Chapter 162

Chapter 162

"Abigail, you're finally off work."

Watching him walk toward her, Abigail smiled and nodded.

"What are you doing here?"

Thinking Kevin might not be feeling well, she asked, "How's the wound healing?"

Kevin's eyes lit up seeing her care about him.

"The surgery you did was very precise. The wound has healed up nicely. I came today specifically to thank you and take you out for a meal."

Kevin came right out with his reason for being there, but Abigail's face showed a hint of apology.

"I'm sorry, it's not really convenient for me."

As a married woman, she naturally couldn't go out to eat alone with another man.

"What's wrong? Do you still have things to take care of?"

Abigail shook her head.

"No, I'm pretty much done for the day. It's just that I don't want to make him jealous."

"Jealous?"

Kevin immediately sensed something was off, and his heart sank.

"Who would be jealous? I'm just trying to thank my doctor."

He tried to brush past the topic.

But Abigail didn't play along.

"Trent! You have no idea, he gets jealous so easily."

As she said it, the corners of her lips curved into a small smile.

Seeing that look on Abigail's face, Kevin's heart sank even further.

But he didn't dare show it. He kept his tone casual and asked, "Weren't you two about to get divorced? Why would he still get jealous?"

That sparked Abigail's interest in sharing.

"I came back this time hoping to finalize the divorce, but I found that he's different from what I expected."

She paused for a moment, then gave Kevin an apologetic smile instead of going on.

"Long story short, we've made up."

"Made up?"

Kevin repeated it in disbelief.

Abigail had seemed so cold toward Trent before. How did they patch things up so suddenly?

"Yeah, so as a married woman, I need to keep an appropriate distance from other men. I don't want him to get the wrong idea or feel jealous."

Abigail said it with a light laugh, completely unaware that Kevin had gone completely rigid.

"How did you two make up? Before you were clearly..."

Kevin didn't finish before Abigail cut him off.

The smile on her face faded. She glanced around, then said, keeping a polite distance between them, "It's kind of a long story. Why don't we find a café and talk?"

Just moments ago, Kevin had looked like he was ready to go after Trent right then and there, and Abigail didn't want anyone to see that, especially her colleagues.

She had nothing to hide, but if certain rumors reached Trent's ears, it could easily put a strain on their relationship.

Kevin took a deep breath and, seeing how serious Abigail looked, gave a slow nod. But his face stayed dark the whole time, and it was hard to tell what was going through his mind.

At the café, the server placed two fresh cups of coffee in front of Abigail and Kevin.

Abigail took a small sip. Kevin just held his cup with no interest in drinking.

"Abigail, how could you get back together with him? After everything he put you through, doesn't any of it bother you?"

Kevin's brow was furrowed tight, and the look he gave her was full of disbelief.

He genuinely couldn't understand how Abigail could have fallen for Trent again after what he'd done.

Abigail stayed quiet for so long that Kevin thought she wasn't going to answer at all, so he pressed on.

"Abigail, if you ask me, you shouldn't go back to him. Sure, some of the problems in your marriage may be sorted out for now, but that doesn't make him someone you can trust."

Kevin meant every word. He was truly thinking about what was best for her.

He had seen how much she'd been hurt, and he knew how deep those wounds went.

If he could, Kevin really didn't want Abigail to forgive Trent. Even if that meant she'd end up with someone other than him.

Abigail looked quietly at Kevin, then glanced down at her coffee, not quite sure what to say.

After choosing her words carefully, she finally spoke. "It's not as simple as you think. Yes, he made mistakes before, but he's changed."

And on top of that, there was Paxton.

If she could help it, Abigail didn't want her child growing up in a single-parent home.

Both Trent and Paxton had changed in so many ways.

With everything moving in a better direction, Abigail felt they all deserved another chance.

She didn't need to spell all of that out for Kevin, of course.

"The point is, things are good right now. I want to give him a chance, and myself one too."

Meeting Abigail's steady gaze, Kevin's grip on his coffee cup tightened.

"Abigail, are you serious?"

Abigail nodded firmly. "I have no reason to lie to you."

This time, it was Kevin who went quiet.

He could see how set she was on this.

But he just couldn't accept it.

Why was Abigail willing to give Trent another shot but not even consider him?

Was he not good enough?

Seeming to notice his low mood, Abigail took a moment to find the right words, then asked carefully, "Kevin, do you have feelings for me?"

The moment the words left her mouth, Kevin's grip on his cup loosened.

He hadn't expected her to be so direct.

But could he deny it?

No, he couldn't.

He had developed real feelings for Abigail, and he had hoped they might have a future together. He just hadn't found the right moment to tell her, and Trent had gotten there first.

Now that the moment was here, he wasn't going to hold back.

Meeting Abigail's sincere gaze, Kevin nodded and owned up to it without hesitation.

"Was it that obvious?"

Seeing the slightly pained look on his face, Abigail gave a soft laugh and nodded.

But her smile quickly faded, replaced by a serious expression.

"Kevin, I really appreciate your feelings, but I can't accept them."

Abigail didn't beat around the bush. She drew the line clearly.

"I'm not looking to complicate things emotionally right now. And my decision to get back together with Trent wasn't made lightly."

"Things can work out, or they can fall apart again."

The words came out of Kevin almost before he could stop them.

The look on his face showed he meant it from the heart, not as a spur-of-the-moment comment.
