Chapter 114 Day Of Trial 3
Chapter 114 Day Of Trial 3
Danika's Pov.
Everyone in the courtroom stood up in perfect unison as the elderly, grey-haired judge climbed the steps to his elevated bench, his black robes flowing behind him. He shuffled a stack of thick legal folders, adjusted his reading glasses, and looked down at the defense and prosecution tables.
"Please be seated," Judge Vance announced, his voice booming through the microphone. "We are here today for the state versus Jared Fox. The defendant faces an extensive, multi-count indictment detailing severe crimes against the person of Danika Laurent-Ashworth. Prosecution, please read the formal charges into the record so we may proceed with the arraignment and plea entry."
The lead prosecutor, a sharp-eyed woman named District Attorney Vance, stood up immediately, smoothing her jacket as she picked up a thick legal document. Her voice filled the room, cold, methodical, and entirely unyielding as she began detailing the horrific reality of what I had survived.
"Thank you, Your Honor," the prosecutor began, her eyes darting briefly to me with a reassuring nod before she looked back at the judge. "The state has compiled overwhelming, indisputable physical, digital, and forensic evidence against the defendant, Jared Fox. We are prepared to present charges in strict, chronological order to demonstrate a horrific pattern of systemic abuse, manipulation, and violence."
She cleared her throat, her voice taking on an even sharper edge. "Count one: Felony Assault and Battery. The state possesses extensive medical records, photographic evidence, and expert forensic testimony documenting that the defendant physically beat and injured the victim, Danika, on multiple distinct occasions. The injuries inflicted were severe, leaving the victim physically and mentally injured very badly, requiring emergency medical intervention and causing lasting psychological trauma."
I felt Lysander’s hand slip over mine beneath the wooden partition, his warm fingers locking with mine, providing a solid anchor as the dark details of my past were laid bare in front of strangers. I kept my chin up, staring directly at the back of Jared’s head.
"Count two: Criminal Blackmail and Extortion," the prosecutor continued, her words echoing off the high ceilings. "The defendant systematically used stolen personal data, explicit imagery, and financial threats to trap the victim, entirely destroying her autonomy and forcing her into compliance under the threat of public ruin. Count three: Coercion and Sexual Exploitation. The state has recovered encrypted digital communications proving the defendant used physical and psychological leverage to force the victim to engage in non-consensual sexual acts with outside corporate entities for his own financial gain."
A low, disgusted murmur rippled through the gallery behind us. Jared didn't even flinch. He sat completely still, his head bowed so low his chin was practically resting against his orange jumpsuit. He looked like a man who was already dead inside.
"Count four: Aggravated Identity Fraud and Criminal Forgery," the DA stated, her voice rising in intensity. "The defendant systematically lied to the public, financial institutions, and the victim herself, maintaining a fraudulent narrative that he was legally married to her when he wasn't, using a forged marriage certificate to gain total control over her personal assets and legal rights. And finally, Your Honor, Count five: Attempted Murder in the First Degree."
The entire courtroom went dead silent. The air felt completely sucked out of the room. "The state possesses undeniable forensic evidence and direct physical testimony proving that during his final confrontation with the victim, the defendant engaged in a lethal act of waterboarding, intentionally restricting her oxygen and torturing her until she almost died on the floor of his property. If not for the immediate actions of the victim to take evidence, this would have been lost and the victim would have also suffered fatal asphyxiation."
The prosecutor gathered her papers, flattening them against the podium. "Given the absolute mountain of digital logs, medical documentation, and physical evidence recovered from the scene, the state is fully prepared to seek the maximum allowable statutory penalty for every single count listed."
Judge Vance looked over the top of his glasses, his expression incredibly grim as he turned his gaze toward the defense table. He looked at Jared, then at the public defender sitting beside him.
"The court notes the severity and the disturbing nature of these charges," Judge Vance said, his tone entirely devoid of warmth. "Mr. Fox, you have heard the formal indictment read by the state. How do you plead to these counts?"
The public defender stood up slowly, leaning down to whisper something into Jared’s ear. Jared didn't even look up at his own counsel. He simply shook his head weakly, his lips moving in a quiet murmur before his lawyer addressed the bench.
"Your Honor, if I may," the defense attorney began, sounding completely exhausted. "My client understands the absolute weight of the evidence against him. He has waived his right to a full jury trial, and he wishes to address the court directly regarding his plea."
Judge Vance nodded once. "Mr. Fox, please stand."
Jared struggled to push himself up from the wooden chair, the heavy chains around his waist clinking loudly against the furniture. He stood there, looking incredibly small, frail, and entirely stripped of his former light. He didn't look at the gallery, and he didn't look at the cameras. He kept his eyes fixed entirely on the wooden podium in front of him. He had accepted his fate completely, because he knew he couldn't win no matter what. Against the infinite wealth, legal resources, and absolute determination of Lysander Laurent-Ashworth, a petty, abusive fraud like Jared never stood a chance.
"Your Honor," Jared spoke, his voice sounding raspy, thin, and completely broken through the microphone. "I... I have seen the evidence. I know what I did. I have no defense to offer this court."
He took a shaky breath, his cuffed hands trembling against his waist. "I plead guilty to all charges. Every single one of them."
A collective breath seemed to escape the entire courtroom. The admission was total. There was no theatrical defense, no malicious lies, and no painful cross-examination that would force me to relive my trauma on a witness stand. He had laid down his weapons and surrendered completely.
Judge Vance looked at Jared for a long, heavy moment before nodding slowly, his fingers typing the entry into his computer terminal. "The court accepts the defendant's plea of guilty on all counts. Given the explicit and horrific nature of the crimes, including attempted murder and severe bodily injury, this court will not delay sentencing. Mr. Fox, for your actions against Danika Laurent-Ashworth, you are hereby sentenced to a consecutive term of thirty years in a maximum-security state penitentiary, without the possibility of parole."
The gavel came down with a loud, definitive THUD.
"This court is adjourned."
