Chapter 15 My answer is Yes!
Chapter 15 My answer is Yes!
Scarlette’s POV
I looked at Rick… Really looked.
What if he sent someone to pass the note for him just to make sure I didn’t suspect he was the one behind it.
The message still left me a little disturbed, but as an Alpha, I’d learnt that people would always find ways to get attention or even get us threatened, only to see our reactions.
Well… I’m not the Scarlette of old. I don’t panic for trivial reasons as such.
Still looking at Rick, I crumpled the paper and dumped it in the nearest trash can.
He saw me, but instead of giving a shocked or disturbed expression, he just looked at me with those curious eyes.
Hmmm… Who then could it be?
I honestly wanted to ignore it, but this pack and the memories surrounding it made it almost too hard. Nevertheless, I acted cool, knowing fully well that I could stand up for myself if anything dared to happen.
“You sure everything is fine?” Kael said lightly through a mindlink.
Instead of saying my reply, I nodded, my eyes still scanning the area.
Once the engineer was done with his presentation, my eyes moved to Rick once again before they finally landed on Alpha Azrael who some what didn’t notice I was looking at him the whole time. It used to be the other way round, What’s wrong with me?
As we retreated to go and discuss how Tomorrow would be, my phone buzzed.
“Hey old man!” I said with a cheerful voice.
It was really a thing of joy to have him back on his feet, even though he wasn’t as agile as before.
“I was just calling cause I missed you,” his words were accompanied by a laugh. I laughed too, almost too loud.
We both knew that was a lie, or at least, it was just a way to tease me. Cyrus never just called cause he missed me.
“What’s up?” I asked, switching to a serious tone. “I hope you’ve had your meal and taken your drugs.”
“Of course, what other choice do I have?”
We paused for a while.
“So…” I dragged, urging him to talk.
“I just wanted to know how things were going over there?” The joy in his voice dropped, though not totally. “And I wanted to know if you were coming back today, cause it’s getting late.”
“I hope there’s no problem?” I asked quickly, still reliving the trauma of the last time.
“Calm down, Child… It’s nothing.” He reassured me. “Why do you make it feel like I don’t care about you. I mean, can’t I just call to check up on you?” He said, causing me momentary relief.
“You sound like you’re really missing me,” I said with a smile. “Anyways, I’ll be back this night. We’ll be just a little late.”
“A little?” He asked, not falling for it.
“Okay… Maybe a little more than little.” Cyrus burst into laughter and I followed.
“I almost forgot.” He said, cutting through our laughter. “When do you intend to reply to these Alpha’s? I mean… These gifts keep coming in every minute.”
I frowned. “More are coming in?”
“Your office is filled with them,” he says with a laugh. I didn’t even know whether to believe him or not.
“Did I commit a crime by being the only female Alpha?”
“No my dear,” came Cyrus’ reply. “I think your offense was being beautiful, brave and extremely strong.” I smiled, a little too much.
“I don’t even know if I’m going for the Gala yet. Talk less of knowing the partner to pick.”
“Take your time, child.” Cyrus said, his voice a little calmer.
I nodded, even though I knew he couldn’t see me. “I will.”
With that, I went ahead to end the call.
I let out a heavy sigh, a smile still spread across my lips as I tucked the phone into my pocket.
I can’t even explain how grateful I am to the goddess for not taking Cyrus away from me. And then, the meeting with Alan, it wasn’t as I envisioned it at all. Turns out he was just curious to finally see the Alpha Lani whose praises Cyrus never ceased to sing.
As we walked back to the meeting room, my Beta and guards by my side with people bowing every now and then. I heard that familiar voice in my head.
“Can we talk?”
“In private.”
Is he about to reveal that he’s the one that sent the letter?
I turned to Kael and the guards. “You all go ahead, I’ll catch up with you.”
Kael looked at me strangely, “You’re acting strange. Is there a problem, your majesty?”
“It’s nothing, just do as I say.”
He let out a sigh and then nodded.
“I’ll be around, just incase you need me.”
I didn’t reply, just waited for Rick to come out of wherever he was hiding. “What do you want?” I said as he approached me.
He smirked, like he had been waiting his lifetime for this moment. “Scarlette!” he called, as if trying to remind me of the past.
“Lani… Alpha Lani!” I corrected once again. “That’s whom I am to you!”
His eyes crinkled at the corners as he smiled, stepping closer. I set my hand out, insisting on the distance to be observed.
“You don’t have to put up an act anymore,” he said, sounding too cocky for my liking.
I rolled my eyes at him. “What do you want?” I said, my tone anything but pleasant.
“I saw the way you were looking at me back there.” He said with a smile. “Honestly, I thought ten years was too long to still harbor a crush, but I was really surprised when you couldn’t take your eyes off me.”
I could no longer mask the disgust on my face.
“Well… I just realised that you’re still too shy to ask for what you want, so I’m going to make things easy for you.”
“My answer is Yes!”
I frowned, “What the fuck are you talking about?”
“Don’t act like you don’t know what I’m talking about.” He continued. “I know you need a date for the Alpha’s Gala, but you’re too shy to ask.”
I burst into laughter. Trust me, I tried to stop myself, but it came out really loud and mocking.
“Me? Ask you to the Gala?” Another round of laughter began.
“Even your Alpha doesn’t stand a chance.” I said, turning to continue moving.
Just then, my eyes met his.
Alpha Azrael?
