Chapter 137: A Breakthrough
Chapter 137: A Breakthrough
Sylvia's pov.
Mai?
That can't be though.
Mai was one of our companions who had returned from Briseville just the previous day. How could this be possible?
My brows furrowed as I turned back into the tense room. The young boy whose name was Myles narrated the events of the previous night.
“Mai was with my mother when it happened and I wasn't back at the time, the way my mother described it, one minute she was fine, the next minute she's acting all… wild and feral,” his brows furrowed as he recounted the events.
He as well couldn't believe what had happened and neither did anyone in the room.
His breath hitched, chest heaving gently, “she attacked our mom.”
“S–she a–ttacked our mother,” raising his trembling hands and staring at them, “it was a deep cut but luckily, I was just in time to keep pressure on the blood while it healed,” he was disoriented.
He broke down, eyes shifting unsteadily, as he fell to his knees, “You have to find her, she's not well, she's…shes...” He didn't know how to put it as well because he didn't understand it either.
Someone came up on the Alpha's orders and he was helped away.
The council as well as the leaders were deep in their own thoughts, with no idea what was going on.
At least I had an idea, but I would have to speak with Myles before I could be sure.
“What are we going to do now?” The alpha voiced the question as we all contemplated.
The words rose up my throat but I kept it to myself, if I wasn't sure, I couldn't say anything yet. That wasn't the case anymore.
I felt eyes on me, when I glanced around the room, Beta Sanders eyes locked on mine, “You seem rather unsurprised of these circumstances,” his gaze narrowed, hands crossed over his chest and an eyebrow raised.
All attention fell on me in that instant and I stood frozen, so much for trying to keep it hidden. I took a deep breath, “It's not like I'm not surprised, I'm just as confused as everyone else about this.”
“But you have seen it before, yes?” The alpha was rather adamant, his eyes shimmering with hope.
I gave a slow nod and a murmur erupted in the room, “Good then….you….”
I cut him off unapologetically, “However, I wouldn't say it's the same situation, I would have to speak with him first to know.”
My heart hammered in my chest as I despised being placed at the center of it all yet there I was using my own hands to do it.
The alpha agreed that I would speak with him, with supervision from Prudence by the Beta Sanders. I guess he still didn't trust me, but what else could I possibly do to the pack that I live in?
The pack discussed on what they would do afterwards, the measures they would take if this was an epidemic situation.
A pack was filled with tension as the atmosphere got even worse. On one hand we had the hunters and on the other, we had a strange…
I didn't even know what to call it at this point.
The gazes in the pack kept moving in my direction and I could already tell what they were thinking.
That this was my fault.
Technically my mother's fault, they were blaming my mother accusing her of spreading her disease. They didn't have to voice it out, it was all in their eyes.
To be honest, I couldn't take it any longer and excused myself. Alpha Jonathan cast me a wary look which I didn't understand but pushed to the back of my mind as I made my way back home.
My blood boiling at the audacity that they would even think that. Perhaps the reason for this sickness could be their twisted brains acting up by themselves.
Over my anger, I almost missed the sound of my phone ringing. When I went to pull it out, I noticed the bloodstains on my palm and on the tips of my claws which I didn't realise were out.
Glancing around to make sure no one saw it, biting the corners of my lips to try and get back in control, retracting them.
With my bloody palms, I fished out my phone and recognised the name instantly. My lips formed a firm line, It was probably something important, I couldn't keep avoiding it.
He had given me an opportunity of a life-changing experiment and here I was mingling with people that didn't want me or my family.
I took a deep breath, forced a smile onto my face before picking the call, at the same time, increasing my speed to the apartment because if anyone were to hear about it, it would be a whole other picture.
Closing the door, “Hello, Dr Maksim,” I was deeply apologetic, he didn't know I had left yet. If I didn't tell him, he would probably find out after my absence without even a notice.
“Ah, there's my little apprentice,” there was excitement in his voice that caught me off guard. I wonder what happened to have made him this way.
“You sound like you have big news sir,” I felt even more sorry for the situation I had found myself in and really wished things would have been different.
I wonder what this big news is.
Could it be …..
My eyes were wild like saucers, my heart hammered in its rib cage as my nerves skyrocketed as I impatiently waited for the news.
“There is news, not really big yet, but has the potential to be,” he said in a single breath and took one huge inhale and exhaled as well, “In other words, we have found a breakthrough!”
I couldn't breath, every huff came out laboured as my back pressed against the door.
I didn't know whether to feel happy or sad.
“You need to come in soon, things should be getting quite busy.”
Oh boy!
