Chapter 141 – The Last Bond

Chapter 141 – The Last Bond

Nasir's POV

The abyss roared like a starved beast at its edge where I stood. Shadows clawed at my flesh, cold fingers promising nothingness and yet I did not flinch for the first time in my life. I was not doubtful about what needed to be done as I was ready to take a step in.

At my back Trinity's scream ripped through the cave, tearing me asunder. The bond between us wailed sharp and ruthless, begging me not to do what I had already decided. Her pain whipped through my chest, but that only steeled my resolve.

I had harmed her once, insulted, degraded  and hurt her pride when we were young and I couldn't take that back but I could give my life, soul  and my love for her life.

"Nasir, no!" she screamed, the echo of her footsteps taking up the space as she ran toward me then i turned, meeting her untamed eyes as she was glowing not with fear but with unadulterated power. Light flickered across her skin, blending with darkness in a way I couldn't quite understand. She had been marked by the dark, yes but she wielded it like a sword, not a wound. She was more than I ever permitted myself to imagine she could be and she was mine.

"I told you" I said, voice breaking "I'd be the one to save you"

"Not like this" she sobbed, reaching out her hand. Her fingers brushed mine and, in the touch, the bond erupted so violently I was afraid it would tear the world apart.

The void churned, demanding sacrifice.

I glanced back into her eyes—purple fire and stubborn fury. She wouldn't release me without a fight and truthfully, I didn't wish to leave her, not when I'd just spoken the truth.

I loved her.

The word, unspoken but blazing between us was my damnation and salvation but then something changed.

The connection altered, not pulling me in but binding us together. Her skin's illumination bled into me and my wolf's golden fire in turn flowed into her. We weren't two beings for a moment, we were a single one of one heartbeat, one soul and one wolf.

Trinity's breath hitched with comprehension unfolding in her gaze "It's not one of us" she whispered "It's both of us"

The emptiness shook, its hunger stuttering like it had been punched. Impossible, it spat. The bond will not hold against me.

I almost laughed and for the first time, the darkness did not scare me. It did not have power over me.

I tightened my grip on her hand, keeping her firm, keeping us firm "Do you hear that?" I whispered "It's afraid"

Her lips twisted in a small fierce smile even as tears poured down her face "Then let's see what it looks like when you attempt to rip fated mates asunder" she said

We stood before the abyss together. The bond flared, light and darkness twisting together into something new, something alive. It wasn't power so much as unity. Her pain, my rage, her light, my fire, even her scars and my sins, all of it became a single force.

We stepped forward. Not into the abyss but against it.

The abyss screamed as our bond erupted, pouring into its abyss. Violet fire and golden light poured through its being, exploding it like shattered glass. The ground heaved, rocks exploding as the cave trembled.

The void writhed, trying to retaliate but we held firm and my wolf shrieked within me, hers answering in perfect counterpoint. It was not sacrificing the abyss demanded. It was balance and balance was what we had finally found together.

The cave was radiant with light and there was complete silence for a moment.

The void was gone. The darkness scattered into dust and all that was left were the hollow echoes of what once was the oppressive presence that had choked the air was gone and, in its stead, something I hadn't felt in years.... Hope.

I stumbled, gasping for breath, my knees buckling as Trinity fell with me and her body convulsing against mine as we clutched each other in the wreckage, both too weak to speak but too scared to let go.

Her forehead against mine, her tears mixing with the sweat on my face "You stupid stubborn man" she whispered, her voice raspy but alive "You were really going to leave me" she said

"I thought i had to" I admitted, voice gruff "But then i realized that i can't live without you"

Her laughter was hoarse and beautiful "Good because i wouldn't have let you"

For the first time in years, I let myself laugh too, the sound gruff but freeing.

The cave was collapsing around us but i did not care in as much as we were alive together and that was all that mattered and when we staggered into the night, the air was cool, the moon full and bright and the pack wolves were waiting, their eyes wide in shock and amazement as we staggered out of the wreckage. Murmurs ran through them, words like Alpha, mate and bond.

For once, I didn't feel the weight of their judgment and I didn't feel the shame of my past.

I felt Trinity's hand in mine and it was enough then she turned to me, her eyes glinting in the moonlight "Do you feel it?" she breathed.

"Yes" I said, the word certain definite "The bond doesn't belong to us anymore, it belongs to them too"

The pack as a unit bowed, wolves and humans alike lowering their heads in quiet reverence. I felt their acceptance, their submission to what we had become, not just Alpha and Luna, not just mates but more. A unity forged in darkness and fire, a love that had overcome the void itself.

I lifted Trinity's hand and kissed it, unable to help but smile "Looks like the wolfless girl saved us all"

Her smile was fierce "Looks like the arrogant Alpha finally admitted he was wrong" she said jokingly

The pack laughed, a wave of warmth breaking the stillness and for the first time, their laughter didn't sound like mockery. It sounded like belonging.

I pulled Trinity into my arms, holding her as the moon shone silver on both of us and I had spent years running from this bond, fighting it, hurting her because of my own fear but as I stood there, in the midst of my people, I finally knew the truth.

The bond had never been my curse.

It was my salvation and I wasn't going to let it go. Never again.
