Chapter 146 The Baby is Here

Chapter 146 The Baby is Here

"Then move," Rhys ordered. "I'm coming with her."

He climbed into the van, taking Chloe's hand as the medics worked. Her fingers were limp, but he held on anyway, willing his warmth into her cold skin.

The van sped through the city, lights flashing, siren wailing. Rhys watched Chloe's face, searching for any sign of consciousness, any flash of awareness.

"Stay with me," he whispered. "You and the baby. Stay with me.. just hold on.."

At the estate, a secondary medical team had been mobilized, but the decision was made to bypass it entirely. Chloe needed a full hospital, operating rooms, specialists, and neonatal care. The Aegis facility was secure, but it wasn't equipped for a high-risk birth.

The van pulled into the emergency bay of the city's best maternity hospital. A team of doctors and nurses rushed out, transferring Chloe to a gurney and whisking her inside.

Rhys followed, his credentials getting him past the security desk, his presence a silent demand for updates.

"She's going into the OR," a nurse told him. "The baby is in distress. We need to perform an emergency C-section."

Rhys nodded, his throat tight. "Do whatever it takes. Save them both."

He watched them wheel her through the double doors, the world narrowing to the echo of her gurney and the beep of monitors. Then the doors swung shut, and he was alone in the silent hallway, waiting.

The clock ticked. Minutes stretched into hours. Rhys didn't sit. He didn't pace. He stood like a statue, his eyes fixed on the doors, his heart offering a silent prayer.

Somewhere behind those doors, Chloe was fighting for her life. And their baby was fighting for theirs.

Rhys remained in the hallway as the hours moved slowly, his back against the wall, his eyes fixed on the double doors. Nurses came and went, offering him coffee, asking if he needed anything. He refused them all.

Then, finally, the doors swung open.

A doctor emerged, her scrubs stained, her face tired but smiling. "Mr. Thorne?"

Rhys pushed off the wall, his heart pounding. "How is she?"

"Madam Chloe is stable. She lost a lot of blood, but we were able to stop the bleeding. She's going to be fine. She needs rest, but she'll recover."

Relief washed through him.. "And the baby?"

The doctor's smile widened. "You have a son. A healthy, beautiful baby boy. He's small, he came early, but he's strong. His lungs are working perfectly."

A son. A son.

Rhys felt the words settle over him, a weight and a wonder he hadn't expected. A son. His son. Chloe's son. Their son.

"Can I see them?"

"She is still in recovery, but you can see the baby. He's in the neonatal unit, just for observation, nothing serious. Follow me."

The doctor led him down a quieter hallway, to a room filled with warm light and soft beeps. Rows of clear bassinets held tiny, sleeping infants. But the doctor stopped at one near the window.

"Here he is."

Rhys looked down.

The baby was small, so impossibly small with tiny fingers curled into fists. His face was scrunched in sleep, peaceful and perfect. A white blanket was wrapped around him, and a small knitted cap covered his head.

Rhys reached out, his hand trembling, and gently touched the baby's cheek. The skin was soft, warm, alive.

"Hello, little one," he whispered, his voice rough with emotion. "I'm your father."

The baby stirred, his tiny mouth opening in a yawn, then settled back to sleep. Rhys stood there, watching him, the weight of the past months, the fear, the danger, the uncertainty, falling away.

This was why he had fought. This was why he had never given up. This small, perfect life, and the woman who had given it to him.

A nurse appeared at his side. "Would you like to hold him?"

Rhys nodded, not trusting his voice. The nurse carefully lifted the baby and placed him in Rhys's arms.

He was so light. So fragile. Rhys held him as if he were made of glass, his large hands gentle around the small bundle.

"Hey there," he murmured, looking down into the baby's sleeping face. "You gave us quite a scare. Your mother especially. But you're here now. You're safe."

The baby's fingers uncurled, brushing against Rhys's chest. A simple, instinctive movement, but it felt like a promise.

Rhys stayed there, holding his son, until the nurse gently reminded him that Chloe was awake and asking for him.

He carefully handed the baby back, his arms feeling empty without the small weight. Then he followed the nurse to Chloe's room.

She was propped up in bed, pale but smiling, her hair loose around her shoulders. When she saw Rhys, her eyes filled with tears.

"Did you see him?" she whispered.

Rhys crossed to her bedside, taking her hand. "I saw him. He's beautiful. Perfect."

"He has your eyes," she said, a weak laugh escaping her. "Or at least, I think he does. It's hard to tell with all the squinting."

Rhys sat on the edge of the bed, still holding her hand. "You were so brave, Chloe. You fought for him. Even when they left you, you fought."

"I fought for us," she corrected, her gaze holding his. "All of us."

The weight of the words settled between them. Not just about the baby. About everything. The trust broken and rebuilt. The walls torn down. The future, uncertain but hopeful.

Rhys leaned in, pressing his forehead to hers. "Thank you," he whispered. "For not giving up."

Chloe closed her eyes, a tear slipping down her cheek. "Thank you for finding me."

They stayed like that, connected in the quiet of the hospital room, the sounds of the city muffled beyond the windows. Somewhere down the hall, their son slept, a new life born from chaos and fear.

The war wasn't over. Julian and Olivia were still out there. Noah, still on the run.
