Chapter 85 The Fire and the Fallout

Chapter 85 The Fire and the Fallout
The air outside the warehouse was cold and smelled of wet earth. It was around the hour before dawn, but the silence didn’t last.

Vincent Harrington stood in the shadows, his black coat blending into the dark. He watched his men move like ghosts in tactical gear. This was the third warehouse they had checked. The first two were empty, but this one had cars out front.

This was it.

Vincent didn't usually go on raids. He was the boss after all; he gave the orders. But Alexander was different. Alexander was family now, whether he liked it or not.

"Go," Vincent whispered into his radio.

The front doors of the warehouse didn't just open; they exploded, the sound of the breach loud like thunder.

"Drop the weapons! Now!" his men roared.

Lorenzo’s guards were sitting at a table, drinking coffee. They didn't have a chance. One reached for a holster, and a hail of bullets cut him down. The others scrambled for cover behind crates. The room filled with smoke and the sharp, metallic smell of gunpowder.

It was over in three minutes. Vincent’s team was faster, stronger, and much more prepared.

Vincent stepped over a body and walked into the center of the room. "Find him!"

He moved past a plastic curtain into a back corner. There, in the dim light, he saw a shape chained to the wall.

"Alexander?" Vincent’s voice was low.

Alexander’s head hung low. He was covered in dried blood, his shirt torn to rags, his skin a map of purple and black bruises.

Vincent knelt in the dirt beside him. He pulled out a pair of bolt cutters and broke the chain; it hit the floor.

Alexander blinked, his eyes hollow and red. He looked at Vincent, but he didn't seem to see him at first. "Isabella?" he wheezed; his voice sounded so dry and painful. "Is she... did he...?"

"She’s safe, Alex," Vincent said firmly, cutting the second chain. "She got out. She’s with Valeria. You’re safe now, too."

Alexander closed his eyes as tears carved clean lines through the dirt and blood on his face. He let out a long, shuddering breath. The weight of his grief and pain seemed to pour out of him all at once.

"Can you stand?" Vincent asked him.

Alexander tried. He pushed against the floor using his hands to support himself, but his legs were weak, unable to hold his weight; he collapsed instantly. Vincent caught him before he hit the concrete.

"Easy, kid. I’ve got you," Vincent draped Alexander’s arm over his shoulder and signaled to his men. "Get him to the car. Now!"

As they carried Alexander out, Vincent looked back at the warehouse, feeling anger burn his chest. "Burn it," he ordered. "Burn it to the ground. I want nothing left of this place."

One of his men tossed a flare onto a pile of oily rags. By the time they loaded Alexander into the SUV, the building was in flames.

The private hospital was quiet as Vincent sat in the hallway, his hands stained with Alexander's blood.

Valeria ran down the hall, her heels clicking fast on the tile. She stopped in front of her brother, her face white. "Is he... is he alive?"

"He’s in surgery," Vincent said. "He’s a mess, Val. Lorenzo did a number on him."

Valeria leaned against the wall, her eyes filling with tears. She stayed there for hours, not moving until the doctor came out.

"He’s stable," the doctor said. "He has broken ribs, a concussion, and severe dehydration. But he will recover."

They moved him to a private room. Valeria went in alone. She sat by his bed and took his hand. It was wrapped in bandages. When Alexander finally opened his eyes, he looked around the room, confused. Then he saw her.

"Valeria?" he whispered.

"I'm here, Alex."

"Isabella... is she really okay?"

"She’s safe," Valeria promised him. "She wanted to come, but she had to be treated. She sustained some injuries, but she will be fine.”

Alexander nodded weakly. He looked like he wanted to say more, but exhaustion was a heavy blanket. He drifted back to sleep, his breathing deep and steady for the first time in days.

Across the city, the sun was shining through the tall windows of the Damiano conference room. Lorenzo walked in, feeling confident, wearing a sharp gray suit.

He didn't check his phone. It had been buzzing in his pocket all morning, but he ignored it. He didn't want anything to ruin this moment. Marco had probably just run into a small problem at the warehouse. It didn't matter. Once the papers were signed, Alexander didn't matter anymore.

He walked to the table. Salvatore was already there. The old man looked terrible, his skin the color of ash, and his hands shook as he rested them on the table. Luca sat next to him, his face as still as a statue.

"Good morning," Lorenzo muttered, his voice full of feigned warmth. "I have the final revisions. I think you will be very pleased, Salvatore."

He opened his briefcase and slid the documents across the table. He spent twenty minutes giving his presentation. He pointed at the numbers as he watched Salvatore’s tired eyes move over the pages.

"It looks good, Lorenzo," Salvatore agreed, coughing, a wet, painful sound. "I just want this over with. I want my family to be secure."

He picked up a gold pen. Lorenzo’s heart began to race as the pen touched the paper. Salvatore signed his name with a jagged, shaky hand, pushing the papers toward Luca.

"Your turn, son," Salvatore said. "Let’s be done with this."

Luca looked at the papers, just staring at the ink. He knew Alexander was safe—he had received the text from Valeria ten minutes ago. He was just waiting for the signal, stalling a little bit, his fingers drumming on the table.

"Luca?" Lorenzo pressed further, his voice sharp. "Is there a problem? We’ve been over this."

"I was just thinking about the real plans you have for us," Luca said slowly, looking up at Lorenzo. "You know, the one you forgot to add."

Lorenzo’s face went stiff. "What are you talking about?"

Before Luca could answer, the double doors of the conference room burst open. Lorenzo jumped to his feet. Salvatore gasped, clutching his chest.

Vincent Harrington walked in, wearing a black tactical jacket, followed by four men with guns visible at their hips.

But it was the person behind him that made Lorenzo’s soul leave his body.

Isabella stepped into the room, wearing a simple white dress, her face covered in bruises, her lip swollen.

"Isabella?" Salvatore whispered, his voice full of shock. "What happened to your face?"

Isabella didn't look at her father. She looked at Lorenzo as she walked toward the table, her heels clicking on the floor like a drumbeat.

Lorenzo backed away until he hit the wall. All the color drained from his skin. He looked at the doors, then at the windows, but there was nowhere to run.

"The meeting is over, Lorenzo," Luca said, picking up the signed contract and ripping it in half.

Vincent walked straight up to Lorenzo. He was much taller; he leaned in until they were inches apart. "I heard you like to play with fire." His voice was a deadly whisper. "I hope you’re ready to burn."

Isabella stood at the end of the table. She didn't say a word. She just watched her husband tremble.
