Chapter 11 Jennifer was Singing
Jennifer's voice came through the phone, soft and gentle as if waking from a dream.
The gentle voice, not too sweet, seemed to cleanse the tense atmosphere.
Michael's hand tightened on the phone, involuntarily imagining Jennifer just waking up.
Was her angelic face still as rosy as an apple?
Michael's voice unconsciously grew deeper, only replying, "It’s Michael."
"Mr. Whitfield?"
Upon hearing these words, it was like a thunderbolt, startling Jennifer awake from her sleep.
Why would Michael call her at this time?
Was he warning her again about today's incident?
He was quite persistent.
"Yes."
Just as Jennifer was cursing in her heart, she heard the deep, lazy voice of Michael on the phone.
Jennifer was speechless and thought, “What did he mean?”
She was puzzled and asked, "Mr. Whitfield, do you have something to tell me?"
She couldn't guess Michael's intentions.
The address of “Mr. Whitfield” made Michael furrow his brow.
Wasn't she speaking to William with a smile before? Why did she seem so distant now?
Feeling a bit sad, his voice deepened, "William wants to talk to you."
Without waiting for Jennifer's reaction, he directly handed the phone to William.
William wanted to talk to her?
Jennifer on the phone was still shocked, and then heard an urgent call, "Beautiful lady."
The voice was eager and excited.
It instantly lit up the quiet night.
Jennifer was surprised and unexpected, "William, why are you still not sleeping so late?"
"I'm thinking of you, and I don't want to sleep," William whispered.
Even through the phone, she could imagine his dejected and aggrieved look, which was so heart-wrenching.
Jennifer's lonely heart was suddenly stirred up.
She gently comforted, "I miss you too."
Although she said so, the warning from Michael was still echoing in her ears. Jennifer suppressed her inner turmoil and took the initiative to speak, "William, it's already very late, so you should go to sleep."
"No."
William rejected it without hesitation because he didn't want to hang up the phone at all.
He wanted to keep talking to Jennifer.
Jennifer was amused by William's domineering attitude, "How about I sing you a rhyme to help you sleep?"
Jennifer realized that William must have threatened not to sleep in order for Michael to call her.
Michael had misunderstood her several times already, so she had to be rational.
Perhaps it was only because she had saved William, and that was why he depended on her like this.
After a few days, the fearful emotions would fade away, and things would go back to normal.
Thinking of this, Jennifer couldn't help but feel a bit down.
The happiness that had just been shown was gradually disappearing.
William still maintained excitement because he could listen to Jennifer's song to fall asleep, and immediately obediently lie down.
Michael, who had been listening attentively, raised an eyebrow in surprise. Jennifer wanted to sing?
For some reason, he was curious.
He wondered if her singing voice was as gentle as her speech.
As he pondered, a voice singing came through the phone.
"Little rabbit, open the door..."
The singing voice flowed like a stream.
Michael was slightly surprised, and he didn't expect that a simple nursery rhyme could sound so fair-sounding when sung by Jennifer.
Even more strangely, before the song was finished, the previously restless William had fallen asleep.
Indeed, Jennifer left a deep impression on William's heart.
Michael quickly picked up the phone, his voice deep as he said, "William is asleep."
The call abruptly cut off.
Jennifer felt empty inside, unable to sleep any longer.
She missed her child so much.
