Chapter 59 He Bought Early Pregnancy Test Strips
But Sophie didn't want to hear any "buts." She pushed him away and went straight to open the window.
This was the top floor. As soon as the window opened, wind rushed in, whipping her hair wildly.
She leaned against the windowsill, half her body hanging out.
Arthur's mind went blank and he quickly grabbed her. "What are you doing!"
"You don't want me anymore, so what's the point of living?" Sophie looked back at him, tears streaming down her cheeks.
"I might as well jump right now and make things easier for you both. After all... after all, I've only been living for you anyway."
"Don't talk nonsense!" Arthur held her tightly. "Sophie, don't do anything stupid!"
"Then tell me!" Sophie stared at him intensely, her eyes unusually bright. "When exactly are you going to divorce her and marry me? Give me an answer, right now!"
Around the corner in the hallway, Aria's hand was already gripping the wheelchair armrest.
She should have turned around and left immediately, but the damn broken wheel got stuck at that moment and wouldn't turn.
She was forced to stay there, watching Arthur's suddenly clenched fists.
Then she heard him say.
"Next month. Once my mom's condition is stable, I'll definitely divorce Aria! I'll definitely marry you!"
Every word was firm.
Sophie's eyes lit up. "Really?"
"Really." Arthur's voice was hoarse.
Sophie threw herself into his arms, and Arthur hesitated for a moment before slowly embracing her.
-
Aria told Arthur about Elizabeth wanting to move to the villa.
Arthur didn't have much of a reaction. He just said he knew, then called Ann and told her to get things ready.
A moment later, Aria looked at Arthur. "Don't you have anything to say to me?"
Arthur thought for a moment. "You'll move back, right?"
Aria nodded. "Yes."
And that was it.
He didn't mention anything about marrying Sophie in a month. Aria let out a mocking smile and shook her head.
What was she being sentimental about again?
Arthur could tell something was off with Aria's expression, but he didn't pay much attention. His mind was actually on something else.
In just two days, he'd seen her throw up at least three times. She'd vomit when hungry, when smelling something unpleasant, and especially when eating food that didn't agree with her.
Plus, there was Aria's thin figure and her slightly rounded belly...
She must be pregnant!
Arthur thought this, and of course it would be simple to verify.
On the way to take Aria back, he stopped the car, saying he was going to the supermarket to buy some food, and casually bought a pregnancy test kit.
He removed the outer packaging, keeping only the test strip in his jacket's inner pocket.
Then he took Aria straight back to the villa.
Aria frowned. "Your mom won't be discharged that soon. I can move back when she gets out."
"You're going to move back anyway, why worry about a day or two?" Arthur smiled at her. "We'll have to sleep in the same room eventually anyway. Might as well get used to it early?"
Aria glared at him.
Arthur sighed. "Your leg isn't doing well right now. Who's going to take care of you if you go back to the apartment? Are you planning to live in a wheelchair by yourself and order takeout for every meal?"
"What if you slip while taking a shower and there's no one there to help you up?"
As he spoke, he glanced at her belly.
Sure enough, this reason made Aria shut her mouth immediately and stop talking.
When they got home, Ann had already prepared lunch.
The whole table was full of Aria's favorite dishes.
Arthur put two pieces of sweet and sour chicken on her plate. She'd just taken a bite when her brow furrowed, then she pushed it aside. She ate a few bites of mashed potatoes, and her expression changed again.
She suddenly asked. "Ann, did you add canned pineapple to the mashed potatoes?"
Ann answered. "Yes, it's your usual favorite brand."
"Don't add it next time. I prefer something lighter now." As she spoke, she reached for the cream of mushroom soup nearby, served herself a bowl, and slowly sipped it.
Arthur narrowed his eyes. Thinking about everything these past days, he became even more certain.
That evening, he walked into the room, clutching the pregnancy test strip, thinking about how to bring it up with Aria.
"You seem to be pregnant, try this."
No, she definitely wouldn't agree.
"I need a little of your urine, just a little."
No, that won't work.
"Let's go to the hospital for a full checkup!"
They'd just come from the hospital. Did Aria look like she enjoyed going to hospitals?
This reason was ruled out again.
After thinking it over, he finally placed the test strip on the sink in her bathroom.
Would she use it this way? And then what, go through her trash can after she used it?
If... if she really was pregnant, what should he do?
Lost in thought, the doorknob turned, followed by the sound of wheelchair wheels rolling on the floor.
Arthur's heart jumped. Aria was coming up.
She was on the phone with someone.
"...In the end, it's still the hospital's fault. The streetlight at the entrance is broken and they won't fix it, not to mention that big rock at the entrance."
"You're just too nice. If it were me, I'd definitely sue the hospital!"
The phone was on speaker, and a man's voice came through—Charles's voice, making Arthur's face darken as he stood in the bathroom.
He also heard Aria laughing.
"Only you would say that. Someone keeps blaming me for being careless." Her voice was lazy.
Arthur frowned. This so-called "someone" couldn't be referring to him, could it?
"...Much better, it doesn't hurt anymore, just still not very convenient to walk."
After a few more words, she hung up and opened the bathroom door, running right into Arthur inside.
"What are you doing here?" Aria looked him up and down.
Not surprisingly, she saw the pregnancy test strip in his hand.
She froze. Arthur coughed, somewhat awkwardly placing the thing on the sink.
"I think you... might be pregnant. Try it, what if you really are?"
Aria looked at him strangely.
Didn't he already know she was pregnant and keep pushing her to get rid of it?
Even if he had doubts, he should be doubting whether she'd gone through with the abortion, not acting like he'd never known she was pregnant.
She frowned. Suddenly, a flash of insight struck her, and she understood immediately.
Maybe Arthur really never knew!
He'd never said directly to her "go get rid of this baby."
Everything before had Sophie involved. It was Sophie who kept saying Arthur didn't want this child, it was Sophie who sent that reply letter and those threatening messages!
No wonder everything made sense now.
Her eyes flickered as she looked at the test strip, her mind in chaos.
Should she let Arthur know?
