Chapter 68
Rosalie's POV
My breath hitched as I reread Maverick's message, my fingers trembling around my phone.
Maverick: I didn't get to finish, but you need to know-Maya, Cameron's ex-girlfriend was your sister who died many years ago.
The words blurred before my eyes.
Sister.
No.
It wasn't possible.
Maya had been Cameron's ex who died, and we never know what killed my sister as well so this is it. But Maverick was telling me that Cameron's ex was my sister? That my own blood had been tied to Cameron in a way I had never imagined?
The restroom around me felt too small, too suffocating. My chest tightened as my mind struggled to process this truth.
"Rosalie?"
Cameron's voice dragged me back, his breath warm against my skin. I had forgotten he was still there, still caging me against the wall. His piercing eyes studied me, his smirk now replaced by something unreadable.
I clenched my phone in my fist, rage bubbling beneath my skin like lava.
"You knew," I whispered, my voice dangerously low.
Cameron tilted his head slightly. "Knew what?"
I snapped my head up, my gaze burning into his. "That Maya was my sister!"
A flicker of surprise crossed his features, but it was gone in an instant, replaced by that infuriatingly composed expression he always wore.
"You didn't know?" he asked, his tone unreadable.
My blood boiled.
"You knew," I repeated, my voice shaking. "You knew and you didn't say anything! You let me-" My throat tightened, emotions clashing violently inside me.
No wonder, whenever I asked about his ex, he always gets angry so this is the reason, it's because Maya is my sister.
Cameron exhaled slowly as if choosing his next words carefully.
"It wouldn't have changed anything," he said finally.
Something inside me snapped.
"It would have changed EVERYTHING!" I shoved against his chest with all my strength, forcing him to take a step back. My heart was hammering against my ribs, the weight of this revelation suffocating.
Cameron's jaw tightened, his eyes darkening. "You think knowing would've made it easier? It wouldn't have brought her back, Rosalie."
I flinched at his words. He said that as if it still hurt him. As if he still carried the weight of her death.
"What happened to her?" I demanded, my voice raw. "Tell me the truth, Cameron. No more games. No more secrets. What happened to Maya?"
He didn't answer right away. Instead, he ran a hand through his hair, exhaling sharply. "You don't want to know."
That only made me angrier.
"I have the right to know," I hissed. "She was my sister!"
Cameron's eyes met mine again, and for the first time, I saw something in them that I wasn't used to seeing.
Guilt.
Pain.
Regret.
"She didn't just die, did she?" I whispered, horror creeping into my voice.
Cameron's silence was answer enough.
My heart plummeted.
"Tell me," I demanded.
Cameron finally spoke, his voice lower than before. "She was murdered."
The air was knocked out of my lungs.
Murdered.
No. No. No.
I staggered back, gripping the sink behind me to keep myself steady. My vision swam as the word echoed in my mind.
Maverick said Cameron's family had hurt my family before. Was this what he meant?
"Who?" My voice was barely above a whisper. "Who killed her?"
Cameron hesitated.
His silence sent a fresh wave of nausea through me.
"Cameron," I said sharply, forcing him to look at me. "Who killed Maya?"
His lips parted, but before he could answer, the restroom door burst open.
I flinched as Olivia stormed inside, her heels clicking sharply against the floor. Her eyes locked onto me, and for a brief second, I saw nothing but pure venom in her gaze.
Then she saw Cameron standing close to me, and her expression twisted even more.
"Unbelievable," she spat. "So this is where you ran off to? Sneaking around in restrooms now?"
I barely heard her. My mind was still reeling from the bombshell Cameron had just dropped.
Maya was my sister.
She had been murdered.
And Cameron knew who did it.
I turned back to him, my pulse pounding in my ears. "We're not done," I said through clenched teeth.
Then, without another word, I pushed past Olivia and stormed out of the restroom.
I needed to breathe.
I needed answers.
And I was going to get them-no matter what it took.
***
I barely made it down the hallway before my phone buzzed again. Another message from Maverick.
Maverick: Meet me outside. I have more to tell you. And Rosalie… don't trust Cameron.
My stomach twisted.
I quickened my pace, heading for the exit. The cool night air hit me the moment I stepped outside, but it did little to soothe the storm raging inside me.
Maverick was already there, leaning against his car, his expression unreadable. As soon as he saw me, he pushed off the vehicle and walked toward me.
"You okay?" he asked.
I let out a shaky breath. "No."
He nodded as if he expected that answer. "I figured."
"Maverick, just tell me the rest," I said, my voice urgent. "What do you know?"
He hesitated for only a moment before speaking.
"Cameron's family is responsible for Maya's death."
The words sliced through me like a blade.
My chest tightened, my breath coming out in short gasps.
"His family?" I repeated numbly.
Maverick nodded. "His father, to be specific. And Cameron covered it up."
A cold chill ran through my body.
No.
No, it couldn't be.
Cameron… knew?
He had protected the people who had murdered my sister?
My hands curled into fists. My entire body shook with rage.
Cameron had played me.
He had been lying this entire time.
"Rosalie," Maverick said, his voice softer now. "I told you not to trust him."
But I already knew.
Cameron wasn't just my enemy.
He was the reason my sister was dead.
And I was going to make him pay.
