Chapter 296 296

Chapter 296 296
Luna
I watch Oscar from the doorway, and something twists in my chest at the sight of him so lost in his mind. Zeldric has taken everyone else to decide what to do. Everything’s gone to hell. Without Jackson Black, we’re back to square one, without a single lead to follow to find the son of a bitch who is my brother. And then there’s Oscar, who looks like he’s reached a point where even he can’t tell what’s real and what’s just in his head.
Sitting at the foot of the bed, he clicks his tongue and mutters something I can’t quite hear.
"Are you okay? Do you want me to bring you something to eat?"
He lifts his gaze and frowns.
"If I’m hungry, I can go to the kitchen and get food myself, can’t I?"
I swallow hard to push down the lump of anguish in my throat and lift my chin defiantly.
"Zeldric ordered you to stay in this room."
"Oh, did he now?" he tilts his head, and his gaze darkens. "What’s going to happen if I decide not to follow his orders?"
He stands up and starts walking slowly toward me.
"Are you going to kill me, sweetheart? Did they at least give you a weapon?"
"I don’t need one," I reply, waiting for him to stop just inches from me. "You would never hurt me. You’ll stay because I asked you to."
He smiles again and tilts his head the other way.
"Of course. I’ll do whatever you want because I’m your loyal dog… although last night the one on her knees like a good little bitch was you, wasn’t it?"
I flinch, and my eyes widen in shock.
"I knew it. You’re lying."
"What?" I step back, shaking my head, my heart pounding. "Oscar, you’re hallucinating again."
He smirks, staring at me without blinking.
"I’ve been thinking. Yeah, I didn’t expect the thing about my mom, and I admit I had those delusions, as you call them. But when it comes to you…" He inhales deeply and narrows his eyes at me. "I don’t know why you’re doing it, but you’re lying. You were here, sucking my dick and fucking me until I fell asleep. I can still smell you on my skin. I still taste you in my mouth."
He steps closer and brushes my hair from my face.
"And you’re still marked by my fucking teeth on your neck."
He closes the gap between us and grabs my chin, forcing me to look into his eyes.
"The question is—why are you lying, Luna?"
I hold my breath, and for a long moment, we just stare at each other in silence.
Shit.
My plan was perfect—or so I thought. I waited until he was sound asleep before leaving the bed. I disabled the security cameras on my way to the kitchen without being seen. And once I reached the basement…
I exhale sharply, my heartbeat racing as I remember what I had to do down there. Blood covering my arms, the blows of the axe, slicing into hot, pulsing flesh, Jackson’s eyes when he realized he was going to die…
I had to make it believable. I couldn’t risk anyone suspecting me, and keeping Oscar locked up and under surveillance was the best option. But he knows. Of course, he does. He knows me better than I know myself. I should’ve known he’d figure it out—and that puts me in a situation I never wanted to be in. The plan has to go on, no matter what.
I push his hand away and quickly step back, placing myself in the doorway. I bite my trembling lip, holding back the tears threatening to spill.
"I’m sorry," I whisper.
I throw my head back and slam it into the doorframe. Pain explodes through my nose and forehead. I cry out and stumble back into the hallway just as Oscar tries to reach me.
"What did you do?!"
"Help!" I scream, covering my nose with my hand to stop the blood pouring down my shirt. "Help me!"
Oscar’s stunned expression makes me feel even more guilty, but I can’t stop now. I have to finish what I started.
