Chapter 53
The pleasant family gathering turned unpleasant because of Jessa's arrival.
Everyone tried not to make Jessa feel too left out, for Faye's sake.
Faye chatted with me about some things regarding Jessa. She only knew that Jessa and Levi had a good relationship, like boyfriend and girlfriend.
Later, she heard that Levi had married me, and the family rarely mentioned anything about them after that.
She said she had asked Levi's mother, but didn't get anything special out of her.
Close to noon, Nola and I had plans for lunch. She said she was going on a blind date first and asked me to call her in ten minutes so she could make a perfect escape.
After going on so many blind dates, Nola stopped caring about saving face - this was her direct rebellion against her father.
I stood by the window when my phone rang.
I thought it was Nola calling, but the screen showed it was Faye.
"Hello, Faye, what's up?"
"Blair, I really need help. Come quickly, I can't handle this. I'll send you the location."
"Is it urgent..."
Beep... beep...
Faye had already hung up. From her tone, she must have run into some emergency.
I sent Nola a message and quickly headed to the location she sent. The map showed it was a dessert shop near Levi's company.
The coffee shop next door was one Levi liked. I used to go there sometimes to buy him coffee.
I didn't know what happened to Faye. Actually, it would be more convenient for her to contact Levi. It would take me twenty minutes to drive there.
Maybe it was a girl thing. I didn't contact Levi and just rushed over at full speed.
As soon as I walked in, I saw Arabella and Jessa, both with dark expressions.
Faye stood to the side, looking very innocent.
The three of them were just standing there doing who knows what, looking completely out of place.
"Blair, you're finally here!"
Faye was about to run over when Arabella stopped her.
"You deceiving little thief, don't think you can leave."
I was a bit confused about the situation. In broad daylight, Arabella was being too bold.
"Mom, this is all a misunderstanding." Jessa looked helpless.
What on earth was going on?
"Let go of me." Faye struggled as Arabella held her tightly.
Arabella glared at me. "Why are you everywhere?"
"Let go of Faye. If there's something, talk to me."
I really couldn't tell what they were playing at, or how Faye got mixed up with them.
Faye finally broke free and ran to my side, then hid behind me.
"Blair, I'm really innocent. I don't know anything."
"Take your time and explain."
I gently patted her back. Her body was trembling a bit - she was really scared.
"Jessa asked to meet me, then she gave me a gift. I thought it was too expensive and didn't want to take it at first, but she insisted."
"Then her mom showed up and accused me of tricking Jessa into stealing this thing to give to me..."
Faye spoke while catching her breath. This gift really wasn't anything rare. The Morgan family had plenty of these things, and I personally had quite a few too.
Maybe to Arabella it was a treasure. After all, last time she used my mother's things to blackmail me for a million dollars.
She always valued money like her life, so I could actually understand her behavior now.
But the source of this matter was Jessa - she was the one who brought it to give to Faye, not Faye asking for it.
Could it be that because Faye called her stingy, she took her mother's jewelry to please Faye?
Faye was Levi's cousin. To win Faye's heart, Jessa really went to great lengths.
Just the method was a bit ridiculous.
"I know my own daughter. If you hadn't tricked her, how would she dare take my things?" Arabella was relentless.
Faye rolled her eyes. "My family has way better stuff than this. The quality of yours is so poor - if Jessa hadn't insisted on giving it to me, I wouldn't even bother looking at it."
Probably because I had arrived, Faye had gained some confidence.
Arabella said through gritted teeth, "If I hadn't come, this would have become yours. Why are you pretending? Who knows where you came from, you wild girl."
"Mrs. Greer, my aunt treated you well before. How can you talk about me like this? I won't let you hang around with her anymore."
"Your aunt?"
Jessa bit her lip. "She's Levi's cousin."
So after all that arguing, Arabella didn't even know Faye's identity.
Suddenly, she changed her tune. "Oh my, this is just a misunderstanding. We're all family."
"I'm not family with you. You just called me a thief."
Faye stared at Jessa. "Jessa, I'm not the kind of person who looks down on the poor and up to the rich. I don't want your gift either. You didn't need to steal from your mom."
"Faye, I didn't steal..."
I had basically figured out the situation. Jessa and her mother's behavior was just too ridiculous.
Arabella was actually that guarded against Jessa - her own daughter taking something from her would be called stealing.
Also, Jessa should have plenty of treasures. I didn't believe Levi had never given her anything. Could it be that she was reluctant to part with the really good stuff?
These two were just too weird, creating such a mess. The most pitiful one was Faye, being treated by Arabella as a thief who convinced Jessa to steal.
She actually chased Jessa all the way here.
"Blair, I want to go home. They're too scary."
"Did you tell your brother?"
I was afraid Levi would find out and laugh. If he came to solve this kind of thing, Jessa would probably break down.
"Yes, he sent me a message saying he'll be here soon."
"Call him now and tell him everything's fine."
"Okay."
I saw the gratitude in Jessa's eyes. If Levi knew about this small matter, she would have to explain for ages.
As for me, I just didn't want Levi wasting time on this kind of thing.
"Don't be so smug. I don't really care that much about these things. It's just unclear situations that bother me. Now that it's clear, I'll just give it to her."
Was Arabella talking to me?
"Mom, I already told you, but you insisted on making a scene."
"Hmm?"
Arabella looked at Jessa sternly.
"I'm taking Faye with me. You two do what you want."
I didn't want to look at their faces anymore. These weird people were doing weird things every day.
"Stop right there!"
Arabella blocked my way. "Don't think we're afraid of you. My daughter will marry into the Morgan family sooner or later. Stop doing things that aren't worth the effort."
"What are you talking about!"
Faye walked over and said loudly, "Let me tell you, I only have one sister-in-law. Jessa and my brother - that's all in the past. Also, I'm going to tell my aunt about your behavior today."
"Faye, it's all a misunderstanding. Please don't say anything."
Jessa was almost crying. She didn't expect things to turn out this way. She probably just wanted to build a good relationship with Faye and didn't expect Arabella to follow her.
"Jessa, don't even think about becoming my sister-in-law. It's impossible."
