We are ready
We are ready
The first sliver of the lunar eclipse cut across the sky like a silver scar. Shadows pooled at the edges of Mount Pleasant, curling through the trees and around the packhouse with an almost sentient intent.
I sat in the nursery, hands pressed against my swollen stomach, feeling the twins stir more insistently than ever. Their energy pulsed like twin heartbeats, bright and electric. The air was thick, almost tangible, vibrating with a rhythm that matched mine.
Kevin and Kelvin stood on either side of me, vigilant, their eyes tracking every shadow, every flicker of movement outside. The pack was gathered in the great hall below, alert but silent, listening to the faint hum that had begun to resonate through the very walls of Mount Pleasant.
“It’s starting,” Kevin whispered, voice low but tense. “The eclipse. You can feel it, right?”
I nodded, a shiver racing down my spine. “They’re… awake. More than ever.”
Kelvin stepped closer, his presence solid and grounding. “Focus on them, Molly. Center the energy.”
I exhaled slowly, hands pressed tighter to my belly, and let the light stir within me. The twins responded immediately, sending out ripples of silver energy that pulsed through the room like liquid light. I could feel their consciousness brushing against mine—curious, aware, powerful.
“Your children are… extraordinary,” Kelvin murmured, awe lacing his voice. “Even at this stage, they’re aware of everything around them.”
“They’re trying to communicate,” I whispered, panic and wonder entwined. “I can feel… their thoughts. Their curiosity.”
Kevin crouched beside me, placing a protective hand on my shoulder. “Whatever happens, we’re here. We’ll manage it—together.”
The walls of Mount Pleasant began to hum, a low vibration that made the floor beneath our feet pulse. The twins kicked in response, and suddenly the light around me surged, spilling into the room in sheets of silver radiance.
Outside, the pack stirred. Wolves paced, ears pricked, noses twitching as the energy filtered through every corner of the estate. Even the trees seemed to lean in, branches swaying though no wind blew.
I stumbled back slightly, overwhelmed by the intensity. Kevin caught me instantly, eyes wide with both awe and concern. “It’s okay. You’re okay,” he murmured.
Kelvin’s hand brushed mine, grounding me. “Let them guide you. Trust them.”
I closed my eyes and surrendered to the sensation, letting the twins’ energy flow through me. And then I heard it—voices carried on the pulse of their power, faint but distinct:
Mother… protect… guide…
I gasped. It was unmistakable. They were speaking, though not in words. Pure emotion and intent radiated from them, threading into my mind like silver threads. My chest ached with love and fear all at once.
Kevin and Kelvin exchanged a glance. “They’re speaking through you,” Kevin murmured. “They’re forming their connection.”
I nodded, trying to steady my breath. “I can feel everything they see… everything they sense.”
Kelvin’s eyes softened. “This is what Kael warned about. The eclipse isn’t just symbolic—it’s a catalyst. Their powers, your connection to them, it all peaks tonight.”
A sudden pulse of energy knocked me to my knees, bright and fierce. I cried out, clutching my stomach, and Kevin and Kelvin steadied me, shielding me from the intensity.
“They’re strong,” Kevin said through gritted teeth. “Stronger than we imagined.”
“They’re learning,” I whispered through the haze. “But… the energy… it’s uncontrollable.”
Kelvin’s hands were firm on mine, steadying me. “Then we guide it. We focus it. Together.”
The light flared again, filling the room with brilliance that pushed back shadows in rippling waves. I felt their awareness growing, their consciousness expanding, touching every corner of Mount Pleasant.
Suddenly, the air outside shifted, colder, darker. I looked toward the window, sensing the presence of something—or someone—beyond the borders of the estate.
Kevin stiffened beside me. “They’re coming.”
“Who?” I whispered.
“The rogues,” Kelvin said, his voice low, edged with steel. “They’ve felt the surge. They know where the Heart’s blood is.”
I swallowed, panic rising, but the twins reacted instantly. Their energy spiked, sending a pulse through the room that made the walls tremble. I could feel their awareness: defensive, protective, daring anyone to challenge them.
