Chapter 405

Chapter 405

My sleep quality kept getting worse—I woke up at just five in the morning.

I tossed and turned, not wanting to wake Levi.

He was sleeping peacefully. We'd talked a bit last night, chatting until drowsiness took over, and he'd fallen asleep first.

Cleo's push for remarriage still weighed on me. I'm the type who overthinks everything, so even after Levi said in frustration that he wouldn't deal with her anymore, I still wanted to find my own way to ease some of his burden.

But what could I do?

I was already on leave at home. I had almost no opportunity to go head-to-head with Michael, and the company needed a smooth transition—I shouldn't be taking risks.

After weighing the pros and cons, I decided to observe for now.

Levi would naturally have his own strategy. Maybe not adding to his problems was the best way to help.

I drifted in and out of sleep for over two hours before finally deciding to get up and get some air. I moved quietly, checking carefully when I closed the door—Levi hadn't stirred.

Just as I was heading downstairs, my phone buzzed. I flinched, and Indigo immediately asked with concern.

"Mrs. Morgan, are you alright?"

I steadied myself and tugged at my clothes. "I'm fine."

I opened my phone while walking. It was a message from Nola: [WR Corporation is holding a networking event. Can you attend?]

I hadn't expected her to be up this early either. After thinking for a moment, I called her back.

"Hello? You're up already?"

"Yes."

"The company has a pretty important meeting today. I can't make it, but I can't afford to snub Mr. Sullivan either. Are you free?"

It was meant to be a casual outing anyway, and I happened to be available. As for Elliot and me—the more I avoided him, the more I'd trap myself in a vicious cycle.

I might as well face it head-on with a clear mind. I didn't need to prove my innocence to anyone. More importantly, I still wanted to do something for the company with what abilities I had.

"I can go."

"Thanks so much. It's mainly because our company is also a partner, and for the company's publicity, I'll have to sacrifice some of your time."

"That's too formal. You're still fighting on the front lines."

Nola laughed. "I'm just worried Levi will get jealous. Mainly because Elliot is so weird—I've always felt he doesn't have good intentions toward you."

"You're exaggerating."

"Not at all. But thinking about it, who wouldn't like a woman as outstanding as you? If I were a man, I'd be smitten too."

"I never thought at my age I could still attract women."

"You've only been home a few days and you've gotten this funny."

"You've accidentally discovered another of my strengths."

"The timing isn't tight—it's at ten-thirty this morning. You'll have plenty of time to prepare. When you appear in public, there'll definitely be some gossip, but don't take it to heart."

I let out a breath. "It's normal speculation. Showing up pregnant without publicly sharing any information about my husband—people are bound to wonder."

"Good. I'm going back to sleep now."

"You're going back to sleep? You sleep so well."

"Mainly because you're so considerate of me—you never wear me out."

"Alright... talk later."

I sat on the sofa clutching my phone, lost in thought, rubbing my round belly. Actually, I should probably keep a low profile, especially appearing at events with Elliot.

Indigo walked over with a glass of milk. "Mrs. Morgan, have some milk first. I'll start on breakfast right away."

"I'm not really hungry. You don't need to rush."

"I overheard bits of your conversation just now. Are you going out today?"

"Yes."

I took the glass and held it in my hands.

"The company has an event I need to attend."

"Then let me go with you. What time is it?"

"Ten-thirty this morning."

Indigo smiled warmly. "I promise not to disturb you. I'll just wait nearby."

"I definitely trust you, but I think I can manage on my own."

There were still many household matters to attend to, and if I went alone, it might attract less attention. I was worried Levi would fret over me. At that thought, I suddenly realized—my head injury hadn't healed yet.

Showing up with gauze on my head probably wouldn't look great.

"Mrs. Morgan, what's wrong?"

"Nothing."

I started having second thoughts. I should've known better than to agree so readily.

"When do you need to change your bandage? Should I take you to the hospital, or can I change it here at home?"

Indigo was always so attentive, remembering these small details.

"Changing it at home is fine. Let's just keep this between us—don't let him hear about it, or he'll insist on going to the hospital again. I really hate hospitals."

"Okay," Indigo said quietly.

The more I thought about the networking event, the more I felt I wasn't suitable. My pregnancy belly already affected my image enough. If I showed up with an injury too, people would definitely speculate.

This kind of event would surely be publicized. When Levi saw it, would he sarcastically call me 'disabled but determined'?

"Blair, you agreed too quickly this time."

I kept repeating this to myself, but I didn't regret it at all. The company was my own—what did it matter if my image wasn't perfect?

"Mrs. Morgan, I've been thinking—having me tag along won't really help. Why not have your assistant go with you instead?"

Indigo's suggestion actually made sense, but I didn't have an assistant...

Since starting work, I'd shared Nola's assistant for some things. I suddenly realized the necessity of having my own assistant.

"Kennedy..."

An idea formed in my mind. Kennedy could go with me. For one, she was the company's design director with strong professional capabilities. For another, she had great presence and an excellent image.

Though her hand...

"That can be overlooked."

Indigo was polishing a vase. "Mrs. Morgan, are you talking to yourself?"

"I just thought of a good solution. You actually gave me the idea."

"I don't know anything—I was just rambling." Indigo smiled awkwardly.

I opened my phone and gestured for her to stay quiet.

She tactfully headed to the dining room to start on breakfast.

Kennedy had one remarkable trait—even when she stayed up late, she'd still wake up early the next day.

I called her, standing by the window.

"Boss, what can I do for you?"

"I actually do have something."

"Shoot."

Kennedy was never coy, and she didn't get hung up on small details.

"There's an event today. Would you be willing to go with me?"

"Absolutely. I've been at home so long I'm practically growing mold."

She agreed readily without even asking where or what for.

"I'll pick you up once I'm ready."

"Will the handsome driver take us?"

"Stop teasing him. He's getting married in just a few days."

"Okay, okay. I always thought people around Mr. Morgan would be smooth operators, but the handsome driver is actually pretty straightforward and honest."

I shook my head helplessly. 'Straightforward and honest' and 'handsome' didn't usually go together.

"Then it's settled. See you later."

"OK."

I'd finally solved the companion problem. If Kennedy was willing, having her represent the company would be a good solution too.
