Chapter 41 “The Storm Between Us”
Chapter 41 “The Storm Between Us”
Scarlett’s POV
The night swallowed me whole.
Rain pounded against the pavement, soaking through my jacket, but I didn’t feel it. My thoughts were too loud, my pulse too fast. Every step I took was fueled by fury and heartbreak.
Damien had lied to me. My mother had lied to me.
And I was done being the girl left in the dark.
By the time I reached the safehouse, lightning split the sky. The place was silent, every shadow alive with memory. I didn’t bother knocking, I kicked the door open.
Damien turned instantly, gun raised, but the moment his eyes met mine, something shifted.
“Scarlett,” he breathed.
He said my name like it still meant something. Like he hadn’t just shattered everything between us.
I stepped inside, dripping water onto the floor. “Don’t.”
His brow furrowed. “Don’t what?”
“Don’t say my name like that. Like you still have the right.”
He holstered his weapon slowly, his expression unreadable. “You found out.”
I laughed at a raw, broken sound. “You knew I would eventually, didn’t you? You just hoped I’d be too blinded by you to see it.”
“Scarlett—”
“Stop lying!” I shouted, my voice echoing off the walls. “Maria. Loren. The files. You knew all of it!”
His jaw tightened, rain dripping from his hair. “It wasn’t supposed to be this way.”
“Oh, save it,” I snapped. “You used me. Just like your father used her.”
That one landed. His shoulders tensed, his gaze darkened. “Don’t compare me to him.”
“Why not?” I demanded. “He destroyed her. And you— you came into my life pretending to protect me, when all along you were carrying his ghost.”
He stepped closer, eyes burning. “I didn’t pretend to protect you. I did protect you. Every damn day.”
I met his stare, chest heaving. “For what? Guilt?”
Lightning flashed again, illuminating the raw emotion on his face. He looked torn, wild like he was fighting something inside him he couldn’t name.
“Because I care about you, Scarlett.”
The words hit me like a bullet.
I shook my head, tears mixing with rain. “No. You don’t get to say that. Not after everything.”
“I didn’t know at first,” he said quickly, his voice rough. “When I met you, I didn’t know who you were. I just saw… you. And by the time I did find out, it was too late.”
I wanted to believe him. God help me, I wanted to. But the wound was too deep.
“You should’ve told me,” I whispered. “You should’ve trusted me.”
“I wanted to,” he said, stepping closer. “But your mother your father there’s so much you don’t know.”
“Then tell me.” My voice cracked. “Tell me everything.”
He hesitated, his jaw working. Then, finally, he said it.
“My father and your mother were part of the same operation. A government contract gone wrong. They fell in love and it ruined everything. Your father tried to expose them. My father retaliated. That’s what started the war between our families.”
My stomach twisted. “And you came here to finish it?”
He shook his head. “No. I came to an end.”
“By lying to me?”
He moved closer still, until the heat of him cut through the cold. “By keeping you alive.”
I froze as his hand brushed my cheek, a touch that once made me melt now burned like guilt.
“Don’t,” I whispered, stepping back. “You don’t get to touch me.”
His eyes softened, but his voice broke. “You think I wanted this? You think I don’t hate myself for every secret I had to keep from you?”
I swallowed hard, tears stinging my eyes. “You don’t get to play the victim, Damien. You made me fall for you.”
He exhaled sharply, his voice dropping low. “And I fell right back.”
Silence hung heavy between us. The air crackled, thick with tension and unsaid things. My chest ached with all the emotions I couldn’t name love, rage, grief, longing.
“You lied to me,” I said again, weaker this time.
“I lied to protect you,” he said. “Because if you knew the full truth, you’d be next on their list.”
“Whose list?”
“The people are still loyal to my father,” he said. “He might be gone, but his network isn’t. They know who you are now, Scarlett. And they know what we are to each other.”
I blinked, stunned. “What are we?”
He hesitated then whispered, “Tied.”
That word. It felt heavier than it should have.
“I don’t even know who you are anymore,” I said, my voice shaking.
He took another step toward me, slow and deliberate. “Then let me show you.”
Before I could speak, he reached out and pulled me against him.
For a second, I froze, my brain screaming and pushing him away but my body betrayed me. His scent, his warmth, the way his breath brushed my neck it all came rushing back, every memory of the nights we’d shared, the secrets whispered in the dark.
“I hate you,” I whispered.
“I know,” he murmured, his voice hoarse. “And I still can’t stop wanting you.”
The air between us snapped like a live wire. Every emotion, anger, desire, betrayal twisted together until I couldn’t tell them apart.
I shoved him back, hard. “You can’t keep doing this! You can’t just touch me and expect me to forget!”
He stared at me, breathing ragged. “I don’t want you to forget. I just want you to see me.”
“I do see you,” I said, tears spilling freely now. “That’s the problem.”
Thunder rolled outside. The rain hit the windows harder, like the world itself was falling apart.
Damien raked a hand through his hair, pacing. “You want the truth, Scarlett? Fine. You’re not the only one haunted by what came before. Every time I look at you, I see the choice my father never made. He walked away from your mother. I won’t walk away from you.”
My pulse faltered. “That’s not love, Damien. That's an obsession.”
He stopped, eyes locking with mine. “Maybe it’s both.”
We stood there, soaked in silence, lightning painting shadows across the walls.
Finally, I found my voice again. “You should’ve stayed away.”
He gave a small, broken laugh. “You think I haven’t tried?”
His words echoed through me like a confession.
I didn’t move as he stepped closer again, slow enough that I could’ve stopped him but I didn’t. Not when his hand cupped my jaw, not when his breath mingled with mine.
For a heartbeat, everything went still.
And then I pulled away.
Tears burned down my cheeks as I whispered, “If I let you stay, you’ll destroy me.”
He closed his eyes, his voice barely a breath. “If I leave, I’ll destroy myself.”
And for one fleeting, dangerous second, I believed him.
But I couldn’t trust him. Maybe not ever.
I turned toward the door, forcing my voice steady. “You said your father’s network knows who I am. Good. Let them come. I’m done running from ghosts.”
Damien’s eyes widened. “Scarlett, no—”
“I’m done hiding behind lies,” I said, meeting his gaze one last time. “You want to protect me? Then stop trying to control me.”
He didn’t follow as I walked out.
But I felt his gaze on me, heavy and unspoken, until the rain swallowed me whole again.
As I disappeared into the storm, one truth anchored itself deep in my chest:
The past wasn’t done with us.
And neither were we.
