CHAPTER 38

“Our spy failed.” Rajesh sighed looking out the window of his laboratory “Their alpha is still alive. I wonder what went wrong.”

“You should’ve sent me.” David said.

“No, no, David. The time for you is near but not now. When the experiment is finished, you will be at the forefront. Above every alpha, you will rise. The time is yet to be ripe.”

“When will it be?”

“Patience, child. Patience. Go to the cabin and meet the others. I’ll join you shortly.”

“Where are you going to?”

“I have something to check out. I’ll come to the cabin soon. Just tell them; our spy failed.”

David obeyed as he left Rajesh in his lab. Rajesh waited until he heard no footstep nearby or any breathing. He wore a disguise, walked out of the office and into the town. He made sure he made no contact with anyone. Moving through the crowd at the peak of the morning. He walked into the forest and moved quickly and almost quietly. He made sure no one was following him. He arrived at the entrance of the catacombs. He looked around first before descending. In the catacombs, he removed his disguise and walked through the maze. He arrived at a series of descending staircases arranged in a spiral. It was dark deep inside so he brought a flashlight with him. He moved slowly as the staircase has no rail. It was cold and dusty at the floor level. Rajesh tried not to breath in too hard. He stopped in front of a blank wall. He looked at it and whispered some kind of language. The wall, brick by brick, opened up; revealing a metal door. He pulled out a key out of his pocket and inserted it into the door; he turned the key. They door loudly opened up a small gap. A massive gust of wind escaped through the door. He pushed the door, walked in and shut the door.

“Rajesh said he’ll be here soon. You have to wait.” David said to impatient Erik.

“How soon is soon? You have said it for more than five times.” Erik impatiently said.

“Erik is right, David. Is he coming or not? We do not have all day to stay in one place waiting for one man.” Alexander said with Iliana besides him. “Where is he anyway?”

“I’m right here.” Rajesh walked in.

“Rajesh,” Jacqueline called “Where have you been? We have been waiting for you.”

“I was finishing my work at my laboratory.”

“You shouldn’t have called for a meeting so early that you won’t be punctual.” Alexander said

“I’m here now. Let’s begin.”

Everybody found a spot to sit. Rachel on a couch with Jacqueline and Catherine. Alexander on the armrest of the couch next to Rachel. David and Erik chose to stand while Rajesh on a stool by the counter.

“As you are all well aware, our spy failed to carry out the given task. Although he was left severely injured, he still breathes. I am not surprised; he is one of the Shadow pack it’s hard to get rid of them. Even those spies were shadow pack. I was surprised how they stayed alive until they were executed. Anyway, I summoned you all here so I can know what we all think should be the spies next move. Any thoughts?”

“Let her return.” Catherine said

“Why?” Rajesh questioned

“If she stays any longer she will be found out and who know what they will do to her.”

“You have a point, Catherine. But for as long as I know the Shadow pack are quite merciful. Rachel, what do you think?”

“I…think she should stay. If she stays while the alpha still lives, you will no longer get any update on the alpha or his plans.”

“That is a valid point, Rachel.” Rajesh agreed. “I, on the other hand, I am conflicted. I did say she will return when the task is done, I never thought of when the task isn’t done.”

“Let her stay.” Alexander said. No one had anything to say opposing Alexander’s thought. No one asked for a reason too. “If that’s all you have to say, then we are dismissed.”

“One last thing. Everybody, stay safe. You can go.” Rajesh dismissed the meeting and left the cabin with David.

“Hi, Rachel.” Erik walked closer to Rachel.

“Erik, how are you?” Iliana greeted but Erik’s tongue was cut by Alexander’s glare.

“Erik,” Alexander called.

“Yes, Alexander?”

“We would like to talk to you.”

“About what?”

“Come with us to the motel.”

Erik almost showed excitement to Alexander talking to him but contained himself. He wondered what they wanted to talk about. Nothing particular came to mind.

They arrived at the motel and stopped at the premises.

“We’re here. What do you want to talk about?”

“Recently, I’ve had these dreams and I need to find out certain things from the library hidden beneath the catacombs.” Iliana explained

“There’s a library beneath the catacombs?”

“Apparently.” Alexander answered.

“And I have found out that Rajesh is the only one with access to the library. He locked it away from everyone but himself.” Iliana continued her explanation.

“If he locked it away, then it’s for a good cause. I trust his judgement.”

“Do you?” Alexander questioned.

“Well…a little bit. So why are you telling me this?”

“Because…” Iliana started

“We need you to use your gifts on Rajesh.” Alexander finished the statement.

Erik rose his brows and let everything sink in. “No way.”

“Erik, please.” Iliana pleaded

“I won’t use them on Rajesh.”

“Why not?”

“Because, he’s Rajesh. The most respected man in the Silver Creek. I can’t have him saying things he doesn’t want to.”

“Erik, I know this is a hard choice, but listen there’s so much I want to find out; who Don or Ana is and the history of Silver Creek. Wouldn’t you also want to learn that?” Iliana tried.

“I’m not talking about this anymore.”

“Eri—”

“Erik.” Alexander intervened.

“Alexander?”

“I know we are both do not communicate with each other like brothers should, however for the first time I am asking you for this one favor. I, too, am curious.”

Erik felt a smile coming on. “It’s as if we’re not brothers anymore.”

“Erik, we are”

Erik broke a smile that transitioned to a scoff. He felt rest inside of him. He felt an elevation. “Fine. I’ll do it, but I have to come along.”

“Erik, you can’t. We need someone on the surface covering for us. We need you.” Alexander said.

“Okay then.” Erik agreed.
