Chapter 40: The Fallout (Nate POV)
The shadow moved again outside the motel window, quick and dark, my heart jumping in my chest. I grabbed Liam’s arm, my breath fast and shallow, my eyes locked on the blinds. “They’re here,” I whispered, my voice shaky, pulling him toward the door. We’d barely caught our breath—his “I love you” still echoing in my mind, that kiss I had stopped just before it could fully happen—and now, this. Harper’s people, Graham’s—they’d found us, just like I’d feared.
“Move,” Liam said, his voice low but urgent, grabbing the flash drive from his pocket. His hand was tight on mine, pulling me forward as we bolted from the room. My legs wobbled beneath me, my side aching from the strain. We rushed out the door, down the stairs, the motel lot still quiet, no headlights yet in sight. But my chest stayed tight, my hands sweaty with anxiety. We ducked into an alley, my breath coming in sharp gasps, and Liam led us swiftly through the dark, navigating the familiar paths like he had done it a thousand times before.
“Warehouse,” he said, his voice rough with the strain of running, meaning our meet-up spot. I nodded, my head spinning, trying to focus as we moved quickly through the shadows, trying to stay out of sight. The weight of everything—the running, the fear, the uncertainty—settled into the pit of my stomach, but I pushed it down. I had no choice but to keep moving, keep trusting that we could make it through this.
We found shelter in an old, empty building, its walls thick with dust and the shadows of forgotten years. My back rested against a crate as I tried to catch my breath, waiting for whatever was coming next. My phone buzzed in my pocket—burner, low battery—and I pulled it out with shaking hands. The screen lit up with a news alert—Zoe’s name in bold letters: “ZenithTech Scandal Unveiled: CFO Launders Millions, Exec Frames Employee.” My heart stopped. I froze, eyes wide as the truth of it hit me. “Liam,” I said, my voice cracking as I shoved the phone at him. “She did it.”
He grabbed the phone, his breath catching in his throat as he scrolled through the article, his face softening as he absorbed the details. “Harper—server room, video,” he muttered under his breath, his voice low and full of awe. “Graham—offshore accounts, blackmail.” His eyes met mine, wide, stunned. “It’s all here—everything.”
I exhaled, long and slow, the tension in my chest loosening just a little. My hands were still shaking, my legs weak as I leaned back against the crate, the cold wood pressing into my spine. Zoe had done it—she’d gotten the video, the files, everything we had needed. Harper’s smirk, Graham’s threats—they were done, exposed. “We did it,” I said, my voice quiet, almost in disbelief. “They’re finished.”
Liam nodded, his face softening as a small, almost wistful smile tugged at the corner of his lips. “Yeah,” he said, his voice low but filled with relief. “You’re free, Nate—she can’t touch you now.”
I looked at him, really looked at him—his bruised face, his steady eyes, and my chest warmed with something I couldn’t quite name. Free—maybe. The article was everywhere now, spreading fast—news apps, social media feeds—Harper’s name in big, bold letters, Graham’s too. My hands unclenched, my breath slowing. Liam sat close beside me, his shoulder brushing mine, and for a moment, the quiet was enough. It felt real—after all the arrests, the running, the blood—it was finally over. Zoe had ended it.
But even as I felt relief settle in, a sharp twist of doubt crept into my stomach. My hands fidgeted with the edge of the crate, the unease rising again. “Too easy,” I muttered, my voice low, my eyes drifting to the floor. “Harper—she’s smart. Graham’s got people. This can’t be it.”
Liam frowned beside me, his hand brushing mine, the contact grounding me for a moment. “It’s out now,” he said, his voice soft but certain. “The video, the files—they’re public. They can’t hide from that.”
“Maybe,” I said, my voice shaky, my head spinning with the weight of everything that was happening. “But they’ve got lawyers, tricks—I’ve seen it before. What if they twist this, try to come after us harder?” My mind raced, spinning out of control. It was too much, too soon, and I wasn’t sure what would happen next.
He shook his head, his hand resting on mine now, warm and steady. “They won’t,” he said firmly, his voice sure, unwavering. “Zoe’s got proof—solid proof. We’re okay.”
I looked at him, his hand on mine, his eyes locked with mine. My breath hitched in my chest—not from fear, but from him. He had fought for me, cut me free, said he loved me. And somehow, that made everything feel a little more real. My fingers curled around his, slow, soft, the quiet stretching between us. “Thanks,” I said, my voice rough with emotion, my thumb brushing his skin in a soft caress. “For coming back.”
He smiled—small, real—and his hand squeezed mine, the warmth spreading through me. “Always,” he said, his voice low, and my heart jumped, warm and fast. We sat there, hands touching, the silence of the warehouse surrounding us. Dust floated in the dim light, the weight of everything pressing in. It wasn’t over—not really—but this, us, felt solid, like something I could hold onto.
But then, a bang shattered the moment—loud, sharp—the warehouse door slamming open. My heart stopped, my hand instantly pulling away from Liam’s, my legs tensing as the adrenaline surged through me. Footsteps—heavy, fast—echoed through the empty space. “Federal agents!” a voice barked, cutting through the air like a knife, and my stomach dropped. My hands went cold, my whole body freezing at the sound of those words.
I stood quickly, my legs shaking beneath me, with Liam right beside me, his face pale. Men in dark jackets stormed into the room—guns raised, badges flashing in the dim light. They moved fast, closing in. My breath caught in my throat, my chest tightening with panic. “What—” I started, my voice breaking, but they didn’t stop, didn’t explain.
“Hands up!” one of the agents shouted, his gun trained on me, his eyes hard and unforgiving. I raised my hands slowly, feeling the cold sweat on my skin, my head spinning. Feds, here, now? They had to have seen Zoe’s article—they had to have—but why were they here, and why now?
Liam stepped forward, his hands raised too, his voice sharp and demanding. “Wait—he’s clear, it’s out—”
“Shut it,” another agent snapped, grabbing my arms and pulling them down with a force that made my heart race. Cold metal clicked tightly around my wrists, the cuffs digging into my skin. My heart pounded as I looked at Liam, my eyes wide with panic. “What’s happening?” I said, my voice rising with fear.
The agent yanked me forward, his grip unyielding, his face blank and cold as he dragged me across the room. “Nathan Carter, you’re under arrest,” he barked, his voice loud, final, as Liam lunged forward, his hands reaching for me, his eyes wide with panic.