Kevin’s jaw tightened. “They’re not going to get anywhere near here. Not tonight.”
Kelvin’s wolf shimmered faintly at his back, fur bristling, senses attuned. “Then we make a stand. But Molly… the twins will respond how they see fit. You need to be ready for that.”
I pressed my hands to my stomach, whispering, Stay calm… and the twins responded, the silver light pulsing in rhythm with my heartbeat. For a fleeting moment, the room was calm, the chaos held at bay by our collective will.
Then came the first sound—a howl from the forest, deep and guttural, and I knew the rogues were near. Shadows moved in the distance, creeping toward Mount Pleasant with purpose.
Kevin drew his blade, eyes blazing. “Get ready. No one breaches this house tonight.”
Kelvin shifted slightly, wolf instincts flaring. “The twins are aware. They’re going to act. Stay close to me and him.”
I gripped their hands, heart hammering. “I… I can feel them. They’re… waiting.”
The light flared brighter, filling the room, pulsing, alive. The twins were awake—fully awake—and the energy they radiated was so powerful that even the mountains seemed to tremble.
A sudden thought struck me: They can protect themselves. But they’ll need guidance. I inhaled, letting their energy merge with mine, feeling the flow of power like a river coursing through my veins.
Outside, the rogues surged, but the moment they crossed the outer boundary of Mount Pleasant, they were struck by a wave of silver energy. Wolves screamed as the light washed over them, shaking the forest and sending branches snapping to the ground.
Kevin and Kelvin fought with precision, but it was the twins’ power that kept the enemy at bay. Pulses of energy erupted from me in response to their movements, creating barriers and striking with uncanny accuracy.
“Watch!” Kevin shouted, deflecting a rogue’s swipe. “They’re learning fast!”
“They’re more than learning,” I gasped. “They’re… strategizing!”
Kelvin nodded, eyes glowing. “They’re aware of the fight. Guiding us without words.”
The battle raged, but the rogues faltered, unable to counter the combined might of Kevin, Kelvin, and the twins’ emerging power.
I sank to my knees, exhausted, energy still streaming from me. The twins shifted, small limbs brushing against my hands, communicating through light and pulse. I whispered encouragement, guiding them gently, feeling the bond strengthen.
Finally, the last of the rogue attackers fell back, scattered by the overwhelming force of the twins’ energy. Silence returned to Mount Pleasant, broken only by the heavy breaths of those who had fought.
I sank against Kevin, trembling. “They… they did it.”
Kelvin knelt beside me, his hands resting on mine. “They did. And so did you.”
The silver glow receded, leaving the room bathed in the pale light of the eclipsed moon. Outside, the forest was still, as if it too was holding its breath.
Kevin pressed a kiss to my temple. “We survived.”
I smiled faintly, hands stroking my belly. “No… they survived. And they’re amazing.”
Kelvin’s gaze softened, full of pride and awe. “You’re raising something incredible, Molly. Something that will change everything.”
I leaned back against Kevin, feeling the twins stir in response. The light inside me was calm now, steady, a pulse of life and power intertwined.
But even as the adrenaline faded, the memory of Kael’s warning lingered. The moon doesn’t give life without taking something in return.
I shivered, knowing that the eclipse had awoken something ancient and powerful. The twins were growing, learning, fully alive—and the world outside Mount Pleasant would take notice sooner or later.
But for now… for this moment, we were safe.
I pressed a hand to my belly, feeling the twins’ tiny pulses echo through me. “We’re ready,” I whispered. “Whatever comes, we face it together.”
Kevin and Kelvin flanked me, their presence a solid wall of strength and love. The twins stirred again, and the light in the room pulsed softly in response, gentle and protective.
The eclipse had passed, but the dawn that followed was brighter, warmer, and full of promise.
Mount Pleasant stood strong, and so did we.
And I knew, deep down, that the twins—my little Heart’s blood—were ready to meet the world.
