Chapter 397 Are You Sure You Want to Pursue the Truth?
Ever since Leroy had discovered them, it was like he could see right through their plans. He kept glancing their way, his eyes full of warning.
As the event was wrapping up, Isabella took a chance when Leroy wasn't looking and slipped backstage.
Before she could get far, Leroy cut her off at the corner.
Looking at her seriously, Leroy said, "Isabella, I know what you guys are up to. This has nothing to do with Courtney. She's just a kid. If you have issues, come to me. Don't drag her into this."
Isabella quickly explained, "Dr. Runyon, you've got it all wrong. We don't want to involve her. We just want to..."
"Leroy."
Courtney walked over with a smile before Isabella could finish.
Leroy gently patted Courtney's head and said warmly, "Courtney, you did great today. I recorded the whole thing. We'll show it to dad and stepmom when we get home. They'll be so proud of you."
"Don't show it to Dad. He promised he'd come to my event but didn't. I'm not talking to him anymore." Courtney pouted.
Leroy chuckled, "What, you're not happy I came?"
"Of course, I'm happy, Leroy. Don't be mad. I just wish Dad had come too, but I'm glad you came. You should come next time too." Courtney said, hugging his arm and speaking sweetly.
Soon, she noticed Isabella. "Leroy, this lady is so pretty. Is she my future sister-in-law?"
"She's a friend of mine," Leroy replied.
He didn't deny Isabella's "sister-in-law" status. Indeed, Isabella was her sister-in-law, but it had nothing to do with him.
"She's my wife," Michael said, walking over after noticing Leroy.
"Leroy, is this gentleman your friend too? He's so handsome, but he looks kind of familiar." Courtney whispered to Leroy.
Hearing this, Leroy glanced at Michael and quickly said, "You're the little hostess today. You must have other things to do. Go take care of them. I'll talk to them and catch up with you later."
Courtney nodded and politely greeted Michael and Isabella, "Hello, sir. Hello, ma'am."
Then she waved and left.
"She's very polite." Isabella remarked.
Leroy said proudly, "She's a very well-behaved and kind girl."
"Since you know our purpose, please find a way for me to get a test done to confirm my relationship with Mrs. Runyon." Michael said.
Leroy's face turned grim as he looked at Michael seriously, "Things are already like this. Are you sure you want to pursue the truth? If my stepmother hasn't lost her memory, or if she has, what difference does it make? Courtney is already fifteen. Do you want to tell her the truth and make her lose her mother like you did?"
"Knowing the truth won't make her lose her mother. She's fifteen, old enough to handle the truth." Michael replied indifferently.
Leroy sternly refused, "Sorry, I can't help you. I'm not interested in the truth. I only care about my sister's well-being. I won't let anyone hurt her for any reason. She's your sister too. You saw how sweet and kind she is. Can you really..."
"Leroy, my teacher wants you to come over." Courtney interrupted, running over and panting.
Leroy immediately put on a gentle smile, "Okay, I'll be right there."
He then lowered his voice and warned Michael, "I won't tell my father about this. You better watch yourself."
Isabella awkwardly asked, "What now? He doesn't want us to contact Courtney. He'll definitely keep a close watch."
"We'll find another chance. He can't guard her forever." Michael replied coldly.
He needed to confirm Milan's wife's identity before taking the next step. Otherwise, if Milan's wife wasn't Rowan, all this effort would be for nothing.
After the event, they took the little boy to a restaurant for dinner before his parents picked him up.
Watching the boy's indifferent attitude towards his parents, Isabella touched her belly and smiled, "Do you think our child will be this difficult when they're his age?"
"He better not!" Michael huffed.
Thinking about the noisy kids at the school today, like a hundred sparrows chattering away, he thought if he were the principal, he'd send them all home.
"Michael, you can't be harsh with kids. They're so adorable. I envy them. Such a bright school with so many activities. I didn't have that many fun things when I was in school. It was all studying." Isabella said wistfully.
Michael held her hand tenderly, "If you want to continue studying, you can go back to school after the baby is born."
Remembering how hard she had worked to escape poverty through education, Isabella nodded, "Okay, I'll definitely go back to school if I get the chance. Michael, wait for me. I need to use the restroom."
As the baby grew inside her, every movement brought a physical reaction. This time, it pressed on her bladder, making her urgently need to go.
Isabella hurried to the restroom, and Michael quickly called their bodyguard, Penelope, to accompany her.
The hallway to the women's restroom was a bit dark. As Isabella walked in, she accidentally bumped shoulders with a woman. Penelope quickly steadied her.
"Sorry," Isabella apologized.
But the woman wasn't having it. Even though both were at fault, she accused Isabella, "Can't you see where you're going? Apologizing doesn't help. You hurt me!"
Isabella hadn't expected to encounter someone so unreasonable.
She replied firmly, "Miss, we came from different directions and bumped into each other. It was an accident. Both of us are responsible. My eyesight isn't great, and yours probably isn't either."
"You dare talk back? Who do you think you are?" The woman snapped, surprised by Isabella's retort. She scrutinized Isabella, trying to figure out her identity.
"I'm just an ordinary person. Why, do you have some extraordinary status?" Isabella responded.
The woman wasn't stupid. Seeing Isabella's confidence and designer clothes, she figured Isabella had some background. Not wanting trouble, she huffed and rolled her eyes before leaving.
When Isabella came out of the restroom and walked into the hall, she saw two women sitting across from Michael. One of them was the woman she had just argued with at the restroom door.
