Chapter 19: Uncomfortable Comfort (Lauren POV)
Chapter 19: Uncomfortable Comfort (Lauren POV)
Sarah's house was dark except for the porch light when Alex dropped me off, the windows reflecting the streetlights like closed eyes.
"Are you sure you'll be okay?" Alex asked as I gathered my jacket from the backseat, my body still humming from our encounter by the lake.
"I'll be fine. Sarah's probably already asleep."
"Call me if anything happens. Anything at all."
I leaned over and kissed him softly, tasting the lingering intensity of everything that had passed between us. "I will."
But as I walked up the driveway, I noticed Tom's car was still in the garage and the living room lamp was on. Someone was awake.
I found Tom sitting at the kitchen table with his laptop open, a cup of coffee growing cold beside him. He looked up when I entered, his expression relieved but concerned.
"Lauren, thank God. Sarah was worried when you didn't come back for dinner."
"Where is Sarah?"
"Book club emergency. Apparently Sandra's going through a messy divorce and needed moral support. She took the wine and tissues and said she'd be back by midnight." Tom closed his laptop and rubbed his eyes. "The girls are asleep. I managed to get them fed and bathed without any major disasters."
"I'm sorry I wasn't here to help. I got... caught up in something."
"Work stuff?"
I hesitated. How much could I tell Tom without confirming his worst fears about my mental state? "Something like that."
"Lauren, can I ask you something? And please, just be honest with me."
I sat down across from him, suddenly exhausted from the emotional rollercoaster of the evening. "Okay."
"What's really going on with you? I mean, I know you're suspended and there's this psychiatric evaluation, but there's something else, isn't there? Something you're not telling us."
His voice was gentle, concerned in the way that made me remember why Sarah had fallen in love with him. Tom was solid, dependable, the kind of man who fixed leaky faucets and coached Little League and never questioned the fundamental order of the universe.
"Tom, I..."
"Because I have to tell you, what happened last night with Sophie really scared me. Those scratches on her window, the way both girls heard sounds... I've been thinking about it all day, and I can't come up with any explanation that makes sense."
My heart started racing. "What are you saying?"
"I'm saying maybe there's more to your story than people want to admit. Maybe you're seeing things that are really there, and everyone else is just too afraid to acknowledge it."
The unexpected support nearly brought tears to my eyes. After Morey's betrayal and the mounting evidence that the supernatural conspiracy reached into the highest levels of the justice system, hearing someone express even tentative belief felt like a lifeline.
"Tom, I wish I could explain everything, but..."
"But it would sound crazy."
"Yes."
He leaned forward, his expression earnest. "Lauren, I'm an accountant. I deal in facts and numbers and logical explanations. But I also saw those scratches on Sophie's window, and I know they didn't come from any tree branch."
I wanted so badly to tell him everything. But how could I drag him into this nightmare? How could I put Sarah's family at even greater risk?
"I can't tell you everything," I said finally. "But I can tell you that Sophie and Emma are in danger as long as I'm here. Whatever's been following me, it's not just targeting me anymore."
"Then we'll protect them. All of us, together."
"Tom, you don't understand. These aren't ordinary threats. They're not something you can protect against with locks and alarm systems."
He reached across the table and covered my hand with his. "Then tell me what kind of threats they are. Let me help."
The warmth of his touch was comforting, but something about the way his thumb stroked across my knuckles made me uncomfortable. It was too intimate, too lingering for a brother-in-law offering support.
"I should probably get some sleep," I said, starting to pull my hand away.
But Tom held on, his grip tightening slightly. "Lauren, wait. I need you to know that Sarah and I... we care about you. More than you might realize."
"I know. And I appreciate..."
"No, I mean really care about you." His other hand moved to rest on my forearm, and I felt heat radiating from his palm through the thin fabric of my shirt. "You're not just Sarah's sister to me. You're... special."
A warning bell started ringing in my head. The way Tom was looking at me had shifted from brotherly concern to something else entirely. Something hungry and opportunistic.
"Tom, I think there's been a misunderstanding..."
"Lauren, I've watched you these past few days, seen how isolated you've become, how everyone's treating you like you're broken. But I don't think you're broken. I think you're beautiful and brave and incredibly vulnerable right now."
His hand moved from my forearm to my shoulder, fingers tracing along my collarbone in a way that made my skin crawl. "And I think you need someone to show you that you're not alone. Someone who appreciates what an amazing woman you are."
"Stop." I tried to stand up, but Tom's hand on my shoulder pressed me back into the chair.
