Chapter 38 Awaiting the war

Chapter 38 Awaiting the war
~~Damien's POV~~

My hand was cuffed to the table in the interrogation room; two FBI agents and one policeman stared angrily at me.

“We advise that to you confess now” one of the policemen spoke as he slid the laptop on the table closer to me, “We already have evidence, all we need is your confession”

I stayed silent and I could tell that it was getting under their skin.

“Should we torture him?” One of the FBI agents asked; he was the one I had punched on the nose. He had a cloth over it, and he was bleeding profusely. I had broken his nose.

A smile formed on my lips as his face twisted in pain.

“Is he smiling?” one of the men asked in shock.

“Look!” One of them knocked the table, “You can't get out of it this time, you can't escape it”

I exhaled, “I'm not saying anything without my lawyer present.” I spoke in a low tone.

Their jaw clenched, “You do not have to make it take longer than it should Mr Davenport we have all we need to lock up”

I said nothing.

Just then there was a knock on the door and Marcel walked, I smirked. Marcel was my lawyer, one of the best in the country.

“I'm Marcel Caruso” he stretched his hand to shake one of them. They gave him cold looks and didn't accept his handshake.

“Anyways,” Marcel raised his brow, and he placed his suitcase on the table. “My client pleads innocent.”

“We have evidence” one of the FBI stepped forward.

“One of our tech agents has scanned the video, and there's evidence that it's AI generated.”

They all exchanged looks. “Are you fucking with us?” one of them asked.

“I'll ask that you let my client go until you find valid evidence that he's guilty.”

“We have evidence,” they protested.

“AI-generated evidence,” Marcel corrected.

“What about this?” The man with the document I had signed slipped it out. I had signed deals with these officials to work with them, and when they double-crossed me, I scratched their names off with a rest hint and wrote “kill” next to it.”

Marcel looked at me and then back to the man. “Where did you get this evidence?”

“It's anonymous,” they responded.

Marcel nodded and pulled open his suitcase; he slipped out a pen and a paper and dropped something on it. He lifted it up. “Here, anybody could forge his handwriting.”

“So you are saying this note is fabricated?” the man with a bleeding nose asked in anger, his hands trembling with rage.

Marcel nodded and placed the paper on the table. I looked at it; he had written my name in my exact handwriting. That was one of Marcel's many skills; he could fabricate any handwriting he saw. One of the many things I liked about him.

“Yes,” he responded.

“I'm going to prove that it's not,” the FBI agent I had stabbed said.

“Have fun with it, but now I'll demand that you let go of my client now”

One of the keys slipped out from his pocket. He was angry, but there was nothing he could do. He walked towards me and unlocked the lock.

I massaged my wrist as I stood up. “Thank you.” I tapped his shoulder. I beckoned to Marcel as I strolled out of the place.

As we stepped down the halls, Marcel finally spoke, “That was fun.”

I smiled, “Indeed.”

“I missed this, the adrenaline, get into more trouble so that I can bail you out,” he joked.

I chuckled and turned to face Marcel. “You know I can't do that; my wife will worry.”

“Oh, Charlotte, I met her today.”

My brows pinched together. “You have met her?”

Marcel nodded. “I had to get all the facts first, so I went to your home. She begged me to help you get out.”

“How is she?”

“Worried,” Marcel responded, his hand resting on my shoulder, “You have a very beautiful wife.”

“I know, and I can't wait to get to her”

“These people are going to come back and try to get you down; that means we will be meeting again,” Marcel said. "Until then,” he bowed his head and turned to leave.

“Until then,” I mumbled.

A few minutes later I had driven home.

Lucas ran straight to me. “I knew Marcel was good, but I didn't know he would get you out tonight. That was fast.”

“Where is my wife?” I asked, ignoring Lucas’s words.

“Bedroom, boss,” he responded.

I immediately went upstairs to my bedroom. I pulled the door open, and there Charlotte was, sleeping peacefully on the bed. The lights were turned off, but it was lit up by the light that emanated from the television. The room smelled of cinnamon and a mixture of Charlotte's shampoo. I slowly closed the door shut and kicked off my shoes. I lifted the blanket she had used to cover up and slid into bed with her.

She had changed into a black nightdress, and her back was turned to me, I gazed at the s symbol on her back and thought back to the moment I had burned out on her.

My lips slowly drew to it, and I placed a kiss on it.

Her head lifted , and her body jerked with shock.

“Hey…hey it's me”

She turned around, her eyes wide with surprise and excitement. “You are back!” She exclaimed as she wrapped her arms around my neck in excitement, “Oh…thank God.”

I hugged her back. I almost couldn't breathe with her tight grip, but it was worth it. “I didn't mean to wake you up.”

“How did you get out?” She finally pulled away from me. I thought…“Oh god, I thought I lost you.”

“You'll never lose me” I placed a kiss against her nose. “I promise.”

She sunk into my arms, “Alexander is not going to rest”

“I know, love.”a I stroked her hair. “What are we going to do?”

“Nothing…for now, we will let him strike first.”

She looked up to meet my gaze , “I'm scared”

I shook my head. “Hey… I'm here; I'll protect you.” I stroked her cheeks.

“No…. I meant that I'm afraid of losing you”

That's one thing we have in common; we were afraid of losing each other. I pressed my lips against hers and kissed her, savoring every taste of her lips before I pulled away.

“You won't lose me, I promise, and as for Alexander…we will wait for him to strike.”
