Confrontation

Emelia watched the second hand on the clock, counting down to the ball. She was anxious and ill-prepared because she still had no definite answer for Leon. The room felt smaller and smaller as she paced, her eyes nervously shifting from the door to her bed. An array of dresses lay there; each was more beautiful than the last. Emelia felt her heart racing as she bit her nails, not knowing what her answer would be.

Emelia jumped at the sound of a sharp rap at her bedroom door and hastily threw on a robe. She ran her fingers through her disheveled hair, sighing in exasperation, as she opened the door to find James standing on the other side. His gaze immediately locked on the evening gowns and satin gloves on the bed. He whipped his head toward Emelia and blurted, “You can’t actually be considering attending the ball with Leon?”

Emelia ran her fingers along the satin and chiffon of the dresses before her, examining each one with keen interest. She paused at one trimmed in delicate lace, then stepped back and shook her head. “I haven’t decided yet,” she said softly.

James grasped her hands tightly, and his eyes narrowed with a hint of jealousy. “Emelia,” he muttered, “You can’t.”

Emelia felt suddenly exposed as she pulled her hands away from his grip and tried to understand what was happening. Her voice cracked slightly when she said, “Why can’t I?”

James shifted his weight from one foot to the other, “Because everyone will think that he’s courting you,” he said in a low voice, “They’ll think that you’re the woman he will marry.”

Emelia had been silent, her eyes fixed on the colorful dresses atop her bed. James was right; she just didn’t want to admit it. It was one of the reasons she hadn’t given Leon an answer yet – her uncertainty about taking that next step. But she could feel James’ eyes waiting for her to agree with him as she weighed her options. Slowly, she dragged her gaze away from the dresses and looked back at James, his gaze unyielding. She had contemplated Leon’s invitation, but the longer she had waited, the more she realized how deep her feelings for him were. Eventually, Emelia couldn’t deny her growing feelings for Leon any longer. After all, she had known Leon almost as long as she had known James.

Another knock rapped at the door, and Emelia willed her feet to the entrance. When she opened it, Leon stood in the doorway, the moonlight glinting off his thick-brown hair and fading into his smile. He extended a hand toward her and spoke slowly, each word measured and deliberate. “I just wanted to check-in. Have you come to a decision?”

Leon felt his grin slipping away as he saw James standing in the middle of Emelia’s chambers. He stepped inside, his eyes wide with surprise. “James,” he said with a million questions running through his mind. What was his friend doing here?

James’ brows furrowed as he bit his lower lip, “She doesn’t want to go,” he said quickly, in a tone that suggested he was ending the conversation.

Leon’s forehead creased as he frowned, “Is that Emelia’s answer or yours?” He stepped forward, his jaw clenched and his arms folded across his chest as he narrowed the gap between him and James.

James crossed his arms and smirked. “If she wanted to go, she would have given you an answer by now,” he said, raising an eyebrow. His expression was taunting and defiant as they stood toe to toe, their chests heaving as they glared at each other, two adversaries about to clash.

“That’s not true,” Emelia’s voice was sharp and loud, cutting through the tense silence that had descended upon the room. Her brown eyes darted back and forth between the two men standing rigidly and wearing matching scowls.

James squared his shoulders and stared at Leon. His expression was of pure smugness. “You know she loves me. You’ll never change that. You’ll always be second fiddle.”

Emelia’s jaw dropped as James finished his assertion. She struggled to compose herself, her nostrils flaring. Was he implying that she would always love him more than Leon? Her voice quivered with indignation as she said, “James, that’s enough.” His statement had completely caught her off guard. He was being ridiculous, acting jealous when he had no right.

James’ face was red, and his hands clenched into fists as he snarled, “No, I am not finished! You couldn’t wait to make your move on Emelia, could you?!” His voice cracked, showing the hurt he felt over his best friend’s betrayal.

