Milk

Tessa and Logan sat at the table eating breakfast with Marissa and Erik. Eliza had been called out in the early morning for an emergency with a patient, and was now sleeping in.

Just about everyday, Logan had fresh milk brought in from town for Tessa. She drank it every meal. It’s a hard business growing two alpha boys. Her little body demanded a lot from her right now. After pouring some milk for Marissa, Tessa sat down and filled her glass. She drank it all in nearly one breath then poured another. Her babies craved it.

Logan was feeding Marissa and tried to get her to take the cup of milk but she kept pushing it away. Then Haldir came bursting through the door. He screamed, “No!” as he slapped the cup from Logan's hand.

Logan stood and growled, “What the fuck is wrong with you Haldir!”

Haldir yelled, “ The milk , it’s poisoned!"

Logan looked at him and his face fell as he looked to Tessa. A trail of blood began pouring from her nose and her eyes glazed over.

“Tessa,” Logan whispered. She wiped her nose and then looked down at her hand and her eyes widened as she saw the blood on her hand.

"Logan."

Just then, Tessa began to shake uncontrollably and slumped over in her chair, hitting her forehead on the table. Haldir ran to her side and pulled her chair back then guided her to the floor as her seizure intensified.

“Erik get Eliza now!” Haldir said calmly. Haldir held Tessa’s hand and said, “ It’s ok baby, it’s ok, it’ll be over soon, just hold on.”

Logan stood there looking at his wife but was frozen. Haldir looked at him and said, “Logan.”

Logan could hear him but he couldn’t respond. All he could do was watch his wife shake violently as blood poured from her eyes, nose and mouth. His heart began to thump in his chest and ears. “Logan!” Haldir yelled this time. Logan blinked and a tear fell from his eye as he finally looked to Haldir. “Logan, hold her head still.”

Logan dropped to his knees and placed both his hands around Tessa’s face as he tried to keep her head from hitting the floor and table.

Logans senses slowly returned to him as he leaned in and kissed Tessa’s head. “Sweetheart, look at me. Tessa,” he pleaded. But, Tessa was completely unresponsive. Her body flailed uncontrollably as her eyes rolled back in her head. Then suddenly her body folded and as quickly as it did that, she arched her back as her arms contracted out to the side with her fists clenched. She stopped breathing.

It seemed like an eternity before Eliza came.

Erik grabbed Marissa from her high chair and stood back out of the way while Eliza tried to help Tessa. He called the ambulance and then texted Jacob and Teddy to tell them what was happening.

Eliza took a box from her healers bag. She took a small tablet from the box and, as Logan held her head still, Eliza placed the tablet in Tessa’s mouth along her cheek.

Teddy and Jacob had arrived by this time and came running into the dining room.

“Jesus what’s happening to her ?” Jacob asked as he ran his hands through his hair and tears filled his eyes.

Haldir looked up and said, “She’s been poisoned Jacob.”

Teddy knelt beside Logan and asked, “How?”

“The milk,” said Haldir.

Tessa counted the seconds on her watch, Tessa was beginning to turn blue. Eliza put another tablet in Tessa’s mouth.

Within a few seconds, Tessa’s shaking slowed and she suddenly began gasping for air. “Now slowly boys, turn her on her left side,” Eliza said as she crawled back to let them move Tessa.

The medics came into the room with a stretcher and then went to Tessa to assess her. After she had completely stopped seizing, they placed Tessa on the stretcher and then wheeled her to the ambulance with Logan and Eliza following close behind.

Logan climbed in with Tessa, took her hand and kissed it then wiped the blood soaked hair from her face.

After getting to the infirmary, Eliza evaluated Tessa while Logan sat beside her and kissed her hand. Tessa was still unresponsive. The nurse came in and gave Eliza some lab reports. Eliza sat down in a chair beside Logan and looked over everything then put the papers down and sighed.

“Logan, you have an important decision to make and there isn’t much time.”

The family sat in the waiting room for an update from Eliza. It had been nearly two hours since they arrived and every second that passed made everyone more on edge. Teddy and Tessa have had a telepathic bond since childhood, but he couldn’t reach his sister. He knew whatever was happening, Tessa was in serious danger.

“Why would someone poison Momma?” Erik asked as he sat with his head in his hands. Teddy put his hand on Erik’s shoulder and rubbed it. “ I don’t know buddy.”

Jacob leaned against a window and stared out across the landscape. He spoke up, “It’s because of me. Momma told me there’d be a price to pay for what I did to Lorena. Those fucking witches did this to her.”

Haldir leaned against the wall beside Jacob. “ Your mother, Teddy and Eliza are one of those fucking witches Jacob. Have some goddamned respect.”

“You know what I’m saying Haldir. Billy sat there and told us all was forgiven. That fucking lying bastard.”

“You don’t even know they had anything to do with it Jacob. Your parents have pissed a lot of people off over the years. It could be any fucking body.”

“Just a coincidence that it happens right now then?” asked Jacob sarcastically.

Teddy spoke up, “ Jacob if you want to feel sorry for yourself, it’s not the damn time.”

Jacob turned around and glared at Teddy. “Sorry for myself? What the fuck are you talking about?”

Teddy stood up. He looked a lot like Tessa right now when she was angry. His hair blew like he had his own personal breeze. His green eyes swirled. The room heated. He tried hard to suppress his anger and worry as he said, “We don’t know a goddamned thing yet Jacob. Nothing. If the Order has anything to do with this, believe me, I will fucking crush them. But it doesn’t matter right now. It’s not about you or your guilt, it’s about your mother. Now sit the fuck down and shut your mouth. Nobody wants to hear this shit right now.”

Jacob growled low in his chest as he stood there unflinchingly, as did Teddy. Teddy had been around long enough now to know how to deal with wolves. He and Logan had been toe to toe several times over the years. This wasn't a time where he could just back away from his nephew and let him think he'd won. Teddy was the beta. He could allow some young wolf to challenge him, not even if it was Jacob.

Just then, Eliza walked through the door.
