Chapter 138: Landline Buzz
Chapter 138. Landline Buzz
Sylvia's pov.
The line went dead after his big announcement in which I explained to him that I had gone on a short trip and would be back soon.
Luckily, he didn't seem to have a problem with that and was all bubbly the entire time, probably obscured by the nappiness of the news.
I stared at the apartment for a long time, wondering what I had agreed to. I promised him that I would make it back to be a part of his grand innovation.
My mother was just in the other room, her life had become a redundant mess, I feared to say, it wasn't a life she was living, more like death.
There was nothing to it. No joy, no laughter, just an endless stream of pain and suffering that bludgeoned her to agony.
I knew every second she's awake she wished for death, but I didn't want that for her. Losing my father was one thing, I didn't want to have to lose her as well which was why I had to be a part of Dr Maksim's experiment.
If only I could still get in touch with professor Donald. Why the hell wasn't he picking up?
My phone rang once again, and being already fed up, I sighed, glancing at the caller to see Peggy's name popping all over my screen.
Groaning inside, knowing ignoring her calls was only going to be detrimental for me. She could think I was dead and probably have her hunter team find my last location, leading them to the pack.
Also, she was the first human friend I had made. It wouldn't be right if I just left her hanging in that manner. With such reasoning, “Hello Peggy,” I sang in an embarrassed voice.
The first few seconds were as silent as a graveyard. I wondered if I truly picked the call, drawing the phone away from me and staring at it, but I got an answer when her chirpy voice came through.
“Is this… truly Sylvia?” Her voice tainted with shock as though she couldn't believe I was the one on the line.
I shied away from the phone a bit before responding, “Hi Peggy.”
Another minute of silence followed afterward before a short and breathless laugh followed after, “Give me a minute, I need to call off the search party, and the police and the FUCKING ARMY!”
Her shrill made me shy away from the phone even more as she went on about how she had been so worried, how she had asked around, “One minute you're here, the next minute you are ….”
“Where the hell are you?” genuine confusion in her voice.
I can't tell her where I was.
I shouldn't even be on this call even.
I glanced around, not feeling safe in my own home, “I'm…I'm at…home,” I stuttered, lowering my voice as much as possible but still audible enough.
“Home?”
I groaned inwardly, “Yeah, home, uhmm, my mother didn't really like the insecurity associated with Briseville so I had to leave,” shrugging my shoulders even though she couldn't see them.
A sore feeling settled in my heart. I didn't really like the idea of lying to her, but what other choice did I have? Out myself and let my family be tortured to death?
There was sadness in her voice and a sense of longing, “Oh, that's understandable, that doesn't still mean you can just up and leave without saying goodbye.”
My actions seem to have consequences, hurting her in ways I didn't expect, “I'm sorry, Peggy, I truly am,” I wondered if she knew if I was a werewolf, would she still reach out to me the way she did now.
I didn't want to think of any scenarios related to that as I wouldn't like the answers to them.
Her sigh came through the cell phone, “It's fine, I just missed you and I was worried, strange things are still happening back here, so it's actually best you left.”
Now I was curious, I had left everything unattended, “How strange?” Probing her for whatever information she had.
Peggy took a deep breath, ready to spill when a phone rang in the background, a short pause followed after, some background noises here and there asking who it was and what they wanted, “Hello?? Peggy? Is everything okay?”
My heart was starting to worry, “Where are you anyway? Are you still at the diner?” It was still day time so I doubted anything could happen to them, but still…
“Helloooo? Peggy? What's going on?”
My nails clipped between my lips as I bit them nervously, but before I could lose my mind, Peggy's voice echoed once again, “Oh, sorry about that Sylvie, it was the diners landline.”
“Who was it? What did they want?”
I could practically see Peggy shrugging even though not visibly as she responded, “Probably one of those prank callers, didn't say anything despite how long we asked.”
“They always do that, I wonder what pleasure it is from doing that.”
I sighed in relief, knowing they were safe, Peggy, oblivious to the internal anxiety I almost had as she went on and on about online prank callers.
“Peggy, back to what we were saying, you were about to tell me something,” I poked further.
She could just be the key to the information I needed that could help the pack prevent an attack whatsoever.
“Hmm, just the usual, the sounds had gotten louder and more of these…” She paused for a moment as though counting her next words, “...ferocious animals keep roaming around, someone really needs to get animal control on the block.”
Animal control? Really?
I felt irritated and wanted to rebuke her but there was only so much I could do.
“A few deaths do, sadly.”
Maybe I could counter her later then. They were still wolves out there on a killing spree, and then there's Peggy and her team on the same agenda as well.
What a horrible mess we have found ourselves.