"Sarah doesn't have to know," he continued, his voice dropping to a whisper. "She's always so busy with the girls, so focused on her own life. But I see you, Lauren. I see how much you're hurting, and I want to help."
His hand slid lower, fingertips grazing the edge of my bra through my shirt. The touch was electric in all the wrong ways, sending revulsion rather than desire coursing through my system.
"Tom, you need to stop this right now."
"Just let me comfort you," he murmured, leaning even closer. "Let me show you how much you mean to us. How much you mean to me."
I grabbed his wrist and pulled his hand away from my body. "This is not happening. You're married to my sister, Tom. You have two children sleeping upstairs."
"And they're all asleep. No one has to know."
The casual way he dismissed his family, the calculating look in his eyes as he weighed risk against desire, made me sick to my stomach.
"I'm going upstairs," I said firmly. "And we're never going to speak of this again."
"Lauren, wait. You're upset, but you don't have to be. I'm not trying to hurt you. I'm trying to..."
The front door opened, and Sarah's voice carried through the house. "Hello? Anyone still up?"
Tom immediately stepped back, his expression shifting from predatory to guilty in the space of a heartbeat. We heard Sarah's keys hit the hall table, her footsteps moving toward the kitchen.
"In here, honey," Tom called out, his voice artificially cheerful. "Just talking with Lauren."
Sarah appeared in the doorway, her cheeks flushed from the cold night air and probably a few glasses of wine. She took in the scene; me standing rigidly by the table, Tom positioned too close, the tension crackling between us.
"Everything okay?" she asked, her eyes narrowing slightly.
"Fine," I said quickly. "I was just going to bed."
"How was book club?" Tom asked, moving to Sarah's side and kissing her cheek with practiced domesticity.
"Emotional. Sandra's really going through it." Sarah kept watching me, clearly sensing that something was off. "Lauren, are you okay? You look upset."
"Just tired. It's been a long day."
Tom wrapped his arm around Sarah's waist, the picture of devoted husband. But when Sarah wasn't looking, he caught my eye and gave me a look that was part apology, part promise that this conversation wasn't over.
"Well, I'm glad you're both here," Sarah said. "We need to talk about Friday. About the evaluation with Dr. Voss."
"Can we discuss it tomorrow?" I asked, desperate to escape the kitchen and Tom's presence. "I really need to sleep."
"Of course. Get some rest." Sarah moved toward me as if to hug me, but something in my posture must have warned her off. "Sleep well, Lauren."
I practically fled to the guest room, closing the door behind me and leaning against it as if Tom might try to follow. My hands were shaking, and I felt dirty in a way that had nothing to do with my earlier encounter with Alex.
The contrast was stark and disturbing. With Alex, even in the midst of supernatural terror and professional catastrophe, I'd felt desire and connection. With Tom, despite being in the supposed safety of my sister's home, I'd felt nothing but violation and disgust.
I could hear Sarah and Tom talking in low voices downstairs, but I couldn't make out their words. Part of me wanted to march back down there and tell Sarah exactly what her husband had tried to do. But what proof did I have? It would be my word against his, and given my current reputation for seeing things that weren't there, who would believe me?
Besides, Sarah had enough to worry about without discovering that her husband was a predator. The girls needed stability, and Sarah needed to focus on supporting me through the next few days without the additional burden of marital crisis.
I stripped off my clothes and climbed into bed, but sleep felt impossible. Every time I closed my eyes, I felt Tom's hands on my skin, heard the entitled hunger in his voice as he offered to "comfort" me.
The worst part was the timing. He'd waited until Sarah was gone, until the girls were asleep, until I was at my most vulnerable. He'd calculated the risk and decided that my current state of professional disgrace made me an easy target.
How long had he been thinking about this? How many family dinners had he sat through while fantasizing about getting me alone? How many times had he watched me with Sarah and the girls, calculating when an opportunity might present itself?
My phone buzzed on the nightstand, a text from Alex: "Made it home safe. Thinking about you. Sleep well."
In one evening, I'd experienced intimacy with Alex that felt both genuine and somehow orchestrated, then been propositioned by my brother-in-law in what should have been the safest place in my world.
I turned off the phone without responding and pulled the covers over my head, trying to block out the sound of Sarah and Tom's voices still murmuring downstairs. They sounded normal, domestic, like any married couple discussing their day before bed.
But I knew now that Tom had another side, a calculating predator who saw my vulnerability as an opportunity. And the worst part was that I couldn't tell Sarah without potentially destroying her family and adding to the chaos that was already consuming my life.
Tomorrow I would have to sit across from them at breakfast, pretend that nothing had happened, and continue letting Tom play the role of concerned brother-in-law.
