Chapter 60 Lines Drawn
Godiva POV
I could feel my legs tremble as I stood before them for minutes without anyone saying a word, but I definitely knew it was bad news. Seeing Mrs. Young there affirmed my suspicion. "Can someone please say something so I can finally be at ease," I thought to myself, standing still before them.
“Here,” Mrs. Young said, finally breaking the silence as she handed me an envelope.
I could feel the room spin so violently that I almost lost my balance standing. Is this one of those scenarios where they pay me to stay away from their son? I thought to myself, letting out a smile of disbelief.
“Please, may I ask what this is for?” I asked politely, pointing at the envelope still in Mrs. Young’s hand.
“It is your pay. We’ve covered the payment up till the end of the month,” Mr. Young said.
“Alright, thank you, but I’m a little confused, why?” I asked, still sounding collected.
“We learnt from Lis how you’ve been throwing yourself at Jerald and Ben, causing them to engage in a battle at school, which has never been heard of in this family,” Mr. Young continued.
“Never. My boys have never raised a finger on themselves,” Mrs. Young added with her annoying tiny voice, sounding like Gus from Cinderella.
“Ma, you have it all wrong. May I explain what happened?” I asked.
Without waiting for their approval, I was about to forge ahead with my explanation when Ben’s voice interrupted.
“Dad and Ma,” he called out as he walked toward us, coming down the stairs. “How long will I tell you it was all a misunderstanding? It was something I needed to do to get Jerald to open up, at least once, since he actually loves someone. Moreover, the stupid betrothal happened when he was barely a teenager, plus Lis is very manipulative,” he thundered, not stopping for even a second to catch his breath.
“Manners, Ben,” his mum said, giving him a cold stare.
“All Lis told you is trash. Jerald and I proposed to two different girls, and I’m glad Jerald is ready to stand up to you now for his love,” Ben snapped, sounding even more aggressive.
I froze on the spot. I didn’t know whether to excuse myself or pretend I wasn’t hearing all that was happening.
“You shut your mouth and say all you have to say to us when she leaves,” Mr. Young thundered, hitting his desk so hard my body vibrated.
“Miss Godiva, take your pay. Your services are no longer needed,” Mr. Young said, getting up from his seat.
“Okay, you’re sacking her. Let’s see what you can do to the one I love. Will you go and expel her from school?” Ben mocked his parents, laughing.
Ignoring him, Mrs. Young forced the envelope into my hand and walked away.
“Wow,” I managed to say, heaving a sigh of relief, trying hard to stop my tears from falling.
“Diva, I’m sorry we put you through this,” Ben said, patting my back, “but I beg of you, do not take it out on Jerald. He is also a victim.”
“There’s nothing to take out on anybody,” I replied, forcing a fake smile. “After all, I wouldn’t have been comfortable teaching here.”
“We’ll see tomorrow in school,” Ben said as he walked me out the door.
Hearing those words were supposed to make my ears tingle if I had heard them earlier, but hearing them now only made me numb.
All through my walk back home, I was either laughing or talking to myself. All the drama displayed in front of me at the Youngs’ felt surreal. Everything I had only watched in movies played out right in front of me. The only thing they did in the movies that wasn’t displayed there was the father slapping the boy and the boy retorting, “I hate you, Dad,” then running out.
“Well, maybe it’ll happen later on,” I thought to myself, letting out a mischievous laugh.
“My girl!” Dina screamed, running toward me as I approached the quarters. I guess the way I looked downcast gave her a hint that all wasn’t well. Her excitement suddenly turned into a frown.
“What happened at the Youngs’?” Dina asked anxiously, taking my backpack off my shoulders.
“Don’t tell me you waited here for me?” I asked in shock, ignoring her question.
“Yes, I’ve been here since forever,” she replied. “Anyways, what’s the update? Is Ben fine?”
“When I left, he was fine, but after the drama I watched, I’m not so sure if he will survive this night,” I said, laughing aloud. Everything that happened still felt unreal.
“What!” Dina exclaimed after I told her everything that happened at the Youngs’ residence.
“That’s some romantic shi. I wish I was there, I’d have been hyping my man like, ‘Go baby, go honey, go!’” she continued, acting like a cheerleader.
“You’re really a psycho,” I said, nodding as I walked away from her quickly.
“What do you mean by that? You should rejoice that they are ready to fight for their love,” Dina said, jumping in excitement.
“In high school, you think you can fight your parents and win?” I snapped at her.
“Yes, if you set your heart to it,” she said.
“Well, good for you. Congratulations on your relationship,” I said, offering her a handshake.
“What do you mean, girl?” she thundered, ignoring my hand. “Don’t tell me you’re still not going to date Jerald.”
“Well, I am not,” I said seriously.
“What do you mean by that? Bro, he’s ready to fight for you. Plus, you’ve been sacked, what’s the worst that could happen?” Dina said, sounding pissed.
“Mama. Mama is still there,” I replied, downcast.
“Think about it this way, if Jerald is ready to face all the abuse for you, why can’t you do same? Plus, at some point, you need to get a love, so you or Mama have to compromise soon,” she said, smiling mischievously.
“You know what, let’s do this,” I screamed in the block. “What can I actually lose since I’ve lost my job?” I roared, suddenly motivated.
I could see the shock written on Dina’s face when I screamed.
“Hell yeah, let’s do this, woo!” Dina exclaimed, joining me in the scream as we embraced ourselves.
