CHAPTER FIFTY-TWO
CHAPTER FIFTY-TWO
ADAM’S POV
The engine gave a weak, rattling cough behind us. Like it was trying to weigh in on the conversation too, and Pop clicked his tongue at it in mild disapproval before going quiet again to listen.
"Look… Santan, I know it's not quite easy to believe, but a part of me does want this girl."
"Why didn't this part of you want her before she was rejected?"
"I hadn't seen her."
"So you only knew of her after her rejection."
"I've known her. Are you deaf? I told you she attended our school. I've known her since high school. Not a personal knowledge of her though."
"Was she among those that you fucked?"
Oh God! "No! and shut up! I just knew her. Her sister was quite popular, so it was easy to know her. You couldn't really miss her sister."
"So you fucked her sister?"
I immediately sent him a glare. "I did not. Can you stop?"
"I'm just trying to blend the whole story together. The whole batter isn't mixing in my bowl and I need to make a cake if I leave here."
Santan had the audacity to look pleased with himself for that one, like he'd been sitting on the line for a while, waiting for an opening to drop it. Even Pop's shoulders gave a small, betraying shake under the hood, though he didn't dare look up and confirm he'd found it funny.
"I think it's best you go back to your pack Santan."
"Oh no, This is my pack and I'm not doing such a thing. Keep speaking. I'm listening to you." He finally looked serious.
I was about to give up on this conversation when my dad, who was hitting something in the engine, piped his comment in. "Adam, I want you to be really honest with yourself. There is a plot of revenge in this." He said.
He hadn't even lifted his head to say it. That was worse, somehow. It meant he'd been chewing on his answer the whole time, letting Santan do the digging while he waited for the right moment to drop the shovel in himself.
"What if there isn't?"
"Then that's you lying to yourself. If you had wanted a mate all this while Amber was there."
"You know the history between Amber and I." he's back with this topic again.
"The fact that Amber cheated with Blake didn't change the fact you liked her. You had to outgrow and compel yourself to stop."
"Well, now I'm neutral towards her."
"If you wanted a mate you could have started over. She's not a stranger and she was the best choice for you."
"She was the best choice for you. You guys wanted Amber. After she cheated on me, I wasn't interested in her anymore." I never mentioned how keen these two were on my ex. But I guess you could see that now.
"Is a part of this to get back at Amber?" this was my brother.
"No. Look, I'm not like that anymore, okay? I don't see the need to revenge for so many things."
“I don't think you're going to let go of what Blake did to you. Many people have betrayed you, but Blake's always bites heavy." My brother added.
"Yes, Blake's betrayal was a lot…" and I meant a lot… "But I wouldn't put someone else's life and hope in the line of my revenge. That would be me being quite wicked, and that's not me."
The both of them fell quiet and that was a silent disagreement to the statement I had made.
The only sound left in the shop was the drip of something from beneath the sedan, slow and steady, and the far-off bark of a dog from somewhere down the road. Even the engine seemed to have given up arguing.
I stood to my feet and walked towards the cooler that sat nearby and popped out a can of beer. Opening it and chugging it down immediately. When my dad finally shut the bonnet of the vehicle.
His grease and oil and grime-stained apron meeting with my eyes immediately. I almost cringed at the sight.
My dad and Santan were people who had the most things in common. They didn't mind getting dirt on themselves.
I, on the other hand, wasn't a fan. My wolf, though, loved it a lot.
I'm quite sure my wolf and my physical presentation of a body would be having internal conflicts behind my head.
Pops cleared his throat, wiping his hands on a rag that had long since stopped doing its job, and looked between the both of us for the first time since the conversation started, "All I have to say is this, Adam. this is a young lady you're giving hope to. It's a young lady you're exposing to further conversations in the pack, because everyone knows the success rate of breeding is quite low. And I'm your dad. You may not see some truth in what I'm saying, but it doesn't mean you cannot think about it to see it. Consider the young lady at hand in everything." and ended the conversation.
We switched the topic to something else entirely.
