Chapter 26
The figure stepped back, their cloak swirling in the air like smoke, and I felt something in the room shift—something subtle, but undeniable. The temperature dropped, the air thickening with a tension I couldn’t place. The shadows around us seemed to stretch and twist, as if they were alive, reaching for something. Reaching for me.
For the first time, I could sense the true magnitude of what I had stepped into. It wasn’t just the weight of the moment, or the war, or the power inside me—it was something older. Something deeper. The very fabric of this place seemed to hum with a dark, ancient energy, as if it had been waiting for me to arrive, to finally step into my inheritance.
The figure nodded once, as though they had been expecting me to make that choice. “Very well, Tess,” they said, their voice low and full of something like approval. “You will learn what it means to wield the power of the old gods. And you will learn what it costs.”
I swallowed, my throat dry as dust. The words felt like a warning, an omen. But there was no turning back now. I had made my choice.
"Show me," I repeated, more forcefully this time. I needed to know. Needed to understand what I had gotten myself into. If this was going to be the end of me, then at least I would know why.
The figure’s lips curled into a dark smile, and they raised a hand, fingers outstretched. Slowly, deliberately, they began to chant. The words were foreign, a language that seemed to vibrate in the air, thick with power. As they spoke, the shadows in the room flickered and writhed, coming to life in a way that was both mesmerizing and terrifying.
The floor beneath me seemed to shift, the ancient stone groaning in protest, as though the building itself was reacting to the awakening. The walls seemed to pulse with energy, their once-still surfaces now alive with veins of light running through them, glowing like embers in the dark.
I felt it then—the power, stirring deep within me. It was subtle at first, like a whisper against my skin, but it grew stronger with each word the figure uttered. It was in my blood, that familiar burning sensation I had felt before, but now it was sharper. More real. More alive. It was calling to me, pulling at something deep inside my soul, as if it had been waiting for me to answer.
I tried to breathe, to steady myself, but it was like holding my breath underwater. The power surged, crackling through my veins, filling every inch of my body. My pulse thudded in my ears, faster and faster, as though the world itself was syncing with the frantic beat of my heart.
The figure’s eyes were locked on mine, watching, waiting, as if they were seeing something in me that I couldn’t yet understand. They stopped chanting, and the room went deathly still. The shadows hung heavy in the air, the silence deafening.
“You feel it now,” the figure said softly, their voice almost a whisper. “The blood of your ancestors, the power of the gods that flows through you. It is ancient, Tess. Older than anything you know. You are the vessel. The key to what comes next.”
I could barely hear them over the roaring in my head. The power inside me was growing, spiraling, threatening to overwhelm me. I felt like I was about to burn from the inside out, the heat in my chest unbearable.
“What do I do?” I managed to gasp, though my voice felt distant, muffled by the rising pressure in my mind.
The figure’s smile deepened, and they took a step closer, their presence radiating an unnerving calm. “You must *accept* it. The power, the legacy. You must embrace it, Tess. Only then can you begin to control it.”
The words hit me like a slap to the face. *Control it?* I didn’t even know what it was. I didn’t know how to *accept* it. My body was screaming at me to run, to get away from whatever was happening, but the power… the power was like a storm I couldn’t escape.
“I can’t,” I whispered, the words slipping from my lips before I could stop them. “I’m not ready for this. I don’t even understand it.”
“You don’t have a choice,” the figure replied, their voice sharp now, as if they were growing impatient. “This is your birthright, Tess. The power has always been inside you. The choice was made long before you were born. Now it is time for you to awaken to it.”
Before I could respond, the figure raised their hand again, and I felt something shift in the air. The room pulsed, the shadows around us intensifying, becoming thick, solid.
Then, it happened.
The power exploded inside me.
It was like a burst of lightning, a firework going off in my chest, and I couldn’t breathe. I couldn’t move. The air around me crackled with energy, the walls vibrating with the force of it. I was drowning in it, consumed by it. I felt the fire sear through my veins, the power burning its way through every part of me, every fiber of my being. My muscles spasmed as the magic inside me stretched, trying to break free, to take over. It wanted me. It wanted to be free.
I opened my mouth to scream, but no sound came out. The world around me seemed to dissolve, fading into nothingness, as the power inside me grew. My vision blurred, darkness creeping in at the edges, but I couldn’t let go. I couldn’t escape it.
And then, in the darkest part of the storm inside my mind, I heard a voice.
*It’s time.*
The voice wasn’t mine. It wasn’t the figure’s, either. It was ancient, resonating deep within me, as if it had always been there. A part of me, waiting to awaken.
*Accept it.*
The voice was both soothing and demanding, pulling me toward something I couldn’t understand. I didn’t know how to accept it, how to control it, but the voice was insistent.
I *had* to.
I focused on my breath, tried to steady the rush of panic surging through me. I couldn’t let it consume me. Not like this.
*Embrace it.*
And so I did.
I let go.
I surrendered to it.
The moment I did, it was like the world snapped back into place. The room, the figure, the shadows—they were all there, but the power inside me had settled, grounding itself deep within my core. It was no longer an overwhelming force, but a living presence, pulsing gently in the background, like a second heartbeat.
I gasped for air, my body trembling as I opened my eyes. The room was dim, but now I could see it differently. The shadows were still there, but they didn’t feel threatening. They felt… *familiar*.
The figure watched me closely, their expression unreadable, but their eyes flickered with something like approval.
“You’ve done it,” they said, their voice low and satisfied. “You’ve accepted the power. Now, you must learn to wield it. And learn quickly, Tess. The war is coming. And you—” they paused, their gaze darkening, “—you are at the center of it.”
I took a shaky breath, feeling the weight of their words settle in my chest. I was no longer just Tess, the girl from a small town, unaware of the forces that had shaped her life. I was something else now. Something more.
And there was no turning back.
