Chapter 5
The smug laughter on those rich kids‘ and Kai’s faces froze like someone had hit the pause button.
They stood there gaping up at the massive machine that had no business being above this mountain.
The helicopter’s cargo door slammed open.
Several black figures descended through the bone cutting wind.
They moved like ghosts–in less than ten seconds, they’d subdued Kai’s entire stunned crew.
Ice cold gun barrels pressed against the back of each of their heads.
Then a man in a long black coat appeared in the aircraft doorway.
His glacial stare swept across the scene like a blade, finally locking onto Kai’s terrified face.
Word by word, like each one was being squeezed through clenched teeth:
“Who said her brother wouldn’t come save her?”
My tears broke free in that instant, scalding liquid sliding down my frozen cheeks.
Dante.
My brother.
The color drained completely from Kai’s face.
Like he’d seen a ghost in broad daylight, his pupils contracted sharply, lips trembling, unable to get out a single word.
His legs gave out and he collapsed into the snow with a thud, pathetic as a stray dog.
“D… Dante? Aren’t you… aren’t you overseas hiding from creditors?!”
“Hiding from creditors?”
My brother, Dante, repeated the phrase with contempt, his mouth curving into a cruel smile.
The rich kids around us were already shaking like leaves in the wind.
“It’s Dante Romano, it really is! How did he get back?”
“We’re screwed, we’re all screwed–the Romano family never went bankrupt!”
Listening to their terrified chatter, my mind cleared with icy clarity.
Dante Romano, my only family, the true power behind the Romano empire.
The one who was famous in business circles for iron fisted methods–ruthless was the label the outside world had pinned on him.
Six months ago, news of the Romano family “bankruptcy” spread throughout the city.
He’d fled overseas, and everyone thought the Romano tree had fallen, that this predator would never return.
That’s why Kai had dared to be so reckless, why all these people had dared to echo him and push me toward death’s door.
Dante’s gaze finally fell on me, on my body buried halfway in the snow.

Chapter 5
He didn’t touch me immediately, just stared hard at my purple face and bloodless lips,
his chest heaving violently, the storm in his eyes enough to destroy heaven and earth.
Then he spun around.
Before anyone could react, he raised leg and with all his strength, drove his foot hard into the chest of Kai, who was still collapsed on the ground
“WHAM!”
A dull crash–Kai flew like a broken sack.
He slammed into a distant snow pile, spitting up a huge mouthful of blood that instantly stained the white snow red.
He clutched his chest, curled up in agony, but still struggled to lift his head and make excuses.
“Bro… bro, let me explain, I…”
He actually had the nerve to call my brother “bro.”
“It was Gia–Gianna’s just too stubborn. I was only trying to teach her a lesson, make her learn…”
“Teach her?”
Dante cut him off, advancing step by step, his voice low as whispers from hell’s demons.
“My sister–I’ve treasured her like a princess for twenty years. I wouldn’t dare say a harsh word to her myself.”
He looked down at Kai like he was roadkill, enunciating each word.
“What gives trash like you the right to ‘teach‘ her anything?”
“Dare to put a finger on my sister, I’ll make your entire Carter family pay with their lives!”
He didn’t spare Kai another glance, turning to give orders to his security team,
his voice returning to calm but carrying undeniable authority.
“Dig the my sister out. Get her to a hospital immediately! Fastest possible speed!”
“Everyone here, including that Scarlett over there–no one leaves! Watch them!”
