Chapter 190 Cody's errors.

Chapter 190 Cody's errors.
ADRIANA
Stupid, stupid Cody.
Everything inside of me wanted to tear him apart.
Jared came toward me in long strides. “Do you know what this is?” he spat angrily.
I blinked, trying to work my way out of this. “A very archaic letter, written in a language less than two percent of the population can read?” I responded ignorantly.
Jared looked like he wanted to tear me apart.
“What’s wrong with you? It’s just a letter. Besides, even if those gems were dangerous, they’re now in the sea. What does that have to do with me? Oh, I think this is just more proof that we used to be in contact with the North. Now, I just need to know what happened. Wouldn’t it be nice if we made peace with them again? Then people would not doubt me as queen.” The words just kept falling out.
Jared shook his head. “I need to find Eve,” he muttered under his breath.
I was standing right in front of him, but it was Eve who was in his head.
“Well, since you cannot help me,” I said to Bale, “you’re dismissed. Although I don’t think you can leave yet. Chloe is still busy.”
“Adriana.” Cody came over to me, looking surprised. I couldn’t blame him. Bale coughed, and Cody corrected himself, “Your Highness.” His eyes dropped. It was funny; he hadn’t referred to me as that since we declared ourselves friends.
Then I noticed that while it was Bale who had coughed, it was Jared Cody seemed to be wary of. I laughed, placing my hand on his arm. “I’ve told you, you don’t have to call me that. Adriana is fine.”
“No, it’s not. You’re the Queen,” Jared snapped.
I ignored him.
I had asked Chloe if she knew anything about the North, but Chloe hadn’t really grown up in this part of the world, so she didn’t know much.
I sincerely missed Louisa. Louisa made things happen. I wondered if I should summon her, but it would take days to get a letter to the Prince City. My summons might interrupt something she was working on, and it would also take days for her to respond, or even to come here herself. Lastly, Luther was going to tear me apart for taking his woman away from his city. It was likely that he would come with her.
But wouldn’t that be a good thing? We would have backup if things went awry.
“I miss Louisa. I’m going to call her back to the High City,” I announced.
To my surprise, Jared reached for me, his grip tight on my forearm. “You will do no such thing.”
Gerald and Cody gasped at his manhandling of me.
Gerald was irrevocably attached and loyal to Jared, so he didn’t move an inch, but Cody stepped forward.
“You will unhand the Queen,” I ordered.
“I will talk to my niece however I want to,” he gritted back. “You will not summon my daughter.”
“I’d like to see you stop me,” I snickered.
Jared’s eyes widened.
I realized I had just done something I only did as Eve. I had challenged him.
My heart was racing against my chest. It was Cody who gently pulled me away, but he only could because Jared let me go.
No one said a word; the atmosphere was brewing with tension.
It was the barking and invasion of two big dogs and a teenager that broke the ice.
Daisy swirled into the room like she was the queen. Jared gave her a twirl and bowed. “Milady.” Something he had never done for me. It was like she was his niece and not me.
“Daisy,” I called, but it was the dogs that responded, jumping and wagging their tails in excitement. Damn, they looked bigger every time I saw them.
“I took them to school today,” Daisy beamed. My eyes widened in alert; these dogs were friendly, but they were also freaking protective of her. “It was bring your pet to school day. Unfortunately, no one had a pet as big as mine,” she sneered. Daisy was definitely a bully.
“You’re not bullying people, are you?” I winced.
She shrugged. “They know when to avoid me. They just respect me. Not only because I know the queen personally, but also because I have two big dogs. Sucks to be them,” she cheered.
I shook my head and laughed. Daisy, Daisy.
It almost seemed like she was growing exponentially.
“Come here.” The dogs had freed me to attack Jared, which gave me time to escape. “Tell me, do you miss Louisa?” I asked. “Wouldn’t it be nice for her to come check on us a little?”
Talking about Louisa was still a sensitive topic for Daisy. “Didn’t she just leave the High City?” she asked.
I sighed. I knew she missed Louisa, but I also knew she would not admit to it.
“Tell me, how has school been?” I asked, steering her toward my room and leaving Cody with Jared.
I just hoped Cody kept my secret like he promised.
