Chapter 75 The Walls Close In
Selene
The discharge papers feel heavier than they should.
A few sheets of white paper, stapled together, tucked into a manila folder. But in my hands, they feel like lead.
John wheels me out of the hospital even though I swore I could walk. Adrian walks alongside, his hand hovering near mine as if afraid to let go. Kostas trails behind with the overnight bag and the flowers we were too heartbroken to throw away.
No one talks.
We’re all just… existing. Breathing. Grieving.
I stare at the hospital doors as they slide open, trying to brace myself for the outside world. But nothing prepares you for the moment you leave the place where your life changed forever.
I lost them.
And now I have to learn how to live with that.
The car ride is silent. Adrian drives. John sits beside him, jaw clenched and eyes locked on the road like he’s daring it to move wrong. Kostas sits in the back next to me, his hand wrapped around mine like an anchor.
When we finally pull into the driveway, the house looks the same—but I’m not.
My body aches. My soul aches. But I make myself get out of the car, refusing help, even as my knees threaten to buckle. I want to walk through that door on my own.
Inside, everything is quiet. Clean. Familiar.
Too familiar.
The couch we curled up on after ultrasounds. The kitchen where Adrian made me ginger tea when the nausea was bad. The hallway where I used to stand, wondering how on earth I’d gotten so lucky.
Now it all feels haunted.
I lower myself onto the couch, arms crossed protectively over my stomach. Adrian kneels in front of me, eyes searching mine. “Do you want water? Food? I’ll make anything—”
“I just want to sit,” I whisper.
He nods. “Okay.”
John disappears into the kitchen. Kostas takes the seat beside me, not saying anything—just keeping his hand on my thigh, grounding me.
A few minutes later, there’s a knock at the door.
Adrian stiffens.
“I’ve got it,” John says, already walking toward the front.
I hear voices. Low. Tense.
Then footsteps.
Jonathan enters first, dressed in a sharp navy blazer, flanked by two uniformed police officers and a plainclothes detective. He nods at me gently, eyes full of something that feels like sorrow and rage all at once.
“Selene,” he says softly. “You up for a few questions?”
I nod. Barely. “Yeah.”
One of the officers steps forward, offering a sympathetic smile. “We’ll keep this short Miss. I promise. But the sooner we get your statement, the better.”
Adrian is already standing beside me, fists clenched. “She’s barely been home for an hour.”
Jonathan holds up a calming hand. “We’re not here to pressure her. But the footage from the hospital is confirmed. It was an attack. We’ve got the moment she was pushed. We just need any details Selene might remember.”
My skin goes cold.
The stairs. The fall. The scream.
“I didn’t see her face,” I say, voice hoarse. “I was walking back from the bathroom. Someone was waiting just around the corner—she grabbed me and shoved. It happened fast. I didn’t have time to react.”
“Did she say anything? Anything that might help?” the detective asks gently.
I close my eyes, searching the moment like sifting through broken glass.
“There was perfume,” I say. “Floral. Expensive. The kind that lingers.”
Adrian’s jaw tightens.
“She came up behind me ” I never saw her face."
“So what is happening ? Have they brought her in yet?” John asks.
“It is her , the footage confirms it. ” Jonathan says, “she’s already gone.”
“What makes you say that?” Kostas asks, dark eyes narrowing.
“Her hotel room was cleared out within an hour of Selene’s fall. She checked out and was seen at the airport. We’re confirming the manifests now. And the Uber driver tells us she was checking in to an Air France flight. ”
I exhale shakily. “She knew she’d get caught.”
Jonathan nods. “She ran.”
The officer closes his notebook. “That’s all we need for now, Miss. We’ll be in touch soon. And… I’m very sorry for your loss.”
I nod, not trusting myself to speak.
He leave quietly.
The door shuts.
And the silence in the room is deafening.
“She ran,” Adrian mutters. “Coward.”
“She’s not going to get away with this,” John says, voice sharp. “Not this time.”
“She won’t,” Jonathan replies. “I’ll make sure of it.”
Kostas rises, stepping into the hallway. “I’ll call a friend. He has ties in France.”
Jonathan lifts a brow. “She didn’t just run. She fled the country. First-class ticket. Paris..”
“I didn’t see her face,” I whisper again. “But I know that sickening perfume and I feel it.”
Adrian kneels beside me again, tears brimming in his eyes. “I swear to you, Selene—we will find her.”
John nods from across the room, voice firm. “And when we do… she won’t touch you again.I think it's time she realizes exactly who she is fucking with."
