Chapter 66 Not an Accident
Luca sat beside them, unusually silent without any objection, which could be taken as agreement with Linus's words.
Olivia looked at Linus's hopeful eyes, feeling a mix of complicated emotions.
After breakfast, Olivia picked up her bag to head out.
"Where are you going?" Luca stood up and asked, his eyes carrying a hint of probing.
"To the hospital for a check-up," Olivia replied flatly, not even looking up.
"I'll drive you." Luca quickly grabbed the car keys, leaving her no chance to refuse.
Olivia frowned, about to decline, but then noticed Luca glancing toward Linus. Linus was smiling at them, clearly delighted to see this. She swallowed her refusal, keeping a cold expression as she followed him.
In the car, Olivia stared at the passing street scenery outside the window. Suddenly, something crossed her mind, and she turned to Luca. "Aren't you going to check on Windy?" Her tone was laced with obvious sarcasm. "It's been a whole night and morning. Your lifesaver might be anxious waiting for you."
Luca's grip on the steering wheel tightened, his jawline tense.
"She's got doctors looking after her. I don't need to go out of my way," he paused, his voice low. "Besides, I promised Grandpa I'd take good care of you."
Olivia let out a scoff and didn't say anything more.
Take care of her? Why hadn't he been this attentive before?
When they reached the hospital, Luca parked the car but didn't turn off the engine right away.
"What exactly is wrong with you?" He turned to stare at Olivia, his eyes full of curiosity. "You keep coming to the hospital for check-ups and never say why."
Olivia's heart skipped a beat, and she avoided his gaze. "It's nothing serious, just routine health maintenance. You should get to work—don't worry about me."
With that, she pushed the car door open and walked quickly into the hospital, not giving Luca a chance to ask more.
In the examination room, Jason carefully checked her over, his frown easing slightly.
"You're recovering well. The baby is stable, and your body is stronger than before," Jason said, handing her the report. "But you still need to watch your emotions. Don't get too worked up, and don't overexert yourself."
Olivia let out a sigh of relief, carefully tucking the report away. "Thank you."
"I'll drive you back. I'm off work now anyway," Jason offered as he packed up his things.
Olivia nodded.
The two walked out of the hospital and headed to the roadside to cross the street. Suddenly, a truck came speeding straight toward Olivia.
"Watch out!" Jason reacted quickly, pulling Olivia behind him.
The truck driver slammed on the brakes, tires screeching against the ground, stopping just in front of them.
"Are you blind or something?" The driver rolled down his window and yelled at Olivia. "Watch where you're going! If you've got a death wish, don't take me with you!"
Olivia's face turned pale as she met the driver's fierce glare, her heart pounding. Just a moment ago, the truck was only a step away from hitting her.
Jason shielded her, his face dark with anger as he shouted at the driver, "Do you even know how to drive? This is a pedestrian crossing!"
The driver grumbled a few more curses, but seeing Jason wasn't backing down, he hit the gas and drove off.
Olivia clutched her chest, taking a while to calm down.
"Are you okay?" Jason asked, looking at her with concern.
Olivia shook her head, but her expression grew heavy.
That truck was going way too fast, and its direction seemed deliberate, not like a simple mistake. Plus, this was a busy city road—how could a truck just appear out of nowhere at such a high speed?
Jason checked her pulse and sighed in relief once he confirmed she was fine. "That driver was ridiculous. There's a whole road, and he aimed right at us..."
"Jason," Olivia cut him off, frowning as she glanced in the direction the truck had gone. "Do you think this might not be an accident at all?"
Jason paused, then realized what she meant, his face darkening. "You mean... someone did this on purpose?"
Olivia nodded. "The truck was far enough away. Even with a blind spot, there's no way he'd head straight for me like that. And when he slammed on the brakes, it didn't look like panic—it looked like he was surprised we got out of the way." A shiver ran through her. "Lately, I haven't had issues with anyone except Windy. Could it really be her? But... how would she even know where I am?"
Jason furrowed his brows, thinking back to the scene, growing more uneasy the more he thought about it.
"Now that you mention it, something does feel off. The truck's direction was too targeted, like it had locked onto you from the start." He looked at Olivia, his expression serious. "And that driver didn't seem scared at all about nearly causing an accident. It felt more like frustration over a failed plan."
Olivia took a deep breath, the unease in her heart growing stronger.
"Windy must be upset that Linus is protecting me and worried I'll come back to the company and threaten her position. That's why she pulled this dirty trick." She clenched her fists. "She already switched my project plans before. Now, just to get rid of me, she's actually willing to hire someone to pull something like this. She's getting more reckless by the day."
Jason patted her shoulder to comfort her. "Don't panic. The most important thing right now is staying safe. Since we've noticed something's wrong, we'll be more cautious from now on." He glanced around. "There are too many people here. Let's get in the car. I'll drive you back."
Jason's car was parked across from the hospital. After they got in, Olivia leaned back in the seat, feeling a cold chill.
If this was really Windy's doing, it was way too ruthless. To achieve her goal, she was willing to go this far. And if she dared to strike once, there could be a second or third time.
She had already stepped back, so why wouldn't Windy just leave her alone?
This made her resignation seem like a joke.
Recalling Linus's words, Olivia narrowed her eyes, quickly making a decision.
She took out her phone and called Melo right away.
Melo sounded thrilled to hear from her. "Olivia, why the sudden call? Are you ready to join us?"
Hearing the excitement in Melo's voice, Olivia sighed, speaking with a hint of apology. "Melo, thank you for the opportunity, but I'm afraid I can't join your company."
Melo didn't seem too surprised, though she was clearly disappointed. "That's a shame. But no matter what happens, I respect your decision. Just know that our company's doors are always open for you."
Olivia felt touched. "Thank you, Melo. Let's meet up another day. I owe you a treat to make up for this."
"Haha, Olivia, we're friends. No need to be so formal."
Olivia hadn't expected Melo to be so understanding. After a bit of small talk, she hung up.
Back at the old family house, Olivia went straight to Linus's bedroom.
Seeing Olivia, Linus asked with concern, "How did the check-up go?"
He wondered why Olivia, who seemed perfectly fine, was in such poor health. Looked like she'd need some proper care from now on.
Olivia gave a faint smile. "Grandpa, don't worry. I'm fine, just need to rest. I came to tell you that I've decided to go back to work at the company."
