Chapter 307

Chapter 307

James was trying his best to be nice, but Amelia and Henry weren't having it. They shook their heads firmly but politely.

"We've got other things to do, so we won't be staying," Amelia said.

James looked puzzled. "How can eating at your own home be considered an intrusion?"

Own home?

Henry couldn't help but laugh bitterly. For the past twenty years, when he needed a home the most, this so-called father had pushed him away without a second thought.

Now that he had found love on his own, James came back to tell him he had a home.

What a joke.

"There's no need, James. We have an appointment with a client. We need to go," Henry said, making up an excuse.

Seeing the tension rise, Amelia grabbed Henry's hand and led him away.

Once they were in the car and buckled up, Amelia still felt uneasy.

"Why do you think James's attitude towards us changed so quickly? I remember he didn't like us before," she wondered.

Henry started the car. "I don't know what he's thinking. Maybe he thinks Alexander is useless and that he'll have to rely on me, the neglected eldest son, for his retirement. He's probably trying to make amends early."

Amelia frowned. "Do you think James will hold a grudge because we left and refused his goodwill multiple times?"

Henry kept his eyes on the road. "Don't worry about his feelings. His opinion doesn't matter, and I won't change anything because of him."

Reflecting on it, Amelia agreed. After all, Henry had suffered so much in the Anderson Family, and James couldn't have been completely unaware. James had just turned a blind eye for the sake of family harmony. A passive bystander was as guilty as the perpetrator.

She touched the shawl on her shoulder and smiled. "Walter was always the best. This shawl is really beautiful. Every time I see it, I think of Walter and Lyric. They were so good to me."

Henry didn't have much of an impression of Walter and Lyric, but seeing Amelia's happiness made him happy too. Besides, he was very grateful for Walter's heartfelt words before he passed away. Their love journey had been incredibly difficult, with countless obstacles and discouragements along the way. So he was elated that someone blessed their relationship.

Henry gently lifted Amelia's hand and kissed it softly. "I will never let Walter down. I will care for you always."

Amelia nodded. "I believe in you."

Meanwhile, things were far from peaceful at the Anderson Villa.

Scarlett couldn't accept Walter's will. She admitted she had ulterior motives. She often sent Alexander to Walter's house to ingratiate himself with the lonely old man. She hoped that after Walter's death, Alexander would reap more benefits. But now, all those plans were in ruins.

After the meeting, she clutched Walter's will tightly, reading it over and over, almost wanting to burn a hole through the paper.

"I'll ask you one last time. How many times was this will revised? Was there a recording? Are you sure no third party tampered with it?" she demanded.

The lawyer had no reason to lie for Amelia and Henry and answered honestly."The last revision was in the hospital room, witnessed by many people. Afterward, the will was locked in a safe. It couldn't have been altered," the lawyer explained.

But Scarlett wasn't buying it. She couldn't wrap her head around the fact that Walter left so many shares and connections to Henry, a guy he barely knew.

Even if it was to help Amelia, the price seemed way too steep.

Was Alexander really that undeserving?

Even someone who had seen him grow up seemed ready to ditch him.

The more she thought about it, the more agitated she got. Scarlett lost it and started screaming like a madwoman.

"Nonsense! How could he leave most of his estate to that bastard? This is making a laughingstock of us in front of the neighbors and the Wood family! And those conditions! Claiming it's for Alexander's benefit to send him to school, but really, it's just a way for Henry to eliminate competition in the company! Why would he do this?"

Her voice got so loud it almost reached the street.

James walked in with a dark expression. "Enough! Haven't we embarrassed ourselves enough? Do you want to shout it out on the street? You might not care about your reputation, but does Alexander?"

After sending the lawyer away, James sank onto the couch, looking icy and stern.

Scarlett, still fuming, glared at James with eyes full of hatred. After all these years, she felt she never really knew him. "I know you think Alexander isn't as capable as that bastard, but isn't Alexander your biological son? How can you be so blatantly biased?"

Biased?

James thought bitterly, the last people to accuse him of being biased were Scarlett and Alexander.

Over the years, James had given Alexander the best of everything. He went to prestigious schools, and the cost of one tutoring session was more than an average family's monthly income.

But Alexander still turned out to be a spoiled playboy, thanks to Scarlett's constant coddling.

"You're the only son in the family. That illegitimate child doesn't deserve to compete with you. You don't need to try too hard," Scarlett once told Alexander.

And so, Alexander became who he was.

Everyone knew about the tough times Henry faced growing up.

James had just turned a blind eye, not that he was blind.

"Enough! Stop pretending. Don't you know why Walter left most of his estate to Amelia? How did he treat Alexander before? Did Alexander make his last days peaceful? Just the incident at the engagement party, where he left Amelia for some unknown woman, broke Walter's heart!"

These words were so reasonable that Scarlett didn't know how to respond. She stammered, her face red.

"But you can't place all the blame on Alexander. Didn't you force him? Otherwise, would he have acted impulsively? And Amelia switching her engagement to another son in the family isn't even more embarrassing for us?"

The more Scarlett thought about it, the angrier she got. She didn't understand why everyone always targeted Alexander.

Even if Alexander had messed up, wasn't it normal for young people to be impulsive?

Besides, he had already paid the price. Why couldn't they let it go?
