Chapter 30
Chapter 30
They spent the rest of the day sprawled out on the couch, half watching a mindless television series and half napping. Their bodies had been pushed to the point of utter exhaustion, and they needed a day to recover from the excesses. For the first time since their mating mark had appeared, none of them felt a spark of interest in carnal interactions. Not because their bond had weakened, the opposite had happened. She could almost constantly hear a stream of half-conscious thoughts passing between them and she knew once they were out of the mind fuddled state the huge doses of endorphins, they had been indulging in wore off they'd all have to work on some sort of mental blocks to preserve their sanity. It wasn't intrusive but how could anyone hear their own thoughts when the thoughts of two other people were constantly wandering around in their heads? They had indulged their new link to each other so much that their hunger for her and her for them had settled into something that could be functioned around.
She had previously made fun of the wolves that disappeared with their mates for a few weeks when they first were marked. She finally understood why they did that. There would have been no possible way that she could have been able to function in her normal life when they first marked her. Sleepily she held her right hand up and examined their mate mark. The mark had two tiny paw prints that were entwined with a third, larger one. Behind the paws was the shape of a moon that was a few shades lighter than the paws. She'd never seen a mate mark that looked like their marks. All three of them were identical and placed in the same exact spot on their hands. But, then again, it had been generations since there was a triple mating. It made her nervous because their legends said the triple mating only occurred when the packs were on the brink of a war that would make them extinct. They thought they knew what the cause was but at the same time how could they prevent something that hadn't happened yet? If they acted without clear evidence, they could spark the war that they were trying to prevent.
"We could just use the legends to our advantage and see if the packs will follow us without a fuss." Jarold said out loud, clearly having her thoughts swimming in his head.
"Ooooh Lord this is going to be annoying fast." She groaned covering her face with her hands.
"What? If you don't want us listening to your thoughts, then don't project them to us." Toby said with a laugh.
"How do I stop it from happening? It isn't like I'm used to having a mental link with someone like you two are." She asked shifting to glare at her mates.
"It's hard to explain how to stop doing it." Jarold said with a sigh. "I mainly imagine the link between Toby and I as a door and I just picture the door closed when I don't want to talk to him through the link."
"I pretend there is a wall around my thoughts and I only let the ones I want to share through the wall." Toby said with a shrug. "You just got to figure out what will work for you and practice. When we were kids, we drove each other crazy because we never knew what thoughts ours were and which were our brother's."
"Ah so that explains why you're both so nuts now. Been working on that for your whole lives." She said and laughed at their glowers. "Whether or not we're nuts you're still stuck with us. And I hear its genetic, so you better hope we're not nuts."
"Whatever!" She said and rolled her eyes at them while she sat up and propped herself up against the back of the couch more comfortably. "Am I the only one worried about how things are going to go?"
"No, you're not the only one. But we can only fix a problem once it is presented. For the moment, everyone is more focused on the novelty of our mating than what the implications for it are. Next thing is they're going to be watching you closely for signs of pregnancy. Because it would be very unusual for you to not have a successful first heat with two mates." Jarold said seriously.
"Do you want me to be pregnant?" She asked them raising an eyebrow.
"I think the Goddess is in control of that. Whether you are or not makes no difference to us or our situation. I don't think any of us are prepared for pups right now, but that will be how it is until they're coming. We'll love and protect them rather they're already growing or it takes a few heat cycles to start them." Toby said with a shrug. "I think I can speak for Jarold when I say we're happy either way."
"I aspire to that level of unbothered. I'm freaking out over the possibility." She said, looking down at her lap and giving a long sigh.
"Do you want to be pregnant?" Toby asked as he sat up and put a hand on her thigh and gave a gentle squeeze.
"Well, its like you said. We're not ready to have pups right now. With everything so up in the air and knowing there is probably a war brewing. It would be the worst possible time for me to get pregnant." She said looking up to meet his eyes.
"Well, that settles it." Jarold said with a resigned sigh as he slapped his hands on his thighs and stood up. "You're definitely knocked up. Goddess knows that pups come at the most inconvenient time."
His statement was so unexpected that they all busted out laughing and Kathrine threw one of the throw pillows at his head but missed when he ducked out of the way. Jarold swooped down and snatched Kathrine up and threw her over his shoulder making her squeal and swat his back and ass.
"Put me down you beast!" She screeched as she was carried in the direction of the back door.
"I feel all of our wolves getting twitchy and its putting all of us on edge. They've been cooped up inside all week long with us being otherwise occupied. They need a run and our heads need cleared." Jarold announced as he finally put Kathrine down in the grass.
Within a few seconds they had shed their clothes and shifted into their wolf forms. Kathrine shook her fur out and chuffed at them before she spun and took off at a run for the trees lining their property. The moment her paws were flying through the grass she felt the weight on her shoulders fall off and her head clear to the point that she could think around the fears of the future. Her mate was right; she definitely needed a good run.
