Chapter 119

Chapter 119
Serena's POV

I woke up with the chirping of the bird. The sun rays made it difficult for me to open my eyes but my brain was already awake.

I vividly remember the last night. I could still feel Matteo's lips all over me, his arm wrapped around my body protectively.

But I wasn't feeling his warmth.

I blinked multiple times to force my eyes open.

My vision was still blurry when I turned to Matteo's side, expecting him to be there but he wasn't.

The bed was cold and empty.

I rubbed my eyes to clear the vision but nothing changed. I was all alone on the bed.

He wasn't here.

The space beside me was neat as if he removed all the traces of his presence before leaving but he couldn't take away the faint smell of him which still lingered on the sheets.

A soft yawn passed my lips when slowly I sat up. The sheets slipped down to my waist and I shuddered when the coldness hit me hard.

I was naked except the hickeys, Matteo left on my body.

When I reached for the water on the bedside table my gaze flicked to the clock.

11:02 AM.

Eleven.

I had slept that long.

The last night was pleasurable and satisfactory. After a long time, I had a careful sleep but I didn't expect to sleep so long.

My eyes then caught the sight of a folded piece of paper placed neatly on his side of the bed, right where his hand would usually rest. My chest tightened as I reached for it. My fingers trembled when I picked it up and unfolded it.

'I have to leave for my parents' house. Have your meal. Take care'

A small bitter and painful smile spread on my lips.

He didn't mention why he left so early that doesn't mean I won't understand. I know today he is going to marry Violet.

In private.

I closed my eyes and held my breath in the chest. I can't let it hurt me.

He is not mine.

I requested him to be my Matteo last night and he did. Now we are two different individuals.

I let out a sigh, crumbled the note, and threw it in the dustbin while going to the bathroom to freshen up.

Without thinking much, I did my morning routine and get dressed in something casual.

I will leave this house today and then I can start a new life with my baby.

My hand moved down to my stomach. I am having a strong feeling that today is going to be unusually long.

I sighed.

A soft knock on the door grabbed my attention.

"Ma'am I have brought food for you" the maid said from the other side of the door.

I wasn't feeling hungry but for the sake of the baby I had to.

"Come in"

And she did. I gestured her to place the food on the bedside.

"Ma'am, there is some emergency in my home. Can I just go for two hours?" The maid asked.

"Yeah, sure" I said without thinking twice.

She is not a slave, the way Matteo treats her. I can take care of myself and my baby.

"Thank you so much, ma'am. Please don't tell sir about this or he will..."

"Don't worry" I said "Look after your family."

Once she left, I nibbled on the food, had my medicines and walked a few steps.

I was feeling anxious and restless.

The air felt heavier and the room felt smaller. Every tick of the clock scraped against my nerves.

No matter how much I tried, I couldn't shake off the thought that Matteo must be signing his marriage papers.

"Serena! Don't think about him!" I scolded myself.

The person who wanted to separators finally won and we suffered.

My eyes snapped open when suddenly the picture of Kayden came in front of my closed eyes.

His words echoed in my ears, "I will come back soon and this time I won't leave empty-handed handed"

My throat went dry. I ran to the bedside and had a glass of water.

I shouldn't be thinking about him. His aura feels very negative. This isn't good for my baby.

I pressed the glass to my lips again, forcing myself to swallow even though my mouth was already flooded with water.

My chest suddenly became heavier.

Kayden was always so sweet to me that I never get to see the darkness that he carried around him. Maybe, my subconscious mind realised it earlier that's why even after becoming such a good friend of mine I could never feel anything about him in that way.

I placed the empty glass down and wrapped my arms around myself, rubbing my palms over my upper arms.

Stay calm, Serena. For the baby.

I practiced, deep breathing but my mind was running wild. It wasn't ready to calm down.

Now I am forced to think about the situation all over again. Till now, I was thinking his father did all the blunder to get power but now it seems like there is something else to the story.

Something hidden from all of us.

A shiver ran through me.

My intuition was screaming at me. Even if I didn't find anything, I cannot sit here like this. Listening to my intuition, I stood up and slowly made my way out.

It's been 2 days since I last stepped out of the room. After Kayden, I locked myself inside.

I sighed and walked ahead only to be welcome by emptiness and loneliness.

I have never went to his room. He used to spend his day in the living room and evening in the garden. And these were the places where I used to meet him. His room always felt like a sacred place, we are no one was allowed to go, not even servants. He used to clean his room himself.

I let out a deep sigh as I walked more and more towards his room. My mind was completely blank, I was only listening to my intuition.

Once I reached his room, I hesitated for a second before turning the knob and with a soft click it unlocked.

When I stepped inside the room, I found it very messy. It smelled like him. The curtains were drawn halfway, allowing slanted sunlight to cut through the dimness.

Being in his room, only deepened my uneasiness.

My eyes drifted over the bookshelf and the desk. Without wasting anytime, I rushed to his desk. One by one, I checked all the drawers with the hope of finding something.

A sigh of irritation passed my lips. Suddenly the walk in wardrobe started pulling me towards it.

Slowly I walked inside to find his clothes spread everywhere. I rummaged through his clothes but again I couldn't find anything.

The hell!

Just when I thought of leaving his room, my eyes got the sight of a particular why which looked a bit different.

A final line was carved into the wall behind a row of coats. My heart began to pound. I pushed the clothes aside and found a door.

With trembling hands, I pushed it open and what I saw, shocked me to the core...
