Chapter 201 Gilbert and Eva
Chapter 201 Gilbert and Eva
EVA
The night was cool, the kind that wasn’t supposed to come with nightmares, but not for those who were slaves to fate.
Fate had favorites, there were those it manipulated nature to favor, and there were those it bent and pushed to make sure things worked for the favored; that was the category she fell into.
Did Eva mind? Maybe, maybe not.
Eva didn’t mind for myself, but cared when the person she loved was thrashing on the bed in a nightmare she couldn’t save him from.
“Gilbert! Gilbert!” He would not wake up until the nightmare let him go, but Eva tried anyway, pulling him to her chest, “Gilbert please.”
How she wished she could share his pain the way he had shared hers. How he had shared her visions during the war.
Finally he woke up, his pupils thinner, his body drenched in sweat, temperature burning and body trembling.
Asking no questions, Eva pulled the wet cloth and bowl she had prepared and began to clean his sweat, trying to regulate his temperature.
She didn’t get to do much because he clung to her like a second skin, like he wanted to burrow into her and hide there.
Every time she got asked why she wouldn’t marry Gilbert. This was why. He deserved someone that could save him. Not someone useless like she was, not someone that would add to his nightmares.
Although she would rather he pulled back so she could clean the sweat off his face, Eva let him hold her tighter, let him rest his head along her neck, let his arms tighten behind her back, because these were the only times she let him.
“Eva.” Gilbert muttered at last, even Eva couldn’t tell how much time has passed.
“Hey,” Eva muttered when he relaxed his hold. She no longer asked what he saw, he hadn’t told her since this recent nightmare began, curiosity was beginning to eat her out but she had too much self control to indulge it.
Gilbert cradled her face, bringing his lips close, it was a familiar dance now. Eva turned her head, avoiding his lips, this time she decided maybe they could both get what they wanted, “Tell me what you see.” She asked, she didn’t add anything else, but the reward in exchange for answers hung in the air.
His lips didn’t leave her cheeks, Gilbert skimmed up and down, appreciated the skin he was permitted to touch, calming himself and soaking her in. It was when the temptation to take her offer was too unbearable he finally let go.
Eva’s disappointment didn’t hide itself, Gilbert took the cloth from her hand and gave his face a hard scrub before swerving off the bed.
“You cannot continue like this. You must do something Gilbert.” Eva begged. Why was he so stubborn?
Gilbert came close and placed a kiss on her forehead, “What’s for today?”
“You’re pushing me to the wall.” Eva warned. There were measures she could take to find out, but she knew he would hate it, but if he wasn’t going to do anything, then she would take it upon herself. She would give him three more chances to tell her, Eva could only hope he took one.
“Fall back on me, don’t hit the wall.” Gilbert teased, but there was no joke in his tone. He turned and left her in his room.
It dawned on Eva that Gilbert was never going to tell her.
She stood up from his bed with her mind made up. She knew what to do.
Eva spent the next three days preparing, it should have not taken more than a day, even hours, but she had to be careful to make sure Gilbert didn’t suspect.
Now she stayed awake waiting for the dream to come, she should have felt guilty that she induced the nightmare this time, but it was for a greater good. She was doing this to help him, to make the nightmare go away completely.
The nightmare came slowly, she could see the signs, the beads of sweat on his head, the trembling of his pinky and ring finger which held the ring she had bought him earlier in the year. He never took it of and that gesture always made Eva’s heart full, it was also the link to his dream.
Eva linked her finger with his and reached her heart with him.
She could feel the resistance, he pulled his walls so high against her, it was almost like he knew she was going to do this, but even more than he was, Eva was very prepared, she linked another hand through his, tightening her grip and now instead of reaching into his mind, she reached for his dream, the vison. Recognizing a channel, the vision flowed through her, trapping her inside of it, Even when her body was no longer hers, Eva’s lips fell open, the shock of what her eyes was seeing, the horror.
The visions she’s had in the past were mere visions, they were neither dreams nor nightmare’s, but this, this was a nightmare. This was horror.
How could such power exist? How could life also be death? What is Gilbert’s duty in this?
It was then she saw the staff.
The staff they had to create from scratch.
Fate could not be avoided.
