re worried about me,” he muttered against my lips.
“So you said.”
A short laugh escaped him and the hand under my shirt slid upward a bit before he pulled his head back so I could see his face. “It’s going to be fine. She’s my uncle’s friend.”
The mention of his uncle reminded me that despite the man being the King’s younger brother, he cared about Killian, and once again, I was grateful Killian had him in his corner. “Why didn’t you ask her to break the spells on the invitations instead?”
“Ehh. I didn’t want to tie my uncle to it.”
My lips curved into a small smile at him being protective of the man, and the way his uncle had stepped between him and his father last night came to mind. I hadn’t really heard what he’d said to the King, and even though he’d practically thrown Killian off the King, it was clear by his stance that he’d been trying to protect him.
Then the witch attack came back to mind—him being essence drunk was a reminder after all—and I heaved a sigh. “Are you okay?” I asked, moving my hand to his face to cup his cheek, and he didn’t hesitate to lean into my touch.
I’d never been in a fight with a witch before—hell, the only fights I’d ever been in were with girls who took their name-calling too far, and I’d always had my ass handed to me before Wayne or Cameron showed up. Killian had obviously won the fight, but I was pretty sure fighting one witch wasn’t easy. Not to talk of several.
“I’m fine… Cameron helped me.”
“Huh?” was the only thing that came out of my mouth as I wondered why he mentioned Cameron. Then I fully processed his words and my brows shot up. “Oh!”
So that was what was different between them this morning.
“He came out when the situation got rather… tricky.”
A smile bloomed on my face before I clicked my tongue at the fact that I most likely wouldn’t have found out if Aurora hadn’t told me Killian was essence drunk. Killian could have ended up telling me, but I doubted Cameron would have seeing as he felt that me being with Killian was a bad idea. That was a bit annoying, but him putting himself in danger to help Killian despite his disapproval… I didn’t think I could describe how much it meant to me.
I should thank him.
