Chapter 92 Chapter 92

Chapter 92 Chapter 92
LENORE
My entire body felt heavy, as though someone had poured lead into my bones.
I simply wanted to bury myself beneath the sheets and sleep until tomorrow, but instead, here I was, pulling on a jacket because we were leaving the city. It was almost eight, and though we wouldn’t leave for his uncle’s place until ten, we were heading to one of Killian’s houses in the city first. The reason being the King definitely had people watching us, so if we went straight to his uncle’s from the palace, the King would know the spell on the invitations had been broken.
The plan was for Fabien, Calley, Aurora, Cameron, Killian, and me to go to the house together. Then, at ten, Killian and I would leave for his uncle’s while the others stayed behind. Since Fabien and Killian were usually in the same place—and the same went for Calley and me—the King wouldn’t realize that I had left the city.
“Lenore?” Calley called from the bedroom as I tugged my hair free from beneath the collar of my jacket and I glanced toward the closet door.
“Coming!” I grabbed my phone from the island and quickly headed into the room. Calley was no longer in the room, but the bed was and my face heated up the moment my gaze landed on it, my mind supplying a rather vivid memory of Killian’s head between my thighs followed by him saying chicken biryani got dethroned right after he rolled off me.
Apparently, I’d taken the spot of his favorite food.
The heat in my face intensified and I quickly pushed the memory aside.
Calley had left the bedroom door open and was standing in the suite’s hallway with Aurora. The study door was also open and Killian, who was talking to Fabien a couple of steps inside the study, flashed me a bright smile the moment I stepped out. It wasn’t odd, but his eyes were still glowing, and I tipped my head to the side.
Before I napped for an hour after we… did all that, I’d asked him if he was okay twice and was met with never been better and I’m perfectly fine. He did look perfectly fine, but—
“Is Killian okay?” I asked no one in particular, glancing between Calley and Aurora as Aurora smiled at me.
“Hey, Lenore.”
I returned her smile. “Hey—”
“He’s high,” Calley cut in, her gaze fixed on her phone, and I furrowed my brows.
“Huh?”
“Essence drunk,” Aurora stated, nudging Calley’s shoulder a bit hard, and Calley shrugged.
“Same thing.”
I knew what essence was—the magic that made supernaturals what they were—and I knew what drunk meant, so the two together... “How does that happen?”
“One way or the other,” came Killian’s voice and I shifted my gaze to him as he walked over and pressed a kiss to the side of my head, his arm snaking around my waist. “Are you ready to leave?”
I nodded. After waking me up about thirty minutes ago, he’d told me all I needed was my beautiful self when I asked him if I needed to pack anything, and I had that down.
A sudden draft blew in, drawing my attention to the window in the hallway and my brows snapped together when I saw it was broken. “What happened to the window?” Did the King—
“Aurel broke it,” Killian said, and relief coursed through me at the fact that the King hadn’t sent someone to attack Killian while I was asleep, but my frown still deepened slightly.
“Why?”
“He’s stupid,” he answered with a shrug and I absent-mindedly bobbed my head as I glanced at the window once more.
“Why are you nodding like that’s an acceptable answer?” Aurora asked, puzzled, while Calley burst into laughter, and I paused, my mouth twisting into a grimace. “Oh, I’m telling Aurel.”
I shot her a pleading look. “Please don’t. Where’s he by the way?”
“On the way to my uncle’s,” Killian answered, drawing my attention back to him. It didn't seem like his gaze had shifted from me even for a moment and heat crawled up my neck when my gaze dropped to his lips. “He’ll come back to the city with us.”
“Okay. We’re all set,” Fabien stated as he walked out of the study, shutting the door behind him. Killian dropped his arm from my waist and took my hand in his as he turned to face the hallway, pressing a kiss to the back of my palm.
“I’m driving,” Calley said, trying to snatch the car keys from Fabien’s hand, but he instantly held them out of her reach.
“Your own car? Sure.”
She shot him a dirty look while Killian headed for the suite door, my hand still in his, and a sweet and salty scent suddenly washed over me, making me furrow my brows. The scent only intensified the moment we got to the main hallway and my frown deepened as it coated my tongue. It took me a moment to remember that I'd encountered a similar scent in the vault a couple of days ago—though this one wasn’t as overwhelming—and I wondered if it was some sort of air freshener or cleaning agent.
What ridiculous brand were they using though?
Two men were standing at the door of the suite next to ours and just before we walked past them, Cameron stepped out of the suite.
“Cameron,” I called, raising my brows as I came to a stop, making Killian pause too, and Cameron smiled at me. “You moved?”
“Yeah, last night.” His gaze drifted to Killian while Aurora, Calley, and Fabien walked past us. Then he frowned slightly and my gaze also shifted to Killian.
I thought I’d find him frowning at Cameron, but he actually looked… friendly? I mean, he didn’t look like he was going to hug him or anything, but he also wasn’t giving him a hard stare. And Cameron didn’t look like he wanted to throttle him either.
…Did something happen between them while I was asleep?
“Is he still high?” Cameron asked.
“Drunk,” Aurora corrected while Calley answered, “Yes.”
Seriously, what happened while I was asleep? How had Killian gotten essence drunk?
Then the implication finally hit me—someone had died while I was asleep. My mind stuttered, my gaze jerking back to Killian who was now staring at me with raised brows, and I realized my grip on his hand had tightened. He moved closer to me while Cameron walked away, and I asked, “What happened last night?”
Did the King actually send people? Or had something else happened?
Killian heaved a sigh, like he’d been hoping I wouldn’t ask, and I tilted my head. “...When we get to my place?”
I stared at him for a moment longer before nodding and he leaned down to press a quick kiss to my lips.