Leon took a step forward and towered over James. His voice rumbled like thunder, and his brow furrowed in anger. “You’ve crossed the line. More than once.”

James stood his ground and gritted his teeth. “No, you’re the one-”

Emelia’s eyes met James’, her gaze unflinching. “Leon’s right,” she said, her voice strong and steady, cutting through James’ loud tirade. “You are betrothed to Elizabeth, and you have no right to judge or dictate the bond that is building between Leon and me. You have no right to discuss what will or won’t happen between us.”

He seethed in silence, and his fists clenched tightly at his sides. His face softened as he realized what he had done, and he looked at Emelia with remorse. His gaze shifted to the floor, and he suddenly felt too ashamed to stay any longer. With one final glance, he turned away and slammed the door shut. Emelia remained motionless in shock until she heard Leon’s voice behind her. “You okay?” He asked with worry, placing a gentle hand on her shoulder.

Emelia blinked back tears, her chest heaved in a deep breath, and she nodded. “Yes,” she said quietly, her voice trembling slightly. She gestured towards the door through which James had slammed moments before. “It’s nothing...”

His intense gaze seemed to search her soul as he uttered the question.” Are you sure?” She nodded, and his face lit up with a soft, tender smile. He leaned into her, pressing a gentle kiss to her cheek as he whispered, “I’ll leave and let you get ready.” He walked over to the door and stopped, glancing back at her before delivering his final words, “Please come to the ball tonight, whether it’s with me or not.”

“I will,” Emelia nodded, and Leon opened the door, the sound of it reverberating throughout the room before coming to a stop as it clicked shut. She stared into the empty space, trying to understand why James didn’t appear to be happy for them. Memories of the times they had spent together swirled in her mind, and she could still feel the tenderness in her heart for him, but it was no longer a romantic love. With a long sigh, she moved back to the bed and sat down on it, her eyes drawn to the colorful dresses on the bedspread. What am I going to do?

The ballroom was abuzz with excitement. Royalty and Nobles, dressed in their finest gowns and suits, filled the room. Hundreds of vibrant bouquets of flowers added a regal touch to the space, with the ceiling glimmering with gold filigree and the candelabras draped from gold hooks. James and Elizabeth made their grand entrance and were announced as they entered the ballroom. People congratulated them on their upcoming nuptials everywhere they went, and Elizabeth wore an ear-to-ear smile that never seemed to fade. Trumpeters stood at attention near a towering staircase in the far corner of the room while the band played lively tunes to keep the festive atmosphere going.

Leon stood outside the ballroom, overwhelmed by a cacophony of voices and laughter that spilled out from within. He had gone all out for the occasion, dressed in an understated yet intricate burgundy tuxedo with a gold crown upon his head. His shoulder-length hair was swept back, accentuating his chiseled jawline and intense brown eyes. He wore a simple black tie and immaculate black cufflinks to complete the regal look, while a gold handkerchief in his suit pocket added a touch of color. Suddenly, Simon rushed up to him with a bright smile. “So, is Emelia accompanying you tonight?”

Leon furrowed his eyebrows; his voice was leaden with sadness evident in every word, “I don’t think so.”

Simon stepped forward and gave the King a hearty pat on his back. “My apologies, Your Majesty,” he said, bowing slightly. He moved back a step and met the King’s gaze. “If you are prepared, shall we begin? Are you ready?”

Leon shifted his weight side to side, adjusted his cuffs, took a deep breath, and said, “As ready as I’ll ever be.”

The doors creaked open, and a booming, triumphant march filled the air. The chandeliers quivered, and the guests held their breath in anticipation. The herald announced in a stentorian voice, “NOW PRESENTING, YOUR ROYAL MAJESTY, KING LEON!” Leon stepped into the ballroom and paused at the top of the staircase, his gaze sweeping across the rapt audience. As much as he was showered with admiration from hundreds of onlookers, Leon scanned the room for a single person. The one face he hungered to see.
