Chapter 65
Chapter 65
Rebekah pov
Yet, as we moved further away from the pack house, an unsettling feeling clung to me like a shadow. I couldn’t shake the sensation that Marcello's eyes were still on me, monitoring my every move, waiting for a moment of weakness. I pushed that disturbing thought aside, forcing my focus back to the mission at hand. We had to get Lyra to safety, and I couldn’t let Marcello discover our plan. Time was of the essence, and I knew the clock was already ticking against us.
As we approached the car, the chilly evening air wrapped around us like a thick fog. Vincenzo, ever the gentleman, opened the door with a flourish, allowing Lyra to slip inside. I could see her hands trembling slightly as she settled into the leather seat, her wide, dark eyes reflecting the remnants of her fear.
I climbed in beside her, the scent of new upholstery mingling with the faint hint of gasoline. With a soft click, Vincenzo closed the door and turned the key in the ignition, the engine roaring to life with a reassuring purr that cut through the lingering tension of the moment.
Lyra pov
As I slid into the sleek, dark sedan, I pressed myself close to Rebekah, struggling to process the whirlwind of emotions swirling inside me—fear, excitement, confusion. "Rebekah, what's going on?" I asked, my voice barely above a whisper, the tension in the air palpable. "What do you think Marcello will do if he finds out Vincenzo is leaving with me? And why are you even following us?"
Rebekah’s sharp green eyes met mine, a hint of mischief dancing in their depths. "I lied to Marcello about making a delivery, that cockhead," she replied, a smirk tugging at the corners of her lips. "So, I’ll drop you both off at the next junction. I’m not going with you."
My eyes widened in surprise, a pang of disappointment settling in my chest. "You’re not coming with us?" I asked, my heart sinking at the thought of facing whatever lay ahead without her beside me.
Rebekah shrugged, the leather of her jacket creaking softly. "I’ve got my own things to handle, Lyra. Besides, Vincenzo here seems capable enough to take care of you."
I turned my gaze to Vincenzo, who was driving with an air of calm confidence, his hands steady on the wheel, the city lights reflecting off his focused expression. "Who did you even get to bring me here?" I asked, curiosity bubbling to the surface despite my anxiety.
Vincenzo's dark eyes met mine in the rearview mirror, a hint of a smile playing on his lips, making me feel inexplicably reassured. "Let’s just say I had a chat with Marcello’s godfather. He agreed to let me take you, but I’m not supposed to tell Marcello."
My heart raced at his words. "Marcello’s godfather? You mean... the one who’s untouchable in this whole mess?"
Vincenzo's smile widened, a mixture of pride and mischief. "The one and only. Now, let’s focus on getting you to safety, shall we?" His tone was firm, yet there was an undercurrent of warmth that made me feel a little braver.
As we approached a dimly lit junction, Vincenzo slowed down and pulled over to the side of the road. Rebekah leaned in, enveloping me in a tight embrace. "Take care, Lyra," she whispered in my ear, her breath warm against my skin. "Stay safe."
I squeezed her tightly, feeling the lump in my throat grow larger. "Thanks, Rebekah. For everything." The weight of our friendship hung in the air, unspoken but understood.
Rebekah stepped out of the car, her silhouette framed by the glow of the streetlamp. She leaned towards Vincenzo, her expression turning serious as she locked eyes with him. "Take care of her," she said, her voice firm as steel. "Don’t let anything happen to her."
Vincenzo nodded, his expression turning resolute. Just as Rebekah was about to step back, he revved the engine, and in a flash, we zoomed off, leaving her standing in a cloud of dust, the echoes of her worry lingering in the air.
I gasped, my heart pounding in my chest. "What the...? Why didn’t he want to stop?"
Vincenzo’s gaze met mine in the rearview mirror, a glint of amusement sparkling in his eyes. "Because I said so. Now, remain silent. You talk too much." His tone was teasing yet laced with an undeniable seriousness that set the tone for the journey ahead.
My eyes narrowed, a spark of annoyance igniting within me. "Excuse me? I talk too much? You're the one who's been silent this whole time!" I huffed, crossing my arms defiantly.
Vincenzo’s grin widened, revealing a hint of mischief and confidence. "That's because I'm the one driving," he replied, his gaze fixed on the winding road ahead. "And I'm the one in charge here. So, shut up and enjoy the ride."
A flush of indignation crept up my cheeks as my mouth dropped open in disbelief. Before I had a chance to retort with something sharp, Vincenzo’s piercing gaze locked onto mine, a warning flickering in the depths of his dark eyes. "I mean it, Lyra. Shut. Up."
I clamped my mouth shut, my heart racing with a tumultuous mix of fear and irritation. This guy was a piece of work—utterly intense and infuriatingly composed.
But as I turned to look out the window, the landscape unfurling like a blur of trees and fading memories, I realized we were moving further away from the pack house, and from Marcello's suffocating grip. Maybe, just maybe, this unpredictable guy was exactly what I needed to reclaim my freedom.
